GFWL Thread

That xlive thingy seems like a decent option to play offline. but I'd rather get official patch especially for things like RF:G (and give us MP again)

xliveless is not "an option", it kills all MP, so it is just a way to keep playing the solo part of some games. It will not replace proper steam integration, but for most dead games, it is a decent alternative.

It also shows how useless all these connectivity things are for solo playing.

I tried GTA4, and it works too. The program seems quite robust. It intercepts all call to MS and send a OK information to the game. The funny thing is that the fake connexion is instantaneous, meaning the games are so much friendly than they were with the "I spend minutes to connect" GFWL.

From my limited experience, we can say that all solo games will be still playable after the death of the service.

I think it will be even more sad when the PC players can't play Shadowrun with other players. It's bad enough that voice chat was broken when they released that one XBL update that updated the voice chat codec, but broke voice chat for the PC version of Shadowrun.

Even though that game has it's fair share of problems that will never get patched, at least it's still currently playable online.

Shadowrun sounds so cool, I wish I could have tried it out.

Even if Microsoft does start removing GFWL from some of their titles, I doubt Shadowrun will make the cut.

seeing how Microsoft just removed/unlisted Fable 3 from Amazon and Steam instead of patching it I really doubt they care to patch their older and less popular GFWL games.

Welcome to the digital future.

Its a shame that wether ms nor the other companies will do something about this.

I hope there will be a solution for this problem.

Goodbye GFWL cancer. I wish uplay could be next.

Hopefully Ubisoft kills off Uplay before The Division.

Some games are inevitably going to be left behind, we can only hope that the majority of games are saved.

It saddens me that all those Capcom games with great co-op/multiplayer will just... end.

Dead Rising 2/OTR, Lost Planet 1/2, RE5...

You will be missed dearly.

Yeah, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die should be fixed asap.
What is Bamco waiting for?. :(
It's the only digital game after SSFIV:AE I can't play because I refuse to install GFWL C'mon Bamco, tic-tac, tic-tac,...

Personally, i had zero problems with GFWL.
Kind of wish that there was another option along with getting rid of GFWL, like an option to take your GFWL games somehow over to the Windows 8 Games App/store

GFWL is more than a DRM, putting games on the windows store will not put back the multiplayer component (look at BlazeBlue).

Most games will be playable, but remaking the multiplayer aspect is some work

I played it again back in late 2011 with another gaffer, it was pretty fun. The online had a small but active community at that point, I might jump back in considering that it was one of my favorite games of the last generation.

I think Gears works offline but you can't save the game :/ Sucks, Epic usually have great post release support, I guess MS have them by the balls in this case, though.

I don't think there's any conceivable way that GFWL could have been "fixed," no.

Nah, it probably could have if they had continually worked on it for years and years like Valve did for Steam, instead of doing next to nothing.

I'm pretty sure it's all up to Epic if they want to put in the work or not.

but the IP now is in Microsoft hands I think Epic have no power anymore over it.

Now on Bulletstorm situation that might still be on Epic hands more than EA.

use xliveless, then you can save offline (in a very specific format).

I would imagine fixing up Gears of War now falls on Blacktusk.

I doubt it. Black Tusk is presumably too busy with Gears 4 -- which is all but assuredly going to be an X1 exclusive -- for MS to assign the task of patching out GFWL from a game it had nothing to do with.

Can't believe some of these games wont be patched to Steamworks. Big Bad AAA games like GTAIV+LC can't be left to rot. That's insane.

Not Happening
Grand Theft Auto IV - Rockstar recently amended the TOS agreement to warn players not to expect online functionality. Hope for the best expect the worst.
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City
Not exactly true. They did add text to the Steam store page that said online service/features can be terminated or amended with 30 days notice. This is standard legal text that should have been on there but was excluded for some reason. The game already states as much when you launch the game and on other digital storefronts and on retail copies.

The text also refers to any online features. One reason Rockstar could have updated the page to reflect the fact that GameSpy is shutting down on June 10th -- taking with it GTAIV's Social Club features.

Anyway, we can safely say at this point the G4WL shutdown has been delayed past July 1st. All G4WL games state that services can be terminated after 30 days of notice -- and not all publishers have given notice.

It's a sad state of affairs when we pretty much have to rely on ISOs and ROMs (and the emulators that play them) to preserve gaming history as the company's themselves have no interest in it.

Wait so does this mean every game on that list won't be playable even in single player at all?
You'll still be able to play them in singleplayer. The only problem you may run into down the line is the G4WL dependencies not working on newer versions of Windows - in that case xliveless may help.

For most games, create a offline account and log in in offline mode.

For a few, use xliveless to fake an online account.

A very few will be patched to steam works.

All games will still run after GFWL, the online portion will be dead, which is most of the time already the case.

Dear lord, the replies to that tweet are insane. I don't understand why people are begging Microsoft to take down servers so online play and leaderboards become unusable.

Because the tradeoff of having achievement points and leaderboards is that you have to deal with GFWL.

And having no online is a better alternative? I would love it if GFWL got replaced in every game which uses it, but that's not realistic. Once GFWL goes down, many games will lose online functionality for good. I don't understand why people want this to happen.

GWFL lives! Aw yiss

All achievements in Arkham Asylum done. Now Arkham City. Might get Flatout too now that I can play it with the Xbone controller.
It'd be nice for the random old games that will never get ported if nothing else.

Yeah, I don't get it.
I'm not exactly a fan of Gamespy either, but now the majority of the Battlefield franchise is completely unplayable. How is that a good thing? It probably costs MS next to nothing to just keep the servers up for the dozen or so games that still use it, and it saves these games from becoming completely worthless and unplayable.

It is next to impossible that any Dev would put GFWL into their games in 2014.

As it stands today, of course. But we need to bury it completely, and burn it's heart, so that Microsoft doesn't do a turnaround get any ideas of pushing the service again. As unlikely as it seems, there is always a risk that they trick some dumb publisher (hello Capcom) to support it again.

Lost Planet 3 is a good example. A late 2013 release, its MP uses GameSpy despite the game otherwise using Steamworks and GameSpy Tech ceasing licensing at the beginning of the year (2013). Somebody should have said "Hey guys, GameSpy is no longer being licensed out... maybe we should switch it out." But instead Capcom has spent the past six weeks doing what it should have done with the seven months it had between GameSpy Tech's announcement and the game's release.

I have a few games on GFWL that I got for free or extremely cheap (Flight Simulator, Age of Empires 3, etc.). Hopefully I can back those up somehow.

Considering Microsoft pulled down their GFWL store, I'll be surprised if GFWL is even available for developers to use in their games. And Capcom hasn't looked back towards GFWL since they started using steamworks.

Yeah you can't even sell DLC anymore to people. I hope they keep it online for the games that still use it and are unlikely to get patches.

Judging by those tweets, I'm risking sounding so 'uncool' here but fuck, what a load of nonsense. I've had no trouble with GFWL all the years I've had to deal with it. Sure, it's a bit intrusive at times, but I loved getting achievements on PC. The fact some people would rather entire aspects of games were SHUT DOWN rather than keep GFWL just sounds ridiculous, like angry children having tantrums after bedtime, figuratively cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

Have we had any official word whether GFWL live is definitely going next month, and what the HELL will happen to Viva Pinata!!!!!!!?? :(

There goes any hope of seeing updated versions of Dark Souls and Resident Evil 5 anytime soon, alongside Halo on Steam and other things.

So they can patch it to Steamworks and have Halo 2 live forever instead of living only on borrowed time.

GfWL is ending, we already know this thanks to the fact they leaked that ending date (that was pushed back) with games moving to Steamworks (some of them) and the fact that GfWL's marketplace is pretty much gone at this point.

At this point hanging onto it is just stupid. 343 despite being MS should get the lead out and port Halo 2 to Steamworks if they aren't bothering with Halo 3 at this point.

Because getting rid of it once and for all will eventually force publishers/developers to action, while keeping it around will encourage inertia, which will be even worse on the long term.

There, now you should "understand why".

Just tried to install GFWL and the Live Sign-In Assistant installer just hung there and got no further.

Screw it, I'll just wait for Dark Souls to be patched eventually.

You're too hopeful if you think the service going down will convince every publisher to replace GFWL. Gamespy is a good example that a ton of stuff doesn't get updated even when it stops working.

It's especially dooming for games which wasn't a success. I personally really enjoyed playing Lost Planet 2 coop, but I don't think there's any chance in heck Capcom will update that game as it was a giant flop.
