Circana June 2024: #1 Elden Ring #3 Kingdom Hearts #4 SMT V #8 Luigi's Mansion 2; PS5 #1 Units + Rev, Switch #2 Units Xbox #2 Rev

I'm a bit surprised myself. It's also a bit weird seeing PlayStation carrying Xbox games (I don't include Call of Duty as a Xbox game).

'Carrying'?
That title's probably at around 15 million units sold before launching on PS5. Estimated 10 million on Steam alone, as a late port.

I always knew it was going to sell well on PlayStation.

We haven't seen different trends for Grounded, HiFi Rush and Pentiment ports.

I mean in the charts, carrying it there.
Must've done really well, when did it release? Wasn't June was it? :pie_thinking:

Its not too surprising, Playstation have a far player base and Xbox get like the mediocre version of this game, with nothing to dl beside be on the ship?

As a GAAS the game evolved, get some content and launch on PS5 will much more package than when launch on Xbox.

Yeah but it's doing well, it released at the end of April. Good hold.

Sea of Thieves doing very well, silencing the naysaysers indeed, eh Killjoy-NL Killjoy-NL ?
I haven't been silent on it.

I've also said it will probably sell decently at launch and slowly fall off.

But it does seem to be a bit more popular then I expected, which might make sense because lots of Xbox gamers jumped ship to Playstation since last-gen.

Nah you'd be surprised how ignorant the average console player is. The ones that are just playing fortnite and cod. Or parents getting it for their kids.
Channeling Yusuf Mehdi from back at Xbox one launch:

"While the Internet is decidedly up in arms about the way the Xbox One handles game ownership and online check-ins, Mehdi said it was "hard to say" what the larger reaction from the less attentive mainstream consumers would be. "I think it's fair to say there's a segment of consumers at this show in particular who really pay attention, who are very passionate about all aspects of gaming, and that we listen to closely. In a broader set of community, people don't pay attention to a lot of the details. We've seen it in the research, we've seen it in a lot of the data points."

Then again, it already dropped from 3rd place to 6th for PS software sales in the second full month after release and isn't in the top 10 of MAU.

Have you taken a look at the games in the top 10 MAU? Even Elden Ring just barely scraped it into the list, as the best selling game of the month

Yes, but it also lost it's momentum.

Not even sure why you're cheering and tagging me anyway, because ever since Xbox did the Business Update back in january, the 'console-wars' are officially over.
So Sea of Thieves is just one of many 3rd party games on Playstation.

Tagged you because you once insinuated nobody asked for 'small games' like Sea of Thieves on PS and MS should bring 'bigger games'.

We had this conversation after the 4 games were revealed

I never said nobody asked for it.
What I said is that it would just be a minority at best, most of which are probably former Xbox-fans double-dipping, because most people dont care about Xbox and the Xbox library .

And that would go for the bigger games as well, although obviously you can now add ABK games as well. But we both know what games we were talking about.

Listening to the Podcast Unlocked episode while mowing the grass today. The amount of doom and gloom about Xbox hardware is at an all time high from the green team faithful. Destin read Nadella's response to the stockholder's question where he highlighted PC as the focus. Going back to late last year, it has become increasingly obvious that Microsoft is telling everyone exactly what they are doing. They are on their way to full third party publisher with emphasis on PC gaming. Everyone seems pretty much convinced Xbox Series is Microsoft's last console. Xbox will become a PC gaming brand much like Alienware or ROG. Think that is why Microsoft nerfed Game Pass for console while keeping the day one incentives for PC Game Pass. Writing is on the wall for everyone to see. Not saying anything that hasn't already been said by others here and elsewhere, but it's just strange to hear this stuff from these guys.

The dying efforts of influencers to grift the last few bucks off gullible Xbox fans. It's going to be hard to fanboy for a third party publisher. There is a reason there is no successful Square Enix or Capcom podcasts that grifters live off of.

On the topic of Xbox ports to ps5, do we have any idea/rumours on what games are coming next?
Since Sea of Thieves PS5 was a healthy shot in the arm for the game, Halo infinite use one of those as well

So far the PS5 is at 69% (nice!) and the Xbox Series console is at 31% of all HD consoles sold in America. Last year for all of 2023, PlayStation was at 64% and XBS was at 36%.

What makes that scary for MS?

Because there's a reality that most of the "next-gen only" games are only starting to come out in 2024 and 2025. Unreal Engine 5 games weren't really ready until this year. Once the heavy hitters for this generation come out, it'll become more and more obvious how the Series S will hold them back.

Gamers that have those systems will start to hear and understand that their friends that are playing games like GTA 5 and Black Myth WuKong on the PS5 Pro are having a 300% better experience than them. And when they see the difference in person and feel the difference on the sticks, they will get annoyed or pissed at Microsoft and the Xbox brand.

Trust me......this will 100% happen!

But surely if people are buying the S over the X, they don't really care about graphics anyway right?

You think there are a flood of people who bought RTX4060 GPUs that are angry with Nvidia because gamers with 4090s get better visuals and more solid performance ?

99% of people know that when they buy a budget console, it's not comparable in power to flagships.

I honestly don't think the majority of the people truly understand the difference between the S and the X. Some people even thought it was the same difference between the PS5 DE and PS5. It's crazy!

People somehow manage to figure out the difference between the iPhone 15 and the 15 Pro.
You're assuming a problem that doesn't exist.

But do they care about games not coming to their console at all???

that doomsday scenario is still yet to materialize and folks here have been beating that drum since 2020.

Ah well. Maybe 2025 will be the year ? 😀

It's scary that 46% of all new Xbox Series owners this year bought the Series S. This will NOT be good for MS in 2025.
Yup.

They already know developers hate the S.

It wasn't too far back that series s and series x was around 50:50.

Then series X took the lead. Now s has cut the lead again.

The series s disaster is gonna haunt them for the entire gen

If they don't undertake the difference then I really don't think they'll care about what games look like on PS5 Pro. They'll just buy the games for the console they own.
Won't the problem be devs getting pissed at Series S holding their games back, potentially skipping Xbox.
Well the would still be the case regardless of whether Series S was 16% or 56%
But do they care about games not coming to their console at all???
Potentially, buy why would people buying a Series S prevent games coming to Xbox?

Switch 2 and GTA VI should give the industry a real shot in the arm in 2025.
I would say for Japan Monster Hunter Wilds make much more difference than GTAVI.

For me personally MH Wilds is way more exciting than GTAVI.

I was talking about the US, but yes Wilds is more important in Japan (especially as GTA VI isn't on PC).

I'm very curious about how Wilds does on PS5 in Japan, given that World strongly overperformed on PS4.

The Industry needs Switch 2 ASAP. Especially Japanese 3rd parties like SE.
People keep saying this, but the main culprit for sales not being spectacular is that the PS5 is still $500 after almost 4 years and that it hasn't received too many current games only.

A switch successor will possibly cost $400-450 and the games will be $70.

And SE problems are mostly due to their games and not exclusivity.

I don't see PS5 reaching a low price anytime soon, whereas Switch 2 opens a new market for games that third parties can't bring to Switch.

A Switch successor will get the Industry hyped and invigorated to play "new, currentish" games on a dedicated Hybrid that's not just a portable PC.

SE is having a problem with trying to support their major titles with just one platform. One platform that yes, costs $500. However I could see many of their games selling extremely well on a Switch 2, especially if not priced $70.

PS5 alone simply cannot hold up the industry when it comes to game sales, especially Japanese games. Switch 2 could give more potential buyers to these Publisher that need another viable userbase to sell to.

It's insane that the PS5 isn't just straight up $399 right now. INSANE!!!

Interesting insights, Mat Piscatella! It's striking to see the big drop in hardware spending, but also impressive how Elden Ring and Pokémon GO are performing. The trends in mobile and accessory spending are notable too. Thanks for the detailed breakdown!
