Peter Molyneux rules and I’m tired of pretending he doesn’t

Dungeon Keeper: banger
Syndicate: banger
Black and White 1&2: bangers
Fable 1&2: bangers

Those 7 games right there in a vacuum put him in an elite class of game designers. Is his track record flawless? No. But that's because he was so willing to get weird and make experimental projects. Black and White is nothing like Dungeon Keeper is nothing like Fable.

Did he exaggerate and overpromise? Yes. Did he put out some borderline scam games after his career flamed out? Yes. But he was a real ideas guy.

All hype and very little substance, it's the Peter Molyneux way. Black & White was my first ride on that roller coaster and I got off after Fable which made modern Bethesda games look deep.

Black and white 1 was what made me fall in love with PC gaming as a kid. That and then Morrowind the year after was such a good fucking time.

My first lesson in a dev being all talk, no show and then churning out a mid product.

If you look up the term "mid" in the dictionary there are pics of Fable 1 and 2. True story.

No, he ruled, and then he started with the dumb shit. He's basically no different than Richard Garriott or Warren Spector or any number of old school developers who fell off.

He was good back in the day but the recent years washed out. Still a legendary developer with his reputation marred by obvious scams - Milo and Curiosity.

I mean yeah he made some good games decades ago.
He's completely irrelevant now though, which the context in which we mostly talk about him.

His bad reputation is built on over-promising and underdelivering as he aged, to the point where he straight up lied to people.

If he had been able to have one modern game where he turned things around he'd be an older Sean Murray right now with No Man's Sky.

Dude was involved in some great games in the past, until EA ruined Bullfrog like oh so many other studios. Lionhead had a few good titles too...wish Fable 2 would get remastered to PC.

Fable 2 was his goose song. Like a swan song but worse. A game that had some really terrible ideas dragging it down. After that every game got exponentially worse than the last.

He has a great imagination & that helped with games like Fable

Shout it from the rooftops brother. He's responsible for some incredible games. I'm looking forward to his new one.

He did some good shit in his day:

Syndicate
Populous II
Dungeon Keeper
Fable I & II
Black & White 1&2

That being said, I think Populous 3 and Dungeon Keeper 2 are better games in their respective franchises. And those happened without him.

Molyneux is good at coming up with great ideas and vertical slices more talented people should lead and direct into fruition. At best he should be a producer that helps people get the ideas the directors want to happen to happen

He's alright. He promises way too much though. I don't trust him anymore. But he is quite good and very important to gaming as a whole.

If only he had not done the Project Natal thing. He really jumped the shark there. It nearly ruined his reputation imo..

I think most pc people would have favorable things to say about him. It just came to a point where everything was about him and he didn't deliver the goods when the time came.

For sure. He worked on incredible games and had his own vision of what would work and be interesting to play. He is part of gaming history.

You don't need to have a 100% track record to be remembered and recognized as highly influential.

This is like people who are going to shit on Yuji Naka while the guy is an absolute legend. At some point he stopped begin relevant, sure, but before that point ? Guy was absolutely unbelievable.

If you stop the count at 2004, 2008 with Fable II, sure.

Warren Spector I would say too if you stop the count at 2000

Chris Roberts with all the wing commanders up to Freelancer

Tom Hall, John Carmack, John Romero

These guys with Peter Molyneux basically defined 90's PC gaming. Not so much success afterwards. I guess they had their time, an amazing time to be sure.

When you think about Orson Welles do you think about this?

When you think about Robert Deniro and Al Pacino do you think of shit like this?

I'm just saying put some respect on my boy's name. He had a hell of a run.
