Avowed has the best first person combat in any RPG ever

The combat is exceptional and is one of the aspects that keeps pulling me back. I don't have that much time to spend in games these days as an old fart with wife, house and children, but I've put 27 hours in since it was released which is unheard of.

I'm in the fourth area now and loving every minute. Think I'll restart once I'm done and try another character class to see how it compares.

Games like Darktide or Vermintide leave it in the dust but those aren't strictly RPG. That leaves the gold standard "Dark Messiah" which is still better than Avowed in that regard.
Avowed is very good but not charttopping in that regard.

It was certainly decent, but I’m not a big RPG player so can’t say if it’s the best or not.

I just ended up spamming meteor and ice showers whilst hacking away with my flaming sword. Definitely got a bit old by the end of the game!

Heh?

I believe Topher Topher was referring to the Dark Messiah when he said that.

He better have been. If not I'm sending him to the nearest convalescent home without any videogames.

Yeah....Dark Messiah. I finished Avowed so I know all about that part. Not sure what the gif was about really.

Saying you like a game vs attempting to downplay the achievements of Dark Messiah's combat are two different things entirely.

I think adamsapple adamsapple and I collect VHS tapes I collect VHS tapes are attempting to take what you previously said as an endorsement for Avowed over Dark Messiah.

Unless they think the footage of the NPC's slipping over the ice being cast is from avowed.

no, I was pointing out Topher Topher and I have previously talked bout how great and satisfying the combat is at length

I probably like it more than him, but he loves it as well

I just wanted to let you know so you can begin the process of shipping him off to the convalescent home

It's a great game, imo.

Ok now you're skating on thin ice.

It's ok, I'm starting to understand his sneaky ways now. Putting on a show for me so I don't send him packing.

Good. Y'all should give it a try if given the chance.

It's pretty good. Surprisingly good combat mechanics, something I didn't expect going in.
I tried and couldn’t take the dead world and awful writing. Also, didn’t like the skill trees and I thought itemization was 💩.

Bailed out after 5 hours or so and went back to KCD2.

Edit: I would love to see what War Horse could do with KCD2 as a base and add magic/fantasy elements.

A Fucking Idiot
It's easy to tell who hasn't played it and is just spouting stupid shit from their mouth. The game is fantastic and very rewarding.

For me Dying Light 1 & Avowed are top of the class for first person combat.

Dont know of it is the best but it is one of the best, for sure. I usually dislike it when your conpanions give you hints, but it is really cool when they warn you if somebody attacks you outside your field of vision. I had a mage build and it was never boring because there were so many options to dispatch enemies.

Yep, is great.
It has alot of options and flexibility and very tight controls.
Playing at Path of Damnation makes you squeeze a good chunk of its depth.

I still put Dying Light 1 on top, followed by Cyberpunk 2.0, but is great.

My problem is that the name of the game sounds really weak. Also, the lore looks kind of weird with all the tree people. I don’t like bright, well-lit, ‘happy’ rpgs either (most larian games). Yeah, so its not just about combat. A lot of things come into play.

Dark Messiah, which actually I'm replaying it after almost a decade for a few days now, so its fresh, and it has not aged as well as I remembered it. Is a cool physic demo combat wise and I suggest anyone playing it, but its completely unbalanced combat wise. Let's not even go into the dialogues and story cause that's... yea..

Kicking simulator nearby cliffs. Kicking messiah.

If that novelty doesn't wear off for you then you'll have a blast but otherwise, kick off cliffs, kick into fire, kick into spikes, kick kick. Its almost a meme.

Very repetitive. They setup enemies with neon signs almost for kick him off a cliff! Kick him into spikes! Which kind of makes any depth of the build evaporate, outside of a few good setup videos on youtube like we also saw for Dishonored, after how many reloads to make it look cool, like flipping a bottle and make it land or some any impossible skill video. Any first time players will not play like that. If you want to practice 300 hours to look cool go for it, the potential is there.

Playing mage quickly becomes a chore later on as they are more effort than worth to use. Stealth is shit as often there's nowhere to hide. When you can hide then its broken. Bow sucks, too long to switch. Movement is kinda clunky, lagging almost, too much weight. There's mods to improve that but the OG is... yeah. A thing of its time.

I much prefer the balance of combat in Dishonored, tight as fuck, but action. Dark messiah feels like Arkhane's demo concept comparatively. Somehow also not as good as Arx Fatalis imo. Kick messiah is a much more shallower experience and hugely inconsistent compared to Arx. Had a lot more fun with Avowed to be honest.

Compared to what, Elder Scrolls pool noodle fights?

Is it really better than KCD?

I mean slightly less shit than other shit isn't something to be screaming from the rooftops.

Compare it to something like a Mordhau or chivalry 2 where melee combat has depth and weight, even KCD and KCD2 have much more visceral combat although i do think they are less entertaining than the prior.

and as many are saying already the bar is Dark Messiah and it doesn't really match that anyway

What is this, operation save a studio part 2?

What's gullible is you thinking avowed has good combat in comparison to this game that was made 20 years ago and ensured we had dynamic encounters due to the fact that the environments are not static.
He's right though, Avowed is being downplayed in that comparison video, I don't expect you to admit of all people but it's a fact.

Nah...

Not strictly an RPG but certainly games with an RPG element: Destiny remains head and shoulders above absolutely everything else since, when it comes to first person combat. I've long left D2 behind and I'll never touch it again, but Bungie's way with FPS controls and motion is downright balletic.

Special mention to Dead Island 1's alt analogue control scheme, which had the best first person melee combat in any game ever. So obviously they stupidly failed to bring it forward into the later Dying Light titles.

The game is so underrated, it will definitely have better reception when releases on Playstation. Some people's mind will change quickly.

Not only the combat is one of the best and satisfying in years so is the exploration. And how about the graphics? The game insanely beautiful.

Obsidian keeps winning and I hope they keep creating games in this universe.
After Avowed, Pentiment, one of the best games I played this generation, and Grounded, one of the most fun, I have high expectations for Outer Worlds 2.
