Update: Nintendo confirms no DL required for physical Switch 2 Edition Games (the OG Switch game and the upgrade pack are on the same cart)

About the "game cart with no game that triggers a download", I'm pretty sure that there are Switch 1 games that are just like that already.
My Bioshock Collection cartridge only has Bioshock 1, with BS2 an B:Infinite being downloaded when I first insert the cart.

Yeah exactly, there's just an official name for it now (game key cards) therefore it's an epidemic and Nintendo is out to kill physical gaming.

Its not Switch 2 games, its Switch 1 games. I thought it was obvious that this was gonna be Switch 1 games with digital upgrades. Metroid Prime 4 is just a Switch 1 game with a very impressive upgrade.

Forgot about these versions, buy BOTW and an expansion sub and it will be far cheaper than buying the Switch 2 edition.
Yeah, even better, you can get that for around $35-40 depending if you want used, new, etc….

And heck, if you sub to Nintendo Online with Expansion pack don't need to buy the DLC. The expansion pack isn't cheap though and you could easily emulate everything with it in a toaster.

I'm sorry but, whats the point of buying a Switch 2 edition of a game instead of buying a the Swich 1 physical game and then buying the upgrade on Swicth 2 separately? As far as I see it, you get some advantages:
  • You get a game that works on Switch 1 and 2
  • You get cover art without the hideous extra information plastered all around it
  • You get the upgraded version for NS2
  • Cost about the same? (do we know hoe much upgrades to NS2 versions cost?)

It should have never gotten to this point, they know about the upcoming kick back off the price (that's why I think we got the Mario Kart bundle on launch) so their PR team should have been on maximum attack squashing any untrue negative news.

Preservationists will appreciate having all the data on a cart. This also has advantages for lending and resale as buying that digitally means it is stuck on your account.

Main benefit I would see with these 1st party games is that the switch 2 cards have the faster access speeds vs the switch1 cards with a patch/upgrade on top, as well as holding their resale value like Nintendo games tend to do anyway.

These "updates" should be fucking free for owners of the Switch 1 versions. You buy a 460€ console only to have its ability to have better performance on old games paywalled? Come the fuck on, man...

Hmm, thats a good point, it will be dissapointing if swich carts are much slower than the upgraded pyshica NS2 version.

NS games will perform better in NS2 just by virtue of running on it. The editions include extra content and/or finetuning that do take advantage of NS2 features like HDR, 4K or 120fps depending on each game iirc.

isn't stuff like higher resolution and higher framerate for the Zelda games part of the "update package"?

Yes, SonyToo®, they charged for PS5 upgrades first. At least Nintendo is adding content in as well.
Do you really want to go that route? Because yes Sony charged for "some" updates but also added plenty of things for Free. Astro play room (free) Welcome park for Vita (Free), God of War Ragnarok DLC (Free) ...etc

Meanwhile at Ninty you get a half assed demo for $10, raise the price of famous Nintendo low cost games to $80, charging you for party chat!!! giving you a 480p camera for $40 lol

Its not the same man 😭

Yep.

Zelda will run better, but it wont get more resolution or fps because that walled behind the update AFAIK.

So these games don't work on the Switch 1?

I think something has been lost into translation from Japanese to English. Here what I think is the case:

  • If you own the Switch 1 version, you need an upgrade pack.
  • If you own the Switch 2 version, then there is no upgrade pack on the cart. It is just the Switch 2 version of the game with new content, improved textures, view distance etc.

Pretty much every publisher offers these things for free. Of course they don't have to, but it's pretty shitty of Nintendo to not do it.
Imagine if they charged one price for 30fps a bit more for 60fps and then a bit more again for 120fps and you'll see that charging for "finetuning" as you suggest is an absolute crock of shit.

And they still sell more games than Sony. Lolz

Christ Nintendo have done a shit job of explaining this.

The response we're all taking as gospel now, which was from some rando Nintendo of Australia rep (so I still don't trust it), said:
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will include the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack all on the same game card.
which is still fucking poorly worded.

This makes it sound like the original Switch 1 executable is on the fucking cart which could give people the impression it'd be playable on Switch 1 too.

Just say "it contains the upgraded Switch 2 version only" for fucks sake.

Switch 2 has broken you. I'm looking forward to your posts around how successful it is and outselling sonys consoles.

I think there's lots of Switch 2 updates coming for free too?

I saw a list the other day with about 10-15 known games on it like Bowser's Fury and Scarlett/Violett.

You really including Vita Welcome Park? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I believe it when I see it. There is way too much bullshit and different Nintendo reps have said different things. We have not put anything to rest. This Nintendo spokesman says this and another one says that.

It will vary by game. As a general rule, games that are just patched to run better get upgrades for free, while those with new content/controls are paid.

Base Switch game + graphical updates + new Switch 2 content is on the cartridge

Original Switch 1 DLC (such as the BOTW Expansion Pass) is not

It's really fucking weird
This is the real bullshit. They're putting some challenge dungeon dlc that's been out for 6 years as dlc when they could have released a definitive edition and then at least had a bit of a reason to over charge. Blech.
