Assassin’s Creed Shadows Officially a Flop in Japan, Lowest First-Week Sales in Series History & Outsold by Other Samurai Games "Ghost, Nioh & Ronin"

Are some of the animes claiming they are historically accurate?

I do hope you are not comparing 'historically accurate' with 'satire' because would be as stupid as the anime satires. If you do hate animes, no problem at all.
Point to where ubisoft states the game is supposed to be historically accurate. Hell, point to any assassin's creed game and show the dev claiming it to be historically accurate.

They specifically go out of their way to tell you its inspired by historical events.

I would search and quote myself when Yasuke was introduced that Assassin Creed would sell in Japan the 40k it has historically sold there but I'm way too lazy to dive into the awesomeness of my contributions so I will just say

There is no "historical events" were Yasuke stays on Japan after Nobunaga death.

But tbf Ubisoft did claim "historical accurate" and after that the damage control started with the apologies letters to the japanese ppl

Just accept not every1 gonna consume every AC game like u do, bro, u enjoy them and thats great, many of us tho find them if not bad then quite avg(again i completed ac4 and ac5 here, i loved old entries in the series, so im not hater who never buys/plays and only bitches about those games).

There is so many exceptional games launching every year, its ok to not play mediocre ones(yes, its subjective judgement- players arent professional journos/reviewes, its ok to be subjective for us, since its our time and money spent), no need to shame players in japan or around the world for not buying/playing mediocre game they didnt like, simple as that, if u wanna blame some1, blame ubi for not cattering to our needs instead :)

Here in contrast 2 smaller franchises, with smart devs/ppl at the head, both sold 6m each, not players, actual 6m copies sold, in launch period.
No1 questions devs/pubs logic or success of those games, coz its clear to every1(even ppl who dont like/buy/play them) that those games are massive success.

You can see all the comments of that petition here.

98% of the comments are in English and written by angry non Japanese. I guess a good number of the comments in Japanese were from westerners too.

Its weird that I get a very different comment distribution when I click on the petition and afterwards on comments. I looked through at least 1000 comments, I see more japanese than non-japanese comments? It certainly doesnt look like "98% of the comments are in English". For example one row of comments looks like this:

The Japanese people deserve better than western ideology deciding to re-write their history for the sake of ESG scores.

this is the most disgusting atrocity in gaming history.

Blackrock & Vangaurd are the reason all companies are pushing this Woke Virus. Not just in entertainment.

Here you go.

We’re showing real historical figures, such as Oda Nobunaga and a lot of events that happened during that time, so you’re not only playing in feudal Japan, but learning about this fantastic time period.

“Our team extensively collaborated with external consultants, historians, researchers, and internal teams at Ubisoft Japan to inform our creative choices.”

At the heart of the minor controversy around Assassin’s Creed Shadows are its playable characters: Yasuke, a Black samurai, and Naoe, a Japanese shinobi. Yasuke’s position as samurai has been a source of some debate, and given an apparent lack of historical documentation on the man, a servant of Oda Nobunaga, some have taken issue with Ubisoft’s game naming him a samurai.

However, a recent, widely shared post from Japanese historian Yu Hirayama argues that Yasuke was indeed granted samurai status by Nobunaga. Hirayama cites Yasuke’s stipend, housing, and sword afforded him by Nobunaga, but acknowledges that Nobunaga’s enemies did not view Yasuke as a samurai.

Yes, there are so many exceptional games out there my man. Why talk about the ones you don't like? Plenty of games I don't like. Outside of the occassional mention that it isn't for me, I don't talk about them. Simple as that.

Not surprising at all, it felt like Ubisoft had every week something new to piss Japan off with when it came to AC Shadows.
In the end, I doubt Ubisoft really cares how Japan reacts to the game. The game seems to be fairly popular in the west and that's all they care about.
Good on Japan for voting with their wallets though.

This was their answer after the controversy spark over Ubisoft. And that answer was only to the japanese folks my friend.

I guess people either have short memory or try to avoid the conversation surround this matter. I really don't understand the bad faith on ignoring previous discussions.

Did Ubisoft claim historical accuracy?
Ubisoft had always presented the mission of Assassins Creed to be a perfect blend of accurate and recognizable history in order to create a recognizable snapshot of the time.

If i didnt care about the series i wouldnt say a thing, but same thing like with DA:V i really hoped AC:S will be good, especially after the delay i deluded myself ubi heads gonna at least make 3rd protag and give us japanese male samurai, so ofc its big dissapointment to me personally and i politely voice my opinions.

We are in a topic about AC:S being crazy flop in japan- which doesnt need ubi defenders- im just politely explaining why game failed and simple way(3rd protag, japanese male) for it to not be so disgraceful.
Again- to all my gaf-bros who wanna defend game/ubi, blame the pub/devteam instead for not cattering to japanese audience by giving them(and other ppl in the world) option, and i repeat, just an option, to play as most historically apropriate japanese male samurai.

We all have seen so many ppl(usually journos/activists which currently is same thing, since they like or rather- are paid for- pushing woke agenda) complain what this and that game doesnt have representation/minorities/women yet here, in most obvious way- AC:S fails to represent japanese male samurai for games audience, wasnt DEI about fair representation/inclusion etc? Where is japanese male protag then?

you must have the shortest memory because literally every ac game starts saying it's fiction.

And somehow they address this time? Unless you skip that part.

And? What part did this invalidate the japanese answer?

I already edit my post. Please, look around.

they "address" it "this time" because of people like you who've gotten the insane idea in their heads that AC games are suddenly supposed to be documentaries; no fake, leonardo da vinci wasn't a super spy master providing highly advanced gadgets to a secret order of assassins who will wind up fist fighting the pope.

People like me?

Please, elaborate. Someone that don't agree with you? We played Genshin Impact together BTW.

I didn't say it invalidated a thing, now did I? You quoted from the tweet. I quoted from the same exact one. So what's your problem?

Just do yourself a favor and look for the timegap between that answer and when the controversy started.

They only did that answer after A LONG LONG TIME. Context matter.

No need. I know quite well that they fucked up the PR around this game. But at least they eventually acknowledged that it wasn't historically accurate. That doesn't make up for all the fuck ups, but not sure it is worth belaboring the point either.

No, because you're not disagreeing with me, you're disagreeing with what the AC franchise has always been about, being works of fiction inspired by history, by convincing yourself of something that isn't true, them being non-fiction.

Case in point. I just don't agree. They waiting WAAYYYYY long to give a proper answer. Silent is sometimes an answer.

But I not gonna debate with you in that matter. I do accept the PR nightmare argument, but don't fall into this so easily. They choise to answer much much long, not to mention the countless of article defending their decision.

I don't like Ubisoft in case you never notice, so every AC after Black Flag sucks. I'll not hide that sentiment, but I just find funny some users bashing since ages Ubisoft until this game was announce and somehow everything change.

Anw, Tecent got a part of the company, so AC wasn't able to save Ubisoft. And yes, I disagree with the premisse of Ubisoft 'never cared about 'historically accurate'. Believe in what you want. I don't.

it's an immutable fact that every single game in the franchise is described as being fiction inspired by history, so disagree all you want, all that achieves is make you come across as an idiot going:

Would have been better just to say from the beginning that this is a work of fiction based on real people from Japanese history. I think we can agree on that.

So ur rebutal to my request about japanese male samurai is to laugh? Is it coz u know ubi is so woke they are beyond redemption? Or are u laughing coz AC:S bombed in japan.
How more based can a person be to ask devs for option to play most probable person in feudal japan- japanese male samurai?
Remember official reveal trailer?

10,7m views- so we know franchise is well known and liked
306k likes/ but 614k dislikes, its 1:2 ratio, aka 66% of potential players didnt like japanese female/black male protag combo, ppl have spoken, laugh at them too while u are at it, ubi laughing just as hard too, i bet :)

I think that goes without saying.

Previous games have also used real people from period appropriate era and used them in fictional scenarios.

Da Vinci, Ben Franklin, George Washintgon, Cleopatra, Ceaser etc etc.

Because AC shadows is suddenly different from every other game in the franchise that are works of fiction inspired by history.
Austin Powers Doctor Evil GIF

I'm sorry you expected ac shadows to be a documentary.

From the game's announcement blog entries when the game was announced as Shadows in May '24.

Ubisoft Quebec’s focus throughout the development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been to fulfill two iconic player fantasies – shinobi and samurai – and ensure that its late-Sengoku period setting, known for its political tumult, warfare, and dramatic social reformation, serves as an authentic backdrop for the pair.

Yasuke’s story was open-ended enough to allow for creativity; there are still plenty of questions and speculation surrounding him.

- Fantasies set in authentic backdrops
- Using creative liberties in Yasuke's stories because it's open ended.

Nowhere is it said that they intend to do historic re-tellings. Same as all previous games in the franchise.

But for some reason this particular case is being picked apart unlike previous games in the franchise.

My rebuttal to your multi-months crying is to laugh. I even said I would have preferred one myself, but your meltdown over it is comical. We know, you want your hot male Japanese samurai. You have a dozen posts crying about this.

You most certainly don't appear as sane going months bitching about it over and over again.

I'm sorry you expected ac shadows to be a documentary.
We expected AC:S to be made for profit, not to fit woke agenda, having no option of japanese male protag 4sure cost ubi hundreds of milions of usd in revenue, maybe only 200m lost, maybe 800m lost, we will never know, but we know its mountain of cash they decided not to make to appease some tiny minority with very leftists views, w/e financial consequence they gonna suffer as a result its their own fault.

Once tencent gets majority of shares, we will be at least getting based ancient china AC main entry, so im hyped for that at least, i bet u wont see any DEI if tencent has any say about it, and yeh- profits wont go to woke ubi anymore by then but to ccp, which cant be helped, if they make product im gonna enjoy- so be it- they will be financially rewarded for it, its not like winnie the pooh gonna buy some aircraft carriers or enriched uranium coz of my 70$(by then probably 99$ tho) copy anyways :)

U full on spewing bs, bro, those posts of mine were made last few days, u can check dates too.

And me explaining to woke ubi defenders like u why game flopped in japan and for sure gonna leave tons of cash on the table worldwide isnt crying- im just giving u my pov- most of the world who is antifeminist and antiwoke(at least male population)- we hate DEI, we want games to be like they were over 10years ago, focus on product quality, not agenda pushing, simple as that.
If dev/pub- in this particular case- ubisoft fails to provide high quality product they gonna sell fewer copies/make less revenue from it, its not rocket science- just basic supply and demand rule.

U gotta be at least tiny bit selfaware- there is a reason u got this tag:

SBI’s Resident Gaslighter

Maybe on rainbow forum or in ur leftist bubble of friends u dont talk to ppl with opposite views, but here u do, and u gotta at least recognise urself being on the crazy far left spectrum, guess what, world male population is mostly right or from ur biased pov far right, hence the reason woke games mostly dont click with us :)

This makes it even worse for you and I used those posts as example. You've been crying about AC: Shadows for months.

We can go as far back as December 2024 to find you bitching about it.
Bro, once again, posts in this topic had to be made recently by me, for the simple reason topic got made recently too.

And critique about the game doesnt mean crying/bitching, it means calling out its flaws, which were spotted by majority of potential players (once again, 66% of dislikes in AC:S reveal trailer), im in the majority of ppl who simply didnt like aspects of the game, and those werent some tiny side character, but protag duo, so essential aspect of the game, that should have been corrected if ubi wanted to reach good financial results here.

Im allowed to voice my opinions same way like u are allowed to defend ubi with last piece of ur soul, in the end we know who had to sell 25% of its best IPs to tencent just recently, and guess what, ubi didnt do it coz AC:S made them big profit, so in the end, players were right ;)

Historical fiction in video games - is a genre where the game's narrative, setting, and mechanics are based on or inspired by real historical events, periods, or cultures, but incorporate fictional elements such as characters, storylines, or alternate history scenarios. These games aim to immerse players in a believable past while allowing for creative liberties in storytelling and gameplay.

- DeepSeek with more sources I care to put here.

This whole conversation has become overly ridiculous. Ubisoft should just label their game as “fantasy” so nobody can complain. But… someone will.
