Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

Seems like good review scores for hated franchises bring the worst out of Gaf. Lmao

Though seriously, it look like this is decent. Might be worth a play-through if I can get it for $30-40.

It's crazy. I think a lot of people here expected or wanted this game to get eviscerated in reviews.

Good stuff. I have it on PC preorder before the reviews (£19). I was just happy to have the London setting and fool around a bit but sounds like there's some good parts to the game. Life in the old dog yet.

Really?
"Oh, this game takes place in London! I AM from London! Golly gee, better give this one a great score!"

Really? Really. Really?

I'm relieved to see some positive reviews out there. NeoGAF was killing my hype for this game, but deep down I wanted it to be good. I'm glad they dropped the shoe-horned online stuff, and the environment sounds beautifully realized. Looking forward to playing it.

Make no mistake about it. They had their torches lit and axes sharpened. Nothing left to do now but scratch their heads and cry foul. Makes me glad I keep an open mind and leave the door open for games to win me back over.

One VideoGamer reviewer gives Unity an 8/10 (before the major patches), another gives Syndicate a 5/10.

Hmm...

EDIT:

Oh, the Unity one was at least partially based on an all-inclusive review event. That explains the disparity. Nevermind.

Jim is a known lover of the Assassin's Creed franchise, Burns not so much. I'm actually quite surprised that Jim didn't get this one to review since he normally does. I guess he couldn't be trusted after his Unity review!

Some of the negative reviews read like they wanted to take pleasure in writing a bad AC review this year so no matter what they over blow any negative aspect.

Looking forward to trying it out myself. From coverage I've seen I will enjoy this more than Unity in every way.

I don't know how anyone can get exited about assassin's Creed nowadays. It always the same boring formula in different settings. Boring minimal gameplay walking from point A to B watching a shit load of cutscenes. At least if it had the solid gameplay of Shadow of Mordor it would be much more appealing.

AC: Unity - Metacritic 70-72 - "Assassin's Creed is over! What a disaster! This is horrible!"
AC: Syndicate - Metacritic - 78-79 - "Assassin's Creed is saved! Glad it's scoring well! Can't wait to try it!"

Apparently the difference between franchise-threatening disaster and complete and utter redemption for some people is 6 points.

... Methinks Metacritic shouldn't be a barometer of quality with this franchise. (needs a "Blood Dragon" version though).

Well it's good to see Ubi got their shit together for the most part. I'd hate to see AC go out on a sour note. It's a series I love, but I definitely won't defend it against shit like Unity, so bravo. Here's hoping they do another feedback survey in a month or so in order to highlight the positives to get things back on track. Still after AC 2016 a break would be welcome.

Can't believe how some outlets can give this a 9. That's bordering on dishonest, seriously WTF?

Now you know how I felt after playing The Phantom Pain and seeing the crazy amount of good reviews for a $60 game with f2p nonsense.

Never take scores seriously.

Best wishes.

This is true. I bought the metal gear sold 5 ps4 console too.

What a shit game

Back on topic. I will buy this game in a month or so when it is down to 30 euro

how can you put something like this

and still scores with a 8,5
lol

If it's fun and enjoyable despite flaws, why not? Uncharted 3 wasn't perfect. It didn't solve all of the series flaws (created new ones in some cases IMO), but it scored super high because it's fun.

One review (push start I think) has;

Much like the Victorian city that it's based upon, you have to dig into Assassin's Creed Syndicate in order to identify its problems. The core gameplay loop is solid and it's built upon a sound structure, but familiarity and filler lessen the appeal of this open world outing. Vastly improved performance and all around impressive presentation mean that London's most definitely not burning – but there may be a little panic in the offices at Ubisoft.

And gives a 6/10 despite saying somewhat positive things. Different strokes.

Any word on how the graphics stack up to Unity? That random Reddit poster said it looked worse.

The dynamic day night looks awesome and feels like a good gameplay add but it does come at a cost to clarity if you sit them side by side. However, when playing it, there are actually places that Syndicate looks really damn good.

It uses a more realistic lighting system than Unity. It does look worse, but not a bad looking game or anything.

The lighting system is probably less realistic but it's not pre-baked which makes a huge difference, both in terms of gameplay (dynamic day/night is always better) and graphics (indirect lighting is severely reduced because it needs to be calculated)

It does the opposite. It uses a more versatile, better performing lighting system. Unity's use of global illumination was a major component in its amazing graphics and terrible performance; even turning on Eagle Vision would noticeably improve the frame-rate.

Let's be honest, Unity is a pretty stunning looking game, saying it's not as good looking isn't really doing it too much of a disservice.

Yeah I agree. Still upset that we can't get Unity graphics with a solid framerate on PS4.

Oh I thought I read that they made it more like GTA where the lighting actively changes as it moves from day to night (unlike in Unity, where you had to manually change the time of day).

More realistic? Oh i got the impression worse. I watched AngryCentaurGaming's review and he said it doesn't look as crisp as Unity, lacks the lighting from Unity but it does have a better framerate, less popups and a day/night cycle.

Gamespot is usually conservative with their scores, didnt expect it to be 9/10 from them. Good scores so far...

Whoops guess I meant more practical, not realistic.

Yeah, they changed it to a dynamic day/night system. I suppose it depends what you mean by realistic. It's more realistic in the sense that time progresses smoothly, true. But the actual lighting is less realistic at any moment because they can't calculate many of the things in real-time which were pre-calculated in Unity's static times of day.

Forgive me for not wanting to hunt this down, but what have people read about any modern day/First Civ/conspiracy story/gameplay?

Those are the things I care about making a return to the series, they have been really lacking in the recent releases. Without those making a strong comeback, I can't see myself getting this game for anything over $20. It could be almost identical to Unity except contain those aspects and I'd be happy.

Another person who can't handle being in the minority position on a game. By the way, the "f2p nonsense" had no effect on my enjoyment of the 100 hours I played MGSV for.

The salt is going to be overflowing when MGSV ends up near or at the top of the GAF GotY voting, even more so than in this thread. It'll be great.
