Avowed | Review Thread

Because all those talented old guard, just like with Bioware, are now gone. You have the slacktivist "talent" pool to now contend with in the west.

People complaining about the YouTube video I posted, and complaining about the guy: I have no idea who he is, but he is just spitting facts after playing the game. I don't know why people are upset. Just because he has less subscribers than some of the big YT shills doesn't mean what he says is less right or wrong. I watched the whole thing, or I wouldn't have posted it. Both male companions are gay, side with the women of the game or you will be berated, barely any important men, most important NPCs are women. Some spoilers about a few side quests were mentioned, which I will obviously not spoil, but they seemed headache inducing. Him having few subscribers means he doesn't have much to lose, and can speak his mind, compared to paid shills: OMMGGGGG best writing ever!!!! Obsidian return to form!!!

Dropped kiddo at school, finished appointments and now I am all dedicated to Avowed.

Kacho Kacho Any fun I missed? How do I chime in now?
This was the spiciest part of the thread.

The game is too mid to be excited or disappointed. It's just flavorless slop to be consumed. It will be completely forgotten by the time Monster Hunter Wilds drops.

Can't post this without its appropriate companion piece Kacho Kacho :P

Review scores should have never been put on this weird pedestal people put them on IMO. The way I've always looked at it, majority are positive? I'll check it out. Majority are bad? I'll probably avoid it. But if it's something I'm genuinely interested in I'll check it out regardless of what reviews say or what the numbers are. People put way too much power into them, and it's all subjective, lol.
Yeah, yeah but that's what I'm saying. Basically everything slightly notable or big gets like at least an 8 now, so you cannot even use this broad measurement. It's totally diluted.

Then you get Asian developed games like this, with budgets probably the same ballpark as this slop, or even less.

They're going to eat the western studios up. And they should.

These corporations need to do lots of soul searching on whether it's fiscally responsible to keep these studios housed in the most overpriced places in the world for salaries in game-dev, while spitting out a mere shells of mediocrity of what they used to deliver on.

Overpriced "talent" with massively inflated budgets and misguided priorities.

Even in the marketing for Avowed, the creatives would throw their hands up and proclaim "it's an Obsidian game! you know what to expect."

I don't think that's a viable marketing strategy anymore.

is that blue furry guy for real? ha ha

Yes.

So after watching some lets play and reviews the things i got were:
-Sometimes simple gameplay elements which are fun nonetheless for example no lockpicking game which is annoying anyways after the 40th time.
-A good Story who expands later on
-Nice parkour gameplay with actually useful loot in treasure chests
-Solidly written character and companions
-Fun gameplay overall and not everything is lootable so the loot your get is important
all in all a good game it seems.

Why do they all have to chase that fortnite candy colour mushroom kingdom aesthetic, where the fuck are the dark fantasy games, I'm a huge RPG fan and the last 2 big western games are that wokeboke fest DragonShite and now this which looks like more of the same... Ffs, I'll be replaying the Witcher3 if things don't change

Hello Matt Hansen

Lol these reviews are way too generous.

Do tell how many hours you spent in the game.

The reviews are most likely on point. It's a decent game that wont win any awards, but something that can entertain most people for the duration of the campaign.

Hello Matt Hansen
Why? Just because i believe the game could be fun, of course my personal opinion is in it because, what surprise, its my take on.
It could be bad and i'm wrong and not Matt Hansen.
Also i watched Renfails lets play and he likes it, is he also Matt Hansen?

it really is just like outer worlds, & would appear to be the best the studio is capable of at this point, rpg-wise...

Space Marine CEO was all correct, if anything, those bloated multi-hundred million budget games are hurting the industry.

And I am so happy with the rise of Asia.

Visually stunning looking but I'm 50 man I ain't got the reflexes for souls like games and I always find Asian storytelling to be cringe AF, it's so overly dramatic as to verge on camp, but man some of those scenes remind what an old school God of War could've been like on PS5
Story telling was well done in ER and Wukong so if this follows along that path, then that department is promising.

They should be having an 11 minute video for gameplay today to get a barometer if it's more GoW or Souls.

I hope the writing is more mature than The Outer Worlds. The adult characters in that game are written how a 13 year old child perceives adults

I'm now becoming a true believer in that after seeing the fruits of the labor between the East and the West.

West is making poor investments regionally and "talent" wise. Money wasted, really.

The overabundance of female NPCs was a dead giveaway. Literally every gameplay clip has the MC talking to female NPCs. It's so blatant lol

Edit: and like always, you have to rely on no name YouTubers to get some honest feedback on this stuff. Everyone else glosses over it because *removed by mods*
I can't even tell if the *removed by mods* was part of your post or if your edit was so outrageous that even EviLore EviLore had to clutch his pearls and zap it.

Well, I think one of the things that not too many folks pointed out is that in the west, the new blood is poisoned. Just like the thread I made about Swedish game design master program, the new folks aren't trained to make fun games, they are trained to make social impacts. Eastern devs on the other hand, seem more genuinely passionate about making good games.

Europe is an emerging market.

Cheaper productions but quality no worse than most Western AAA games.

I still can't believe that Control was made on a ~$30 million budget only. Such a good fucking game.
