DF - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PS5 Pro vs PS5 Image Quality Face-Off

PSRR is fantastic 🔥
Seems like a very very slight loss in detail or blurring via pssr but the image stability is much better.
I'd take the image on the right anyday.

The Pro will shine in games that push the Amateur hard like Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, FF16, Alan Wake 2, Dragon Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, GTA 6, etc. Besides the fast loading Rift Apart is nothing special.

Yup.
I think we'll see some bigger differences once the system is out and places like DF can start to freely look at all supported games.
In this pre release period I think Sony is trying to find a way to showcase the improvement of the pro without necessarily shitting on the base model, which is why they focus on relatively old games that already look good on the current console.

They probably want the message to be "this game looks great on the base Ps5 but even better on the Pro" instead of "this game looks like shit on the base Ps5 but great on the Pro"

It's probably why we haven't seen that many third party games showcased either. Third parties just want to sell their games, they don't care on which console so they probably don't want some video that highlights how bad it looks on the more common machine.

very good observation...

The machine is not designed for everyone

Its made for people that want the absolute best place to play console games

Plus its a test bed for devs to get better at PSSR for the PS6

So from all us early adopters to make your PS6 better...

Calm down dude. I'm a huge PS fanboy and I ordered my unit the morning the preorders went live on playstation. I also have the disc drive and stand in my possession in anticipation of the pro.

I've seen a huge difference in some games like ff7r. Ratchet and clank is not one of them.

I feel like insomniac dropping the sharpness on the pro here is not doing it favor in these zoom in shot. In some shot it can even look softer than the performance mode. But overall image stability is much better. It a trade off I guess, but most people like myself prefer the pin sharp image.

The pro cpu essentially is still the same The base ps5, so taking the whole fidelity mode with RT is still not doable because the cpu isn't there.

I am totally fine and don't blame anyone who may or may not buy into this machine, I get both sides

More than twice the price and can barely see any difference unless you zoom in 300%. I know this isn't optimized for the Pro specifically or a remake. But so far I have seen nothing to make me shell out that kind of money. Sorry Sony, first time since the PS1 I'm not there day 1.

Rift Apart is nothing special but DD2 and Rebirth are real graphics killers :messenger_grinning_squinting:

I previously found Performance mode on with RT off and VRR off to be best for me on base PS5. This now looks like I'll have that image quality but with RT. The upgrade looks OK to me, but nothing I couldn't live without.

So VRR can negatively affect performance?

This video is basically everything zoomed like 10 times and slowmo. No one would notice these things playing the game.

I really want to see some faceoff of 3rd party releases tbh

This is an awful video.

He compares Fidelity mode to PS5 Pro Performance mode except one of these runs at 30 fps.

He also misses an obvious opportunity to compare the game running on a 4070 on PC... I wonder why...

Alex is doing the vs PC video...yeah it wasn't one of Oliver's better videos but the source material wasn't great either with Insomniac providing a relatively meager upgrade

Because it's a Pro video and should be compared to the regular PS5 as that's the comparison that is the most relevant?

What matters is how it stacks up to the PS5 since that's what it's upgraded from.

LOL... the amount of milking/farming they're doing on a console they said didn't need to exist is hilarious.

This could easily have been one video.

Comparing performance RT that runs at 40 fps or fidelity that runs at 30 with Pro Performance that runs at 60 is such fools game for an entire video. In one case you're getting double the frame rate and in the other you're getting 1.5x the frame rate, yet nearly the same visuals... largely downplayed in this video by the rare mention of actual framerate... something they're normally hyper fixated on.

Worst system upgrade ever . How the hell they are justifying the shitty price with this kind of upgrade ???

Fuck man Sony and MS are fighting for who can get scam the gamers the most.

Wait until the system is out and you can see the much bigger upgrades like FF7 rebirth... Its sonys fault that their advertisement campaign for this is dogshit

I expected better from insomniac tbh. There better be at least a significant FPS increase in the unlocked VRR mode.

Insomniac is busy working on Venom and Wolverine. I'm not surprised they're not doing a ton of work for their multitude of games.

They're updating

Spider-Man Remastered
Spider-Man Miles Morales
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart
Spider-Man 2

That's tremendous work given their busy schedule and how many games need to be updated.

Square Enix updated FF7 Rebirth but where is FF16?

Where is Cyberpunk 2077?

I'm not sure who else is out there updating 4 games.

I agree it should've been PS5 vs Pro vs PC instead of making 2 videos for an upgrade that's not substantial compared to others we've seen.

It's the difference when compared to a game that on PS5 used a decent resolution scaling method versus when compared to cases where scaling method turned out to be oddly bad despite starting from relatively high base resolutions. Ratchet had a very good IQ unlike FFVII. But not all games on PS5 have an IQ as good as Ratchet and not as bad as FFVII.

I suppose that, as happened in the last generation, the results will be varied and will depend on the circumstances of each game and its particularities.

This is a good example to show how quick the IQ can be made better just by switching an already existing Performance mode from other temporal solutions to PSSR. And the Insomniac one is even better than FSR if I recall correctly.

It's a 4 years old game, it's not going to be massively improved. Comparing it to similarly beefier hardware gives you an idea how how much of hardware boost is involved here.

Making a video on visuals for a 4 year old game while largely ignoring the performance boost is laughable.

Again 1.5x more performative than Performance RT and 2x more performative than Fidelity. That isn't being conveyed sufficiently in this video.

This is a horrible showing for a Pro enhanced game but it’s mostly likely not the fault of the pro. I don’t know what Insomniac is thinking

removed the sharpening pass
New noise and dithering patterns that feed into the RT reflections

Maybe it will look different/better in person but all I’m seeing here is a loss of detail and I never found the old perf RT mode to look bad

The only clear with imo are the particles

That'd just be DLSS vs PSSR. PC settings vs PS5 has already been done.

No, because the Pro's extra GPU performance isn't even being utilized here. They only swapped out IGTI for PSSR. The 45% better rendering and faster RT aren't doing anything. It'd be basically a DLSS vs PSSR comparison.

This game just doesn't have enough improvements to bother visiting again. I'm not even sure why Alex is doing a PC vs PS5 video if he is doing one. There really isn't anything to discuss. It's RT Performance Mode with much better IQ. No need for a 15 minutes video.

If you can't see a difference, you're blind.

I mean .. you're kinda proving his point with this.

It's taking a 3X zoomed in image and you still have to pick specific parts of the image to show that there's an improvement. This is barely above PS5/SX comparison differences in this case.

Well, it must be said that in this case the direct comparison with PS5 fidelity mode mostly serves to hurt PRO's initial messaging, not the best look. It all comes to down to "If you want to play at 60 FPS, you still have to compromise in IQ/settings but less than before." essentially. There are much more impressive upgrades like F1 2024.

Literally every DF and PC faceoff thread more often than not.

I wonder why that narrative is now being adopted? Hmmm, wonder what it could be?

It looks slightly sharper, but yes third parties is where the real difference will be felt
Newer and current developed games will have more of an impact as well. They're not going to break the bank on 4 year old games. Just set the PSSR to on and forget it.

No wonder Alex was licking is chops and hyper suggesting this one. Engagement wars.

It's the same narrative in all DF threads. In PC threads the console folks ask about console equivalent comparison while chastising expensive rigs because that exceeds the console price point. On console comparisons it's usually small differences in most cases with some rare games that show notable differences. This is a Pro console, 3x zooms to point out differences is not exactly a good selling point. But I guess it's harder to show performance differences in screenshots.

The last sentence is the crux. Same with different model graphics cards. The very same PC gamer conundrum, but it will be argued until they're blue in the face, on here and other places.

If you need to zoom in to see the difference, then you need glasses.

Question for GAF.

There’s currently a quality mode with VRR and unlocked frame rate that’s above 40 fps. Won’t the pro bring this to 60? Making the pro mode unnecessary/worse for users with VRR 120hz tvs?

I think there be like 5-10 games that Pro owners will continually remind us of how great it is, but I see the vast majority just being something no one outside of a super gamer DF type will notice. Super zoom 300% lenses and frame counters needed to tell us its "better."

Not worth it until I see a huge batch of games with stark differences.

So VRR can negatively affect performance?
I keep a log of all my games in a spreadsheet as to what I set them too (TV settings and game settings). And the 120hz mode VRR will mean that its chroma output will be 422 rather than 444 and my TV's image quality is at its best when I dont use VRR too. In my notes I put "With VRR disabled, you can turn on 120hz mode for better latency. But image quality looked better with 120hz off and no VRR. Keep in normal non RT performance mode."
