[Digital Foundry] Silent Hill 2 Remake on PS5 Pro: A Mixed Bag of an Update... And PSSR Has Issues

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Quality mode still has a lot more issues than before.

Going by other comments, looks like Quality is still with PSSR, just Performance drops PSSR for TSR.

The patch is basically a band-aid solution, nothing actual has been done, or at least that's what it looks like.

Wait wait wait ...

so the 'fix' is that they just removed PSSR and replaced it back with TSR ? and going by the ending part of the video, with both OG PS5 and Pro running TSR, the Pro is running just 2~3 frames faster? Unless it comes with a substantial DRS improvement, this is basically not above just playing the game on a regular PS5 at this point ..

bundylove bundylove you and this game's PS5 Pro patch are cursed.
they must be running it at a higher resolution since its 2-3 frames faster. remember they had locked pssr performance down to just 900p, but the base version runs at a dynamic resolution of 864p-1152p.

Exactly. Performance is back to where it was.
Quality is still with the broken pssr.
Both modes ad absolutely nothing new so zero extra features or higher lumen setting or any rt feature.

Why not leave the game alone as is till a working pro patch releases?
No one put a gun to their head saying they have to use pssr or else...

Maybe sony bullshited them by claiming switch over to pssr and the game will look better. Of course just doing that can be done in a short time without spending any reasources and now it broke thr game to a point where it will take way more time to get it fixed which mighr almoat not be worth it.
But devs should have known better.

There is a reason i dont update mozaik in fear that my custom post wont work after the update.

Oh well. I will wait. I have plenty of games that keep me busy till then. But let me tell you why i am mostly pissed about this.
I paid full price with the early access.
Played it, 2 hours in i was so blowen away like i havent been in years.
Made the stupid decission to play it on the pro in the best possible way.
Now i cant play it as i rather play in quality due to lumen ao .
On top of it, hold on to your butts, by the time i get to play it in all its glory there will be already a sale on it meaning i just wasted around 30 bucks and two packs of gummies to calm my ass down.

People need to realize ‘training for RT effects has no basis in reality. That’s not how models are trained. PSSR currently sacrifices image stability for in motion sharpness and you can see it highlight errors and the limitations of current shader effects in non RT rendering all the same as RT based rendering. We also have direct confirmation that there are devs using outdated versions of PSSR.

To say nothing of the fact that titles like Ratchet use PSSR with RT and exhibit none of the issues.

In Silent Hills case, it is unstable by nature, just try enabling the outline/posturize filter or black and white and it will help show the issues.

Or a simple example with The Last Of Us, pick up the newspaper and you can see how PSSR exaggerates the shading issues, again with zero RT.

Crap! If only we had the option of selecting which update to play with. 😔

Looks like I’ll be waiting for a patch where they remove PSSR from quality mode on PRO.
Why the hell would they remove PSSR from Performance but not Quality mode when they know both modes were having issues?

I havn't seen anyone speculate on that but yet again a decision that makes no sense

You can download the dll file and simply copy/paste it in the place where dlss is. It will replace the current version, but this doesn’t always work properly and may have some side-effects.
I didn't use the latest version for Silent Hill because i saw no difference. But it did use it for the original Death Stranding. And those annoying trails from the particles flying were gone.

I didn't notice any regression, though i only played for a few minutes. It's cool you can do that. I haven't updated the game itself, do updates also update this DLSS file?

Yup,

You are wrong here like I said, you can't make a judgment if you don't have the game on the pro and not working on UE5 engine. Look like the dev is correct here. Low quality HW RT.

Ignore the guy just look at the footage from 8:00.

I don't know why bloober even try lol. Just up software lumen quality. What are we doing here?
