[Digital Foundry] Star Wars Jedi Survivor PS5 Pro: Severe Image Quality Problems... But RT in Performance Mode Is Nice

now you are posting series x benchmarks when DF literally posted PS5 comparisons.
Damn. You are a pretty reasonable guy going from your postings but you are being so unreasonable here.

Watch the video especially from 8:05 is what you are looking for. The two versions pretty much identical.

Bonus, keep watching a bit further, it demonstrates how bad the base version was running the game.

Dude WTF are devs doing, dont they play test their games to look for differences? So disappointing.
Also in the conclussion Alex says this PSSR issues may be due to low input resolution making PSSR look worse but isnt the input res similar in Performance mode in games like FF7RR showing way better results.
Plus the Pro Quality mode in Jedi Survivor is inputing way higher resolution than base Quality Mode and still has issues, and those resolutions are higher than say TLoU input resolutions while looking much worse.

The input resolution of Rebirth is higher and even that game has issues with PSSR being unstable. Oliver from DF says that Performance mode on the Pro is less stable than Quality mode on the regular PS5.

The quality mode already had all the RT effects on PS5.

It just runs at a slightly higher resolution now compared to the base PS5.

I cant work the exact performance gain since i dont know what the horizontal resolutions are but if PSSR is scaling like FSR and DLSS then its 10% on shot 2 and 48% on shot 3. Not the 2-4x RT performance boost suggested by the leaked docs.

Apparently it averages 1440p most of the time while the base ps5 averaged around 1152p so a roughly 40% gain in pixels over the base ps5 on average.
I thought it was software rt on ps5 and the PC had a much more expensive rt option on high end cards? Where are the massive rt gains they were touting for rdna4:messenger_weary: man this is a rt showcase and even in this, all they can manage is this paltry boost.

there is no such thing as software RT on UE4. its hardware RT.

UE5's lumen has a software and a hardware version. Star Wars is built on UE4.

There is zero reason to go looking at old comparisons when we have current up to date comparisons from DF themselves.

You are choosing to ignore benchmarks in a thread about those specific benchmarks, and bringing in other data when it's not needed. We have everything we need to determine the performance. You dont need to go out and get other data. Everything is here already.

This game along with the issue with two other games; AW2 and SH2 remake, this issues is starting to get out of hand. Sony has to help this developers, especially this three games SH2, SW Jedi, and AW3, too solve there technical issues with ps5 pro. It is still very early in Ps5 pro. But I'm sure for the 4 years before ps6, everything will be fine and perfected especially knowing the nature of PSSR machine learning mechanics. It will continue to improve, updated, and evolve regularly. Good news is most games especially the 1st and 2nd party are impressive in Ps5 pro and some does not, even a patched but still performing pretty well in ps5 pro.

Not only PSSR is undercooked but where the hell are those substancial RT gains promised by Sony?

It’s mostly up to the developers to get the most out of the PS5 pro hardware.

This is nothing new. The hardware side could be very capable but if the software isn’t there it doesn’t make a difference.

Can’t really blame the “tools” here since Sony provides decent support.

"Lazy devs" is pretty much the built in excuse for every platform with a bad port.
Aren't consoles supposed to be better curated? We know Valve is hands off and let's basically any garbage into their store. And why isn't Sony sending developers to shitty Devs to teach them how to code?

Difference is so big in FF because normal PS5 version looked like shit, much worse than it should have with 1080-1440p native resolution. Even 1080p GOW3 remaster looks cleaner and sharper than Rebirth on PS5.
True but 2 games that have suffered a lot from the Pro are both UE5 games. Survivor especially is a technical mess on both consoles and PC.

Alan wake 2 seems like another slapdash pro patch as well. Basically I need to see some more developed third party PS5 Pro patches to make a judgement on PSSR.

It is disappointing that a few games have some technical issues with ps5 pro. But Ps5 pro is just a week old in the market. PSSR ML will continue to improve and learn new process, that is the nature of ML AI and developers will continue to learn the ins and out of ps5 pro.

Same with SH 2 were there is already a response from the development team. It really helps that Sony and the development team are made aware of the issues. Social media and vlogs has there uses despite of rampant toxicity and fake news and misinformation this days.

I confident 99% of games with pro patches will never match the results insomniac were able to get out of the base ps5.

The only way to get any developers to respond to technical issues these days is for DF to make a video about it.
It makes you think of those who complain, acusations of bias, criticize to DF for analyzing and commenting on games where the PS5Pro version is not good because they prefer not to talk about these instead of generating pressure for them to improve 🤗

That said, "investigating"? Isn't it obvious for them that IQ shows clear inconsistencies compared to the original PS5 version?🤔

He just ignores 90% of the posts that show his cluelessness and keeps spreading misinformation. I have no idea why he’s doing it, but the user name checks out.

This also shows that the console is not powerful enough. The cost of PSSR is high and there's nothing left over for other improvements. I knew something wasn't right when the previews first started dropping and we learned that many games were using Performance mode profiles instead of Fidelity Pro to hit 60 fps. I got mocked for complaining about it by Neogaf.

Then there's what I find truly unbelievable which is Sony's absolutely terrible support for their own console. There are 8 major Sony published PS5 exclusives without a mention of having any kind of support, now and in the future. There are tons of important 3rd party games not getting patches and then there are an increasing number of games that have been patched but the patches suck, like Silent Hill 2 and Rise of the Ronin and Dragon Age.

Notice also that the most demanding games, the ones most in need of the Pro, are still suffering from major issues- jedi survivor, Silent Hill 2, and Alan Wake 2! Finally, what is up with games like Callisto Protocol which was listed for weeks as having a patch but has now been removed from the list entirely with no update from anyone as to whether it will ever get upgraded? GT7 not having its Pro patch still. Monster Hunter Wilds removed from listing etc....i wouldn't mind so much if there was communication from Sony as to just what the hell is going on.

$800 console we deserve better
After seeing how games look from Sony, its less a hardware issue and more a “get your code optimization/CPU scaling in check.”

I always point to Starfield as a prime example of a game everyone said would only be 30fps on console, yet here we are with a 60fps due to better CPU usage.
Nobody is paying $1000 for the pro? Where are you getting that from? Trade in your ps5 and the price drops to $350.
In Canada it cost close to $1000 and even I was graphic whore enough that I was willing get one, you can’t find fucking disc drive and without that I can’t play none of my games I already own.
Yep. I bought the Pro+ Disc Drive bundle from Walmart. $1,200 after taxes…

But they released the patch anyway. Same for the PC version. That's two launches that Respawn botches.

Some people ain't happy about this though. They think DF made the video to make the Pro look bad.
For me the truth lies somewhere in-between.

Most of the games DF are doing coverage of for the Pro just aren't good enough on the base PS5/Series/PC to begin with so they've had years/months to bust the publisher/developers balls to improve the base PS5 version at the very least. because most of this gen feels like games are relying too much on technical artists that can get things to work, but not in a performant manner like a programmer with expert knowledge of UE4-5 would, and they then typically lack the artistic skills to balance scaling back the graphics in a way that doesn't massively offset signal to noise ratio that has made most games feel like they were designed around the XB1/XsS we don't believe in generations mantra.

Whereas IMO DF have tactically waited to use the Pro as a relaunch of their ball busting strategy which completely trolls Pro owners - of which I'm not one - but might still get some games improved. But at the end of the day on a technical level games this generation haven't been good enough, and even games like Rebirth only do well with PSSR because it was a sequel to a very clean looking PS4 game and launched on OG PS5 looking very cross gen.

Ideally DF would be doing articles about the reality of games at large technically underwhelming this gen and then looking further than UE%5 being too much for consoles - like John did in the Friends Per Second segment - and actually find out what the brain drain level is in these developers, or if it is a fault of Series abstracting the hardware too much and becoming the common denominator this gen, or something else like too much early dev focus on PC ports, etc.

I never thought I would say it but Respawn should probably just use Frostbite. They make good games and Jedi Survivor is amazing. They just don't seem to know how to use Unreal. Can't always blame the engine. Gears 5 ran at 60 fps on the Xbox One.

Moderated wildly
Just tone back the rt make it like ps5 quality mode. Look to bump the resolution as much as you can to give PSSR a better baseline and then take it from there.

I think it will look tons better and performance will be on point.

Nowhere I assume, but I’ve heard that one can brute force it on PC with enough grunt.

Much the opposite, you can't brute force even with 4090/9800X3D combo. It's pretty optimized on PS5 though, they just release a flawed patch that they said they're trying to fix.

This game has strict CPU limitations so a "high frame rate + RT mode" cannot be added.
The PS5 Pro's advantage in this game is that it is able to run at 60 even in Kobo with RT on a Zen 2 CPU.
However, the resolution of the PS5 Pro is too low, so I hope that the next patch will add a high-resolution mode without RT.
