At least according to this interview, looks like Weekes did the writing for Mordin for Mass Effect 2 as well:

Karpyshyn's involvement seemed to be the basic concept and then telling Weekes to go write the character.

Anyways, the Weekes we knew is clearly gone.

That video is depressing. We had it so good back then. Weekes was a good talent in the 'before times'.

The idea that throwing DA under the bus will somehow improve the quality of ME (I guess to dedicate more time to it?) is delusional, it's the same clueless devs doing crap way above their capacity

I was referring more to them using Dragon Age as a platform to deliver a lecture on hot button political/culture topics. If Dragon Age grossly underperforms, maybe theres less of a chance that stuff makes its way into the ME game.

Now whether or not they still have the chops to make a great Mass Effect game period, I dont disagree its likely they dont lol.

Can't really comment on the dialog at this point. I'm still early in the game.
Won't get into all my issues with the game, most of them are mentioned multiple times through these 32 pages...

I do think the environments are fucking incredible. From a fantasy perspective they are Chefs fucking Kiss good IMO. I played a side quest last night that was "hard to find" (it wasn't) but...it was fantastic. It was lore heavy, and the writing was 10,000% different in tone and execution compared to the core "linear" portion of the game I had played up to that point (about 7 hours in).

It most certainly feels like there was a great game there at some point (well a great game for me I guess) and some of that shows through in areas that are not overshowed by the main storylines dialogue presentation and abysmal character "personalities".

On a side note...this is the first game I have ever played on a 4k display over 120hrz that just let me choose "ultra" all the way down the settings page and it runs like a dream. It is insanely well optimized....so much so I think they just spent 10 years on the environments and system tech (i mean...frostbyte so yeah) then 2 months on the story and dialogue "choices".

The main writer of Veilguard, formerly known as Patrick Weekes, worked on all of the Mass Effect games, including the best DLCs, and was responsible for superbly-written characters like Mordin Solus. Clearly something went wrong between then and now, though.

Hmm yes I wonder what could've happened between then and now...

Trick Weekes uses they/them pronouns and identifies as pansexual and non-binary.

Found it.

The best way I can describe the characters is.......plasticy. Yeah.....some weird hybrid of Dreamworks characters and people. It isn't horrible, but I'm not loving it. The environment, however, looks fantastic, imo.

Shouldn't have spoiled the fun you'll have with such crafted piece of work that is the dialogue, have fun... 🤐

If they added mastectomy scars in a fantasy game where fking magic could fix crap, imagine whatever mind numbing stupid "current age" thing they can add in a futuristic game where you get to interact with other planets and races

And if DAV flops, I don't think there will be a Bioware at all, also what's left to sell to the audience when they made flop after flop 🤷‍♂️

I always found that interesting since he's been happily married with two sons for over a decade now...
It's a safe play right?

Already married with kids almost out the door, why would you care what anyone thought of your partner and how you run your relationship at this point? Just change your bio and have several years of job security and probably promotions to boot. Climbing the corporate ladder just looks different now? Not saying this person is a grifter or doesn't have strong convections around how they identify but...

I just assume he’s a weird / eccentric guy who bought in on current day identity politics because of his social circle. It’s not genuine.

If he has lived on the west coast all these years and has embraced that culture then I'm really not surprised. For me, everything I read about that area......sounds like an entirely different country. Probably why I hear so much about folks moving elsewhere.

He’s definitely a product of his environment like most of these people. Put him in an area detached from it and he likely doesn’t change. Identity politics is the new goth for weirdos.

I think it's probably done well over a million. The Steam analytics suggest it's sold slightly better than Metaphor.

Metaphor sold over a million in a day, and hasn't cracked the top 10 on PSN for October in the US or EU. Dragon Age is also above it on both PSN charts despite it only having 1 day worth of sales data.

At this point in time, Its fairly safe to say that the Bioware that once was, is no more. I'd had high hopes for Dragon Age and Mass Effect, but I think I'll probably skip them both from what I've seen the "Future of the franchise" has been with Dragon Age (and now that that team is is on Mass Effect), and Mass Effect.

Steam analytics don't suggest that it sold slightly better, they suggest that it sold worse.

Like Metaphor averaged 50k-ish players throughout the whole launch week, Veilguard only 35k-ish. The dotted line is the average.

Veilguard also doesn't look all that hot going into the 2nd weekend.

I wish we had tracking like this for consoles, I wonder how it did on PS5 and Xbox.

Asmongold speculates that Jason got reliable information that the game is underperforming and that’s why he deleted his tweet. Hilarious if that’s what happened.

We could guess it was underperforming already, I'm sure this game wasn't cheap to make and they probably had Inquisition-like expectations for it

Inquisition ended up selling 12 million and EA probably thought this would be similar but it's looking more like Inquisition was a fluke

I do not see any reason to compare Metaphor to DA:V. Metaphor was made on a budget of peanuts and it shows in the game. Nobody is praising Metaphor for the OMG so great hair or lovely vistas. If these 2 games sold the same, one of them is a mega bomba. Also, Metaphor will get the usual Atlus treatment of Reload, Anniversary, Golden, Royal versions further extending the full-priced sales with minimal effort.

Hardly any. Just wanted to get some screens to show how it looked on Pro. I'll be playing more in a bit. Low expectations for the writing/story, obviously, but I hear the gameplay is good.

Seth Meyers Ok GIF by Late Night with Seth Meyers

Wish I could ignore shitty stories and enjoy the ride ... it would open up more things for me to enjoy .. but my brain just dosent work like that anymore... I did in early life and was able to enjoy some really bad movies lol .. but for quite some time I just cant.... for any kind of entertainment...

Outside ANIME ... anime for some reason I can ignore the stupid writing for the fun of it, I think is the absurd of all that makes more easy to do it and the lack of woke influence in most of them.

I guess the problem with games is that now days they take everything too serious and with "real life problems and politics" and the writing with all this DEI writters and tropes is atrocious so ignoring this plus the usually written errors is pretty fucking impossible.

The Thieves Guild don't steal things because that would disrespect other cultures

Oh believe me, that's only half the trouble, there are a ton of such moments. Let's say there is a faction of Antivan Crows in the game, actually a faction of hired killers, at the mention of which people in the world of DA simply start to panic and they run away in horror. In fact, a faction of ruthless killers for whom human life is worth nothing at all, and if you sign a contract with them for a person, he is dead without options.

Not only is this faction now unable to protect its leader (Top Secret Organization), but now we have another party member from this organization, Lucanis Dellamorte. There will be a plot spoiler below, I will hide it, but if you go through his plot -
I'll try without big spoilers just in case, he has a demon sealed inside him, we help him (His relative will be to blame... what a surprise... Who has been spying for a long time and dumping information to enemies) and the player will have a choice - attention... let him go (he is a relative, you can't kill him...), or put him in prison... A truly bloody order of assassins, who have killed thousands of people on order before, including people of the first magnitude in the kingdom, will either let the person go or put him in prison... If you make one decision in the dialogue before this, you will not be able to let him go, you can only put him in prison.

I'm just honestly shocked by how the story and dialogues are written in this game, and oh my god how many inaccuracies and blunders there are in it regarding the lore of the game...

I mean......I know about the nonsensical woke stuff that has been shown, but I'm just talking about the other normal banter. So far it is fine.
If you don't mind characters in a grimdark medieval fantasy setting talking and sounding like heroes from an MCU film, you won't have any real issues.

Generally I'm the same way. If a story is shit then I usually have little motivation to keep going. If Veilguard's writing overall is as shitty as the clips we've seen then I won't last long.

I don't think there will be any special problems if you just don't pay attention and don't delve into the plot, then yes, stupid things will pop up. The game is perceived much simpler and easier if you don't know the world of the game and haven't played the previous parts. Well, perhaps, except that the dialogue wheel that appears, the answer options on it will not always coincide with what the character actually says. That's why sometimes there may be moments when you want the character to say one thing and he says something completely different.

Game is too kind and soft, so it is perceived as a fantasy fairy tale, if you don't really go deep. This is directly in contrast to the same DAO, where in the first 30 minutes of gameplay, if you want, you can kill one of your first companions (Sten), and then later in the story, kill another one if you want to (Zevran). And there are many other bad things you can do in the game. There were even walkthroughs of the worst decisions in the game.
It was a very warm and kind game for its time. ^_^

Smash JT confirming through a separate source (this one at Bioware, he says) Endymion's earlier report about a high level of returns. Also, both sources estimate that the game has sold about 500K. Take it fwiw. It's still unconfirmed rumor, but there are two sources now.

FFS I expected Veilguard to be somewhat woke and cringe but it’s so much worse than I ever expected. This is getting into Dustborn territory where it’s so artless and heavy handed that it’s indistinguishable from parody.
Yeah I tried giving the small benefit of a doubt for Dustborn when I first saw videos of it on youtube. Thought it was a parody at first too until I saw the dev. Games like Dustborn and Veilguard are what people think the crazy woke lunatics are like and sadly they really are like this which makes it even worse. Not surprised now that I see how completely twisted and insane most of the woke nutjobs are like.

In the past woke shit would just seem off and a bit weird from normal sane people but now it's so bad that it should have been a parody or a joke but it's not lol.

Half a million copies? That's too low even for this trash. On a Concord flop scale, it would score around 0.4 to 0.7 Concords.
I think it definitely sold more than that, even more than 1 million. But for a big budget western and well known rpg. Even 3 million as their first week announcement would just be borderline okish at best. Their message about this having a chance to be borderline breakout would be them thinking it'll be a smash hit like what Skyrim or Witcher 3 was DURING their time let along now in 2024. So 50% of them probably thought it'll be a big surprise over 10 million copies sold within a week or something. Probably would have if they didn't include any of this crazy shitty garbage and got better writing like Witcher 3 when it first announced.
