Eurogamer "Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is another PS5 Pro patch that arguably looks worse than the standard PS5 version. What's going on?"

next year would probably have been too late.

it already took 1 year longer for it to release compared to the PS4 Pro.
Yep. They already waited a full year likely to reduce costs but still launched it at an insanely high price, and to give PSSR more time to train. Problem is that these geniuses likely trained the upscaler on non-RT games that their first party studios were making. What they didnt realize is that Sony first party phoned in the first half of this gen with cross gen games or next games without RT. Only insomniac featured RT reflections and even they didnt bother adding RTGI, RT AO or RT Shadows which seem to be the culprit here.

Kinda ironic how Sony's own lazy devs ended up fucking over the premiere AI scaling solution.

FSR is always an option. It was used on Avatar in the first place and looked better then so devs should use their own eyes and implement what works best. If all someone did was do a CTRL + F to replace FSR with PSSR with no real testing then that's on them.

they better fix this shit soon or the switch 2 with DLSS will make the situation embarrassing for sony.
That is what i've been thinking after watching the AW2 PS5 vs Pro vs DLSS Digital Foundry video. They show the comparisson vs DLSS scaling from around 864p and DLSS looks surprisingly good even at that low resolution. You would think the Switch 2 will be scaling from around that input res, maybe even higher when docked. If they use the latest DLSS version there is a high chance they end up with better IQ, that will be funny lol.

Donsent know how people can defend this honestly.... if ai upscaling was a brand new tech... but it is not ...I know things will eventually get better and its not all the upscaler fault... but I canot defend a product launched into the market with obviously "blind spots" when theres already better upscale tech outthere for so much time... so if you are going to put something new on the market even if not better than what others have at least should be 100% funcional.

For me theres no excuse... pointing thingers only to the devs is the easy fanboy way out.

No need to spend time to take my previous messages. I have a PS5 and a Series X, and as i said, I play most of the time with Series X.

Still, the PS5 PRO, for its price, is a scam and a shitty hardware given its performances with so many games.

Just relax, the truth speaks for itself. Probably tools are coming 😜
The results do speak for themselves. You’re right. Plenty of good games to appreciate.

What you own is irrelevant. Just relax and let folks like what they like. 😜

Wow. Developers really don't give a shit anymore huh? Hand them great hardware and new technical solutions and they think that this shit is worthy of release in a patch, when they actually bust the visuals.
I mean we don’t know what they are doing at work. Could be overworked and underpaid with tight deadlines so QC gets dropped. I would put the blame on management.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Sony is really fucking up this generation outside of their base console hardware.
I blame the management that took over.
They had everything set up for them and did nothing but port everything to PC and even that they fucked up with forced logins
5 years and nothing but what was layout for them when they took the reins.
It's a shit show.

Shitty performance? There are games were the PS5Pro can provide similar experience as my $2500 PC for fraction of the price.

For example, Callisto Protocol. I can play this game in 4K TAA native with max settings (63fps built-in benchmark), but performance can drop to around 42-50fps at certain levels. This is still perfectly playable on my VRR monitor, but in order to play this game at locked 60fps I actually need to use 4K FSR quality (1440p internally). At this point, the PS5Pro is very close (dynamic 1296p-1440p reconstructed to 4K) and it might even offer a better experience if there's no traversal stuttering like on PC.

I have also compared other games too. The Last Of Us Remake runs at 60fps TAA native on my PC and the PS5Pro offers the same image quality thanks to PSSR. In Resident Evil 4 Remake on the PS5 looks comparable to native 4K TAA on my PC too.

I spend three times more money on my PC compared to the PS5Pro, but I cannot say that my PC offers much better experience in these particular games. Only games with PT / heavy RT can show a bigger differences on my PC (games like Cyberpunk, Alan Wake 2, black myth, or even the witcher 3 look and run amazing on my PC).

I can't say anything bad about the PS5Pro, apart from PSSR implementation in some games like Avatar or Jedi Survivor. These games have noise and flickering problems because of bad PSSR implementation, but that's a software problem, not a hardware one. I remember what DLSS looked like in the first few games and the results were not good too. I suspect that some games might use older versions or PSSR, because there are also games that has stunning image quality in PSSR mode.

If I couldn't afford a high-end PC, I'd definitely be interested in the PS5Pro, as the image quality in 60fps modes is often terrible on both the XSX and the base PS5. If you have base PS5 games like FF7 rebirth or Stellar Blade will look like crap in 60fps modes. Of course you can run these game in quality mode at 4K on the base PS5, but that's 30fps. The PS5Pro offers better image quality than the quality mode on the base PS5 and you can play at around 80fps. 30fps vs 80fps is massive difference dude. I'm sure Sony will fix PSSR issues soon, because so many people noticed problems with PSSR implementation in certain games, and then every single game will look way better on the PS5Pro.

This looks like a pretty bad situation for people who can't afford to splurge on an expensive console. Fortunately, I can lol

Expect Monolith Soft to go as low as they can with DLSS.

And I got attacked in another thread for saying that this upscaler is a mess. Well, the truth speaks for itself
Sorry brother but you have to take the heat.

I am too busy with work lately to give my 2 cents but i also got laughed at and called all sorts of things by users who are very fuckin quite right now.

Well i proved my points and now df did it too so my work here is done.

Moral of the story is, never ever underestimate a bundy.

Once i am free again, which by the looks of it wont happen for months though we are starting to use AI to help, bought license and shit, i will be back to point out the good and the bad of the pro.

Sadly avatar is also a game a shelved for a pro patch and got screwed once again.

Oh well alan wake 2 is a long game so i will wait but its time for sony to step in and help.

You hear me sony. Do your job or i will come for you .

Its fine, I don't take it personally, I know some people here will like me and some dislike me and I am fine with that. That being said, I just wanted to emphasize that what I said previously was not me being hyperbolic, rather being honest with the fact that the Pro support situation is not great, and we have almost a daily example of this problem

I guess some people get defensive because they have invested a lot of money in this console but if we dont call out the situation I think its worse for the consumer in the end

TBF, your post was a bit of a hit and run. You just called it a "joke of an upscaler" and that was all. Comes across as trolling and people are not going to respond well to that. So yeah....that was indeed being hyperbolic since there have been successes as well as "not great" situations.

Again, I'll point to DF's own words...

"PSSR has delivered many excellent results: Stellar Blade looks absolutely phenomenal, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a game transformed, while all of Insomniac's games enjoy substantial upgrades thanks to PSSR. "

The good does not take away from the bad, or vice versa.

Seems like PSSR struggles with lower resolutions when it comes to upscaling, not a surprise as even DLSS can struggle with them as well...I mean it's an upscaler hard to rebuild what is already missing in chunks without a significant hit...at least for now

We need to point out these observations .
See how DF is wording their finding. Its a one to one copy of peoples comments on this forum prior of them even talking about any of this.
I takes nothing to boot up a game that you already played on the base ps5 to realize something is very off.

And hey, people will attack you for everything they dont like to hear but they come around eventually. No one likes me here either but i dont care. I just have to learn to ignore the bad ones that piss me off and life is happy again

I really didn't expect a lot when I bought it. I'm considering this a purchase meant for the time till PS6 releases. That said, Sony somehow still managed to disappoint me 😂

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
This whole console really is kind of a POS. Or at least Sony's handling of it. If it's that difficult for devs to achieve decent results to the point where many notable games are a downgrade from weaker hardware, then there's something wrong on Sony's side.

None of these fuckers are getting underpaid, and they're not crunching like they used to when games were actually good more often than not (hyperbole, pls don't @ me).

I'm sorry but this console is fucking shit. Maybe by the time the PS6 comes out PSSR will be ready to go, but right now it's a joke.
Joke post or what

There are more than a few examples out of PSSR implementation done right. Your post would make sense if we have one game running amazingly well and everything else being shit, but its not.

Joke posts are the one defending this shitty console. For its price, I would say that it is fine to have 90% of games running fine, 10% to be yet optimised. The ratio is instead now something like 50/50 or probably games to be optimised are higher than the ones that run fine.

So yes, right now the console is a scam if games run better on the base PS5.

Is that the console's fault or the ones responsible for optimization? Is it high-end PC's fault(s) when games don't run well or the folks responsible for making sure they do?

A scam, by definition, is a dishonest scheme or fraud. That's not what we have here.

As a consumer, I do not care whose fault it is. So for me, it is a scam.
Nothing dishonest happened. You can be disappointed in something without it being a fraud. That some games have issues doesn't negate the many that don't.

As a consumer, I'm satisfied with my purchase.

As a consumer, based on what I am seeing, I would not be happy, at all.

And that's fine. Different opinions.
Yep, that's perfectly fine, I just prefer some clarity on who shoulders blame when it comes to issues. I don't generally blame my hardware (be it console or PC) unless said hardware causes known development hurdles (GameCube, PS3, Xbox One, etc). The Pro is a fine machine, and while PSSR has produced good results, it still needs improvement (which it will get).

I think what sucks for developers is that games being released AFTER the PS5 Pro release are being forced to support PSSR, it's not optional to have PSSR.

The games BEFORE PS5 Pro, they're optional if developers want to add PSSR.

I think it's wrong that there isn't an option to disable PSSR and have the base PS5 visuals as some might prefer it over what they're currently getting.

For me, that flickering is ANNOYING. Once you see the flickering, you can't unsee it and it only gets more noticeable.

Who told you this lie?

That's not an improvement to the pipeline.

Then they need to improve their pipeline.

mckmas8808

This is a failure on DF as much as Sony. Their one job is to review the product on day one. They made a long 2 hour video and failed to accurately summarize the console's shortcomings. Lots of giggles and dumb inside jokes at the expense of a well rounded opinion on the console.

The fact that nearly every single RTGI game is suffering from this shouldve been immediately flagged by DF. it took me 2 games to figure out what was going on. DF had access to all 6. Avatar just released but they had access to Alan Wake, outlaws, jedi survivor, dragon age, silent hill 2 and dragons dogma 2 from day one. 2.5 hour review and they couldnt flag this as an issue?

Now a month on, after the return period has expired, they are slowly covering these problematic games one video at a time. Too little too fucking late for people who forked over $700 after your glowing review.

If anybody bought a PS5 Pro expecting to get the best out of it within month one, then they are idiots. I'm assuming most bought the console with "YEARS" in mind, not 40 days.

As a consumer, I do not care whose fault it is. So for me, it is a scam.

Then don't buy a gaming PC. :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I wonder if we're seeing contractual obligations being met. I know there's a date from which all released titles must have support for the Pro's hardware. I'm curious if some of these titles we're seeing with their terrible PSSR implementations fall into that category. Since PSSR clearly isn't as plug-and-play as DLSS, Dev's need time to correctly setup their frame construction to let the upscaling work - and that might require a good bit of work for some titles. In order to meet their contractual requirements with Sony, they're putting out patches to get Pro support in, but don't have enough time or capacity to do it correctly.

I can't find any mention of Robocop getting a PS5 Pro patch yet. Does it have one?

also, per NXG, BG3's PSSR can look softer compared to the OG PS5 version with a minimal couple of frames improvement, I would put that under so-so, personally.

I would swap DD2 and BG3. DD2 has some blurring on grass, but DLSS suffers from the same issue. You just got a bit of noise, but the trade-off is a massive frame rate improvement.

BG3 doesn't do much more. Nicer IQ, but it was decent on the PS5 already. What it needed was to iron out those huge fps drops in Act 3 and it doesn't do much there.

I look at it this way; is the experience on the Pro that much better? In DD2, it is. In BG3, meh, not really.

A bit off topic but Silent Hill 2 is one of the biggest disappointments graphically and without Pro Support. I know they have reversed the Pro Patch but the FSR upscaling is so bad on this game that playing on my Pro, for some reason it actually looks better on my PlayStation Portal in 1080p then it does on my 4K TV. This generation of gaming is so messy and fucked.

What incentive is Sony giving their 3rd party publishers to go back and rework their games to take full advantage of PSSR?

This is why if there are any significant benefits to be had using this tech, we"re likely only going to see it become more consistent from new games releasing in the future.

This is not a defense for the Pro btw. Buying a Pro feels like you are buying a promise that the benefits will eventually be worth the wait.

Unsure if you're referring to me about defending the console because I'm not defending anything. Just going by what I've seen and heard so far regarding the pro console and the games optimized for it.

Either way consumers are free to choose to buy the scam or the base PS5. They have that option and having more options is good.

Im honestly happy I didnt folded and bought this console ... as of now I really cant justify the price tag vs the upgrades we are getting ... Im afraid that when the console really starts showing a influx of optimized games we will be close to the ps6 generation.

But at the other hand ... Im really tempted to eventually buy the ps5 pro and ride it until the ps6 pro comes out, totally skiping the ps6 as I should have done iwith the ps5 if I knew more about this gen. All in all my times with cheap consoles are done ... im going the pc route or will stay only with the PRO's for now on
