Also sidenote I'm surprised at how comparatively tame Starfields reception seemed to be for how terrible of a game it was.

Took me two months of cope to admit the game was god awful. By the time I got there the discussion had passed. Still hard for me to admit because I love Bethesda's previous games so much.

With Fallout 76, I didn't really care because the game wasn't made for me. But Starfield? That hurt. Still does.

Every time there is some controversy expected (or you released Fallout '76 and then do not completely hit the ball out of the park as you hyped it up with your next game) attempting to silence any criticism conflating assholes, critics, and death threats sending criminals ("oh get fu&£d!" is not a death threat not a rape threat btw, pretending it is anything but an insult starts crossing into weaponising your discomfort to shut off any criticism… it will not make what you made better nor will help you feel better in the end).

Then again, your selective outrage is selective and undermines your point… but surely anyone can find you in the TLoU threads outraged by people calling the creator Cuckman, making crude jokes about the voice actors and characters, and transforming ND related threads in a vitriolic woke vs anti-woke war of words… or any other similar thread on Sony's side… you know showing empathy for those devs…

Purkeypile is a pretty unusual surname and the poor chap's probably taken stick for it all his life which might make him more sensitive than most on this topic.

Surely 99.9% of negativity and vitriol is addressed at 'Bethesda' (or Todd Howard himself) rather than the thousands of individual devs involved. Venting online is fairly unproductive but it's understandable - threats of violence however are totally unacceptable.

Harassing developers is always a dickhead thing to do, but it's worth taking a minute to wonder why you never heard Eiji Aonuma saying 'it doesn't matter how good the Breath of the Wild sequel is, our team will still get death threats' or Hidetaka Miyazaki saying 'it doesn't matter how good Elden Ring is, people will still harass us online'.
