Most definitely lacking the visual flair of a Bungie game and the original reveal trailer. Mostly talking about environments.Well the idea sounds good on paper. I suspect many people to dismiss the game just from their first impression looking at the artstyle, though.
Helldivers isn't really an extraction shooter, and even if it was its not the only one.so in the end, is Helldivers the only successful extraction shooter so far
I certainly did.Well the idea sounds good on paper. I suspect many people to dismiss the game just from their first impression looking at the artstyle, though.
Nah, they fucked up the franchise.Bungie should be releasing a Destiny 3 about now and this game should have been a Multi-player mode within it.
If they get Destiny success Marathon will be in fantastic shape.![]()

Bungie: How Weapons Tell the Story in Destiny
Art lead Tom Doyle explains the importance of guns.sea.ign.com
no, no, no... sigh... you're just not getting it...Ok....so basically all Roguelikes and Extraction shooters?
When I've played EFT I've had some bad runs back to back to back and when you start seeing your gear dwindle it makes you not want to play. It forces you to play like a pussy not taking encounters.Extraction shooters by definition are a hardcore experience. You're in it to win it.
No one walks away from a losing streak, losing all your gear and loot and says "hey at least I have anecdotes for my group chat".
Just about any game would love Destinys successIf they get Destiny success Marathon will be in fantastic shape.
Seems Bungie are on their last chance, if this is DOA I'd say it's a wrap unfortunately. This game is threadbare and unfinished, and they're already making excuses for it. The art style already looks dated, I'm kind of sick of seeing it.
From Halo to this. Just sad.
I agree. I am guessing moderate success but I am banking on Bungie's fun gunplay to keep some people engaged. However, if they go down the money/no reward for time trap it's over. Nobody wants to play a game for hours with nothing to show for it.Just about any game would love Destinys success
This wont sniff that that level of success though
I really hope they have some sort of open beta to give people a taste of maybe 1 map as I do really want to see how it feelsI agree. By systematically firing all their employees that had actual talentI just watched the Halo 3 trailer in another thread and am wondering how the fuck Bungie went from that (20 years ago) to whatever the fuck this Marathon disaster is.
This is how it looks whenever there are 4 or 5 players on screen at the same time. Almost works as dazzle camo because I have a hard time making out who is who.
Don't you keep your gear in those though?Ok....so basically all Roguelikes and Extraction shooters?
I think Joe Ziegler was brought in to get this mess out the door. It clearly needs another year or two of development.I guess this GaaS game was too far into development for Sony to pull the plug.
so in the end, is Helldivers the only successful extraction shooter so far
Are you serious, lol? This is literally what happens during and after any multiplayer match if you play with friends, or happen to watch any streamers. After a close loss you and you friends can discuss what mistakes you made or what you could have done differently to change the outcome. If you had a close win, vice versa. This goes on in forum discussions, places like Discord and reddit. For game modes that have a limited respawn system like Battle Royale or Extraction, the margin of error is much smaller, so any information you can get or pass along that can help you or teammates is paramount. Its less important on traditional game modes like Team Death match because you can run a around with reckless abandon knowing that you can respawn and try a new weapon, attachment or take a different path. Some developers have this weird, idealized view that their player base will engage in some deep meta discussion about the match that just happened and that just generates "value" into the gameplay, when the reality is that no one cares go agane.
For me it just betrays a complete lack of depth in the gameplay and formula itself, if you have to try to portray your game's depth as some intangible discussions and anecdotes that the devs feel like are supposed to be happening after matches.
They tried this before when Destiny 1 launched. "They kept everything hidden so we could discover it all for ourselves!". Turns out, they showed off everything in the game except the raid.In the other marathon thread there were a video from gamespot or something saying theres really no story so far, and the game being set for september (?), it seems pretty worrying, unless they are keeping all the cards for themselves

Bungie isn't talking about the game's story thoGame Director: "every time you [play Marathon] you should expect to come out with a good story."
Gameplay Reveal and Gameplay Overview trailers:
Good job
- Aren't telling a story
- Are quickly cutting through gameplay
- Third-person narrator explains gameplay mechanics, is not telling a story

I think in Skillups hands on video, he was told they haven't even written the story yet, and it's only 6 months from release. Sounds like a Destiny situation to me.
then why no solo campaign like the og game???????????????????????????????????
Good, they should just scrap the story, this is a multiplayer game.I think in Skillups hands on video, he was told they haven't even written the story yet, and it's only 6 months from release. Sounds like a Destiny situation to me.
You are referring to the lore and narrative backstory. The game director and I are referring to the anecdotes and stories that players create themselves while playing the game, such as: "I was chasing this player through hallways and suddenly 5 of his friends showed up doing dance emojis and throwing grenades at me. Haha I died, but what a story!"Bungie isn't talking about the game's story tho
Player-generated story anecdotes are not being shown in the Gameplay Reveal nor in the Gameplay Overview, but are supposedly a pillar of the game experience according to the game director.

In contrast to the Escape from Tarkov trailer, which tells the story of two groups of players running into each other in a crowded hallway, with one player pretending to be dead to surprise the enemy, and other such anecdotes.
In case you havent noticed, every on online FPS game has turned into sweat lobbies, due to the proliferation of social media, crossplatform lobbies and the ability to earn revenue from streaming. Anyone who spends any considerable amount of time playing a competitive online game is a try hard. Casual online gaming died a long time ago. The forever wood, brozne and silver players just arent that good, but that doesnt mean they wont have any discussions about their experience when they're having fun. Having post match discusion about your game casual or not has been the norm for the past decade.I've "played pvp" in multiple fps games ever since 1.x Counterstrike and UT, and it really doesn't happen unless you're autistic and thinking you're hot shit debriefing the situation, or someone with above average skill playing serious tryhard games - which the vast majority of the matches in any game won't be, as you're already self-selecting and filtering yourself into a higher, much smaller subset of players.
The vast majority of your player base in any competitive game are going to be those forever woods, bronzes, and silvers, who are not playing with friends or in a clan and just queue up for the next ranked game right after finishing the previous one. They're not going to autism over sightlines or shit like that, but you're still going to want to have something to keep them playing too to keep the lights on in the office.
