Marathon is about losing all your gear but still having a great time because you 'come out with a good story'

There are like 3 games in the whole history of videogames with an interesting enough story i actually cared for.

Somehow i don't think this corpo shooter is going to be the fourth.

Well the idea sounds good on paper. I suspect many people to dismiss the game just from their first impression looking at the artstyle, though.
Most definitely lacking the visual flair of a Bungie game and the original reveal trailer. Mostly talking about environments.

Not showing off anything controller or its interface was….aggravating

If they get Destiny success Marathon will be in fantastic shape.

Extraction shooters by definition are a hardcore experience. You're in it to win it.

No one walks away from a losing streak, losing all your gear and loot and says "hey at least I have anecdotes for my group chat".
When I've played EFT I've had some bad runs back to back to back and when you start seeing your gear dwindle it makes you not want to play. It forces you to play like a pussy not taking encounters.

It's stressful. Hopefully their free loadout from the sponsor thing offsets some of this so you're willing to go.

Just about any game would love Destinys success

This wont sniff that that level of success though
I agree. I am guessing moderate success but I am banking on Bungie's fun gunplay to keep some people engaged. However, if they go down the money/no reward for time trap it's over. Nobody wants to play a game for hours with nothing to show for it.

I really hope they have some sort of open beta to give people a taste of maybe 1 map as I do really want to see how it feels

That said I don't really care for what I have seen and heard to this point so I wont throw them money just to try it

Maybe the real treasure was the stories we made along the way!....yeah I can't believe the game has really no exciting selling point. Man I feel sad seeing what's become of bungie, from halo 3 and reach to this😶

So it's like a million other FPS like Halo where the match is self-contained, you die and lose everything you're carrying. Thus the point of every Halo match is the "story" of that match, therefore "Halo moments". Now you can find money/things and use them in the game before it's over.

Feeling a need to point out this difference from Destiny by bringing it up months in advance framing it as "you get nothing! you make your own story!" isn't very smart, it's misled defensiveness and utter stupidity. They could have said "the loot system is a little closer to Halo" or just nothing at all.

I'm not trying to defend the game, it's meh and they're adding meh on top with dumbass posturing.

I'm starting to get worried. No hook, and this sounds like a pretty generic excuse for the lack of it. What the innovation that justifies this games existence next to a game like tarkov? I still don't see it.

I guess this GaaS game was too far into development for Sony to pull the plug.
I think Joe Ziegler was brought in to get this mess out the door. It clearly needs another year or two of development.

All the feedback Bungie is listening to are borderline aesthetic in nature. This is a house built on quicksand with a cracked foundation and a wall missing and Bungie seems to be going around fixing the small stuff with a punch list.

I predict this game settles with a relatively small player base (10k - 20k average CCU) and the Marathon team is quickly split up to work on something new, or to aid in Destiny 3. I wouldn't be shocked if a small 50 - 100 person skeleton crew is left on Marathon to see what it can do over the next few years if they keep working on it.

Is Bungie hoping people will play Marathon runs like Strikes. 20 mins event where you kill anything that moves, do public events and gtfo.
But only 5/10 times you might come across another player team that will get you the actual extraction shooter high.

This was the only way they could think of casual-fy the extraction shooter genre. 6 months reset even in Escape from Tarkov sounds annoying and Destiny players just won't have it.
Game needs to be way more Apex Predatory to have moment to moment fun.

Actually a decent answer imo, doesn't make me want to play it anymore, and won't change my mind on extraction shooters, or bungie. But a large part of the lasting appeal to Destiny, even though it was a terrible game. Was building fun memories and storys with bros. Like clutch moments in pvp, or hero moments in raids, where you are the last guardian standing and barely finish the encounter. Those moments made the game, not the gay story, or the loot, or even the gunplay. It's those 'hero' moments with your friends.

Some developers have this weird, idealized view that their player base will engage in some deep meta discussion about the match that just happened and that just generates "value" into the gameplay, when the reality is that no one cares go agane.

For me it just betrays a complete lack of depth in the gameplay and formula itself, if you have to try to portray your game's depth as some intangible discussions and anecdotes that the devs feel like are supposed to be happening after matches.
Are you serious, lol? This is literally what happens during and after any multiplayer match if you play with friends, or happen to watch any streamers. After a close loss you and you friends can discuss what mistakes you made or what you could have done differently to change the outcome. If you had a close win, vice versa. This goes on in forum discussions, places like Discord and reddit. For game modes that have a limited respawn system like Battle Royale or Extraction, the margin of error is much smaller, so any information you can get or pass along that can help you or teammates is paramount. Its less important on traditional game modes like Team Death match because you can run a around with reckless abandon knowing that you can respawn and try a new weapon, attachment or take a different path.

In the other marathon thread there were a video from gamespot or something saying theres really no story so far, and the game being set for september (?), it seems pretty worrying, unless they are keeping all the cards for themselves
They tried this before when Destiny 1 launched. "They kept everything hidden so we could discover it all for ourselves!". Turns out, they showed off everything in the game except the raid.
They tried this again when Destiny 2 launched. "They kept everything hidden so we could discover it all for ourselves!". Turns out, they showed off everything in the game except the raid.
If you've watched the gameplay videos, you've seen everything that Marathon is offering. According to Bungie, the "story" will be unlocked by grinding reputation with the three factions. The factions aren't NPCs, they're boxes in the menu with logos on them. This then consists of cards that you can read once unlocked, from which you can piece together the lore. This progress is then re-set each season (every three months) so you can do new grinds to unlock more "story". If that sounds a lot like Destiny 1's abysmal Grimoire Cards, that's because it is - except now you can read them in the game.

I've "played pvp" in multiple fps games ever since 1.x Counterstrike and UT, and it really doesn't happen unless you're autistic and thinking you're hot shit debriefing the situation, or someone with above average skill playing serious tryhard games - which the vast majority of the matches in any game won't be, as you're already self-selecting and filtering yourself into a higher, much smaller subset of players.

The vast majority of your player base in any competitive game are going to be those forever woods, bronzes, and silvers, who are not playing with friends or in a clan and just queue up for the next ranked game right after finishing the previous one. They're not going to autism over sightlines or shit like that, but you're still going to want to have something to keep them playing too to keep the lights on in the office.

Game Director: "every time you [play Marathon] you should expect to come out with a good story."

Gameplay Reveal and Gameplay Overview trailers:
  • Aren't telling a story
  • Are quickly cutting through gameplay
  • Third-person narrator explains gameplay mechanics, is not telling a story
Good job (y)

I think in Skillups hands on video, he was told they haven't even written the story yet, and it's only 6 months from release. Sounds like a Destiny situation to me.

Bungie isn't talking about the game's story tho

Didn't the person with the original vision within bungie for marathon and the extration shooter design not get fired ? Like they lost the lead once or twice, so no wonder they have lack of confidence in its final design. That could be its downfall, the committee of its design.

You are referring to the lore and narrative backstory. The game director and I are referring to the anecdotes and stories that players create themselves while playing the game, such as: "I was chasing this player through hallways and suddenly 5 of his friends showed up doing dance emojis and throwing grenades at me. Haha I died, but what a story!"

Player-generated story anecdotes are not being shown in the Gameplay Reveal nor in the Gameplay Overview, but are supposedly a pillar of the game experience according to the game director.

In contrast to the Escape from Tarkov trailer, which tells the story of two groups of players running into each other in a crowded hallway, with one player pretending to be dead to surprise the enemy, and other such anecdotes.

Yeah, people love wild and funny moments in multiplayer games.

In case you havent noticed, every on online FPS game has turned into sweat lobbies, due to the proliferation of social media, crossplatform lobbies and the ability to earn revenue from streaming. Anyone who spends any considerable amount of time playing a competitive online game is a try hard. Casual online gaming died a long time ago. The forever wood, brozne and silver players just arent that good, but that doesnt mean they wont have any discussions about their experience when they're having fun. Having post match discusion about your game casual or not has been the norm for the past decade.
