Excalibur (1981) only gets better with age

I bought this last night on prime as a result of this thread.

Gonna load this one up today.
About all I remember from dragonslayer is that one chick getting eaten by the babies and a discovery that I kinda like tomboys, further reinforced by Jo from Facrs of Life and Joyce Hysers magnificent flashing scene from Just one of the Guys. Of course this was back when these were WOMEN.

Come on, i aint gonna put THAT scene on Gaf, yah perv!!!

I like that every one is in shiny armor and they just put every stage light they good on them.

I remember seeing this the first time. It was background noise on some channel during the day as I was doing other chores. But the more the movie went on the more sucked in I got. Halfway through I was hooked and the finale left a long and lasting impression on me. It's so expressive. You don't see that in movies nowadays, that persistent "magic" that permeates every scene.

Fun fact; this is Zack Snyder's favorite film. And Batman v Superman draws heavy references from this film and Arthurian legend. The creation of Doomsday plays more into a Mordred angle of the manifestation of guilt and sin for one.

Watched it last year (got the bluray for cheap off Amazon at the time), absolutely loved it.

That actor for Merlin stole the whole damn movie. And lol, didn't expect Patrick Stewart in that one bit role.

The final scene at Camlann between Mordred and Arthur lives rent free in my head (even if not accurate to the actual myth [Arthur had a spear instead of Excalibur, and Fate runs with that version], it was a damn good scene). "Come, Father. Let us embrace at last."

Amen.

And man, when you go back and look at that cast. As a kid, I didn't know any of them, but now... so many of them went on to become big stars.

I was 10 when it came out. There is a scene of incest late into it, and it's a little on the violent side. But its context is so fixed on the fantasy, that it didn't jog me as a kid.

Theres a scene 5 or 10 minutes in where uther pendragon sneaks into his rival's castle and fucks his wife.

Also, some pretty gnarly imagery during the grail quest! Its a solid early 80's R-rated movie.

But again, there's nothing gratuitous in there that isn't part of the legend. Its just not sanitized for "modern audiences" !

If you have the kiddoes, this forgotten Disney jewel (and one of my top picks for a new series if they stick to the books)

I must have watched this movie a zillion times as a kid. Def got me into the shining force series when I saw the genesis banger "Shining in the Darkness" the art on the case made me think the game was connected to the movie...anyway...its awesome and highly recommended!!

Excalibur was one of those movies that I got to watch WAY too early as a kid. Great movie

What did you like or not like about the film?

It is probably pretty slow compared to modern films so I can see you feeling let down.
I didn't finish it but it was very cringe. I watched up until the bridge fight with lancelot. The battles are fake as can be. When merlin talks he does it in a half Shakespeare half dufus way. I thought he was on the verge of singing some of his lines. It felt like a episode of the old TV show wishbone where the dog became a history figure. Mixed with some nudity.

Re-watched it just recently.

The one thing I didn't quite consciously recognize as a kid--but which always gave me the strange unnatural feeling of this film--is that every line is dubbed. It's such a weird choice.

Instead of natural audio, the actors are recording their lines into mics while watching the filmed scene. You can tell... it's so disjointed feeling, almost like everyone is thinking in their heads in some shared telepathic space instead of actually speaking in the room. Particularly noticeable with Merlin, but almost every single scene uses it heavily.

First time I've seen Nicol Williamson's performance described as half Shakespeare, half dufus.
I think the art direction of the film is meant to look theatrical, it's a conscious decision.

The film certainly does influenced a fair share of creatives...

How has no one mentioned Ator the fighting eagle!

Even mst3k did an episode on it.
We have not even scratched the surface of 80s genre films!

Saw Ator in theater, pretty sure, as that was back when parents would just drop us off at the cinema and ANY PG film was fair game. Plus cinemas were connected more with malls back then so as we got older we would spend HOURS there. Throw in matinee and generally much longer theatrical runs and it's amazing how many of these flicks could be seen in theater by a kid.

That commercial is better than the movie. I should of just watched that and saved 12.99 🤣

Excellent movie. Now without it's flaws(Some even glaring) but rises above them and is easily the best movie attempt at adapting King Arthur to film. I mean it's either this or Monty Python. Take your pick. ;)

Here's something that might be interesting

The theatrical trailer has a couple deleted shots and at the 30-31 sec mark there's some monster faced guy (It doesn't appear to be an in-universe mask). I've heard this is repurposed Orc make-up from when this project was still going to be a LotR movie(And supposedly all the armour was intended to be Orc armour, hence being so over the top in design). This movie has a ton of deleted footage so I'm curious if this guy was ever part of anything or just an extraneous close-up of a crowd filler.

DeceptiveAlarm DeceptiveAlarm Slowed down a little but Arthur has sacrificed his own love and faithfulness to allow the life of Lancelot to continue. Knowing full well he will be betrayed by him.

Arthur really is a sympathetic figure. If you have read the once and future king series Arthur knows he is betrayed, but never acts against them and never hates them for it. He accepts it and rules anyway.

I get why someone might like this but it's just not for me. I did see the knighted seen but it all feels like cheese to me. The movie plays like a Monty Python movie but it's not trying to be funny. I just re watched the BBC Merlin TV show. I love Arthur stories but this one is not my thing. Lol.

Have you read the once and future king series? You would enjoy it.
