Final Fantasy 16 Extremely Underperformed On PC; Sold Only 289K Units Since Launch

It's a combination of it being a fairly weak Final Fantasy game (should have been a "Gaiden" game, imho. Like Stranger of Paradise was) and the temporary console exclusivity and the fairly weak marketing push when they launched it on PC.
I agree it should have been a spinoff, and someone give Yoshi-P an editor FFS. There's an incredible 25 hour long action game there with about 50 hours of open world bloat, pointless plot deviations, and awful side quests tacked on.

It's a game with a 10 out of 10 potential but a 5 out of 10 realization of that potential. Every aspect of the game is flawed in some way. The most dissappointing thing is that it if they just had fixed most of the half-baked things, it could have been great. I've been writing down my feelings on it for the past month as I try to digest where everything went wrong. To give you a summary of the changes that would be needed to take this mediocre experience to a great one would take pages, and I'm not prepared at the moment. I am not exaggerating when I say that every system from character design to storytelling to the battle system, to simple interface and movement mechanics, is fundamentally flawed from the outset, usually due to high-level design choices.

It's a very intriguing game to me, because its missteps and sometimes full on detours with unwanted and unnecessary features are so obvious that I have to blame the design document or the director for not caring how everything gelled together from a player experience. It's almost like whoever was giving approval never experienced the game as a contiguous whole, but just approved small segments as they were produced.

Ironically SoP is a better FF game and action game then FF16 ever will be.
Stranger of Paradise is my Final Fantasy 16 (or Final Fantasy 1: Remake, depending on how you want to look at it). It's awesome.

I enjoyed FF16 immensely, but have the same criticisms as everyone else.

The best part of FF16 is Clive himself. But the other cast members leave something to be desired. They’re not bad, just not as good as they need to be (albeit Benedikta is my bae for life).

Awesome game, but shoulda stayed PS exclusive and put the porting money into making that version even better and marketing it.

replayed it in Story Mode on PS5 Pro (about... 30 hours, maybe), and I still like it 🤷‍♂️
but the first time I played it, the sidequests broke too much of the pacing.

Could say the same for Rebirth, it's a SE problem, they lost their mojo a long time ago and seems like Atlus found it by the same time.

These people are stupid they act like gaming operates in a vacuum. They release the game on consoles and wait over a year for pc releases. Anyone who was really interested in the game probably played it already on console as most people own more than one system. Than they release on pc and expect console like numbers!

Now if they released it day and date with consoles the console sales would be down significantly as pc gamers would choose that!

They simply want double dips and that isn’t a big enough market for that game.

Im about half way through and im really struggling to finish it. Clive is cool but the story feels like it fell off and im just going through the motions now.
It just feels--- bland?

Once I found out about the performance issues with the game I just decided to wait for it to drop in price and then I will get a better performing version of the game for less money. Still interested in the game but definitely busy enough with plenty of other titles even outside of my massive backlog.

Got this game day 1 on steam and got a refund after an hour of experiencing the horrible optimization of graphics. we’re talking sub 30 fps on an I9 with an rtx 3090 at 1080p. Like that level of bad. Doubt that it was all because of denuvo. Likely SE couldnt care less to optimize the game properly and just wanted to make a quick buck.

Also, japanese devs tend to be bad at PC optimization. Don’t ask me why, I’m just calling it as I see it.

Seriously what is it with everyone acting like the thing hold games back from selling is not being multiplat? We've been watching multiplat games fail for decades now.
A combination of Xbro idiots pushing their agenda and PCMR who can't cope with the fact that their platform doesn't automatically give a 100% sales boost to every game.

FF16 released on the two relevant, major platforms that it could technically run on. Its mediocre sales are entirely due to it being a mediocre game. The entire franchise has been lost since the PS2 days. It's not any more complicated than that.

Removing Denuvo from any game should universally be labelled a Quality of Life patch.
I'm curious to see performance metrics. I'll bet you there's at least a slight improvement, and potentially a notable one, and Denuvo apologists will overlook it and keep saying that Denuvo is necessary to fight piracy and that it doesn't hurt performance in any noticeable manner. That line of bullshit is always on time.

full priced games released years later sell catalog numbers, not launch numbers. those aren't bad catalog numbers.
I take it you won't be buying GTAVI on PC at full price then?

It'll be "old" by the time it comes to PC.

Please tell me you'll pirate it. That's exactly why PC doesn't get GTA day and date to begin with. If that isn't the reason, why do you think it is? Please tell me you have a theory.

I mean, it's not the only factor, and being multiplat isn't a guarantee of sales. But launching to a bigger audience definitely helps.
And there's a BIG difference between launching on day 1 when the hype is there, the fomo is there, the inflated review scores are there and the generally positive early impressions are there vs trying to launch at or near full price 1 year later after the hype has died down, the fomo is gone and opinions about the game have become more critical.
That's specially true for a mediocre game like FFXVI

And yeah there's exceptions like GTA and very high regarded games/franchises that will do incredibly well even with late ports. But FFXVI isn't such a game.

One thing is clear: the Japanese must not try to copy the West.

Final Fantasy has to go back to its roots and feature a fantastical world that makes you dream, with a team that you care about. Now, I know there's a debate between ATB and turn-based, but Baldur's Gate 3 has shown that you can make a callback by doing something that isn't aimed at the general public and still be a big hit.

Make a game with Amano's art in motion and I'll be the happiest man alive!

1 year later, full price and somewhat heavy systems requirements. I don't know what they are expecting.

Squenix and their usual sales forecast...

The days of FF selling 10m+ copies within it's first year are probably over.

However, releasing their games on as many platforms as possible on D1 will certainly help them shift units over time. From a raw sales POV, their games are still some of the best selling JRPGs out there, even if their ever increasing production budgets eat into a lot of their revenue.

I heard they patched those issues.

Plays really well at steady 60 FPS on my 4070 Ti Super and at 4K with DLSS on Balanced/Quality.

Maybe give it another go?

The game sold bad because XV damaged the brand by releasing a half finished game, i have a soft spot for XV because whats left of Versus 13 shows it could have been a great game but man the average joe didn't think it was any good and thought the later half was trash (especially chapter 13) 7 Remake had nostalgia and came out during COVID lockdowns and still couldn't match XV's sales.

You could have paid Maximillian for 20 more videos, and had Ben Starr do the rounds on every podcast known to man again.
Yeah, I didn't love that they were attaching that max dudes name so much with the game and I believe they could've been smarter w the marketing. That said, SE stated FFXVI did better than previous entries with younger audiences so hopefully the next one is poised to do well if they stay focused.

I'd like to see FF14 turn an expansion pack into a full game (considering how large they are and how much content they pack) with a turn based system and see what happens

Because of morons like me who triple dipped. 360 > PS4> PC.

It's for money.
