do you guys think music still leaks out in the same magnitude that it did say...2-3 years ago? I feel like there were always hot exclusive tracks, leftover tracks, single verses, unfinished songs, tags on tags. y'all remember those limelight exclusive mixtapes? dudes consistently put out 10-14 track tapes with ALL exclusives. We also had that run on Drake mixtapes which was all leftovers, unfinished songs and reference tracks from 2009-2013.

maybe artists are just keeping their circle smaller, behind more encrypted places or hackers are just giving up on trying to dig them up.
I'm not sure about individual leaks. But I can't think of any album that really makes it to an announced release date without leaking. I remember being shocked that Watch the Throne didn't leak at all. Surprise dates definitely help avoid that.

Don't forget too that Young Thug had like 70+ songs leak this year.

I can understand arguing he never made a great solo, but to say Busta doesn't have a good solo? ehhhhh

Uncontrolled Substances was good, but yeah, we didn't get that Iron Man/Liquid Swords...lost in the great flood

The Coming & When Disaster Strikes...getting slept on, ill ride for like half of ELE too

Also, Busta has incredible videos

Busta & Missy got high spots on that list for sure

I wrote for a music blog around the time WTT was releasing and the rumors were it has been in the hands of hackers and other people for weeks before release but nobody put it out. The night before the WTT release (I had a BlackBerry) an editor for a certain website (I won't mention who or where) sent me a voice recording over BBM of a full unreleased WTT track he got played at one of the engineers houses. shit was bonkers. I had it on repeat all the way up until the CDQ hit.

Drakes 'Dreams Money Can Buy' was floating around too at the same time before it leaked out. There was even that Kanye West 'Mamas Boyfriend' acapella that was layered on a fake instrumental being shopped around. nobody was suppose to leak it but then of course they did. J Coles 'Lost Ones', some unreleased Cudi. shit was booming those couple of years

the norm nowadays is at 3-4 days before release it'll leak out. this is usually when the shipments are hitting stores or mom and pop record shops accidentally stock them too early

It would've been logical to put it on beats1 but it is looking like you'll need an account...

not really a big deal considering it's a free 3 month trial. i'm hyped for this. having some wine and have doggystyle bumping in the background. broke out my studio reference speakers to listen to this on. it's going to be a west coast party all evening at my place. have a bunch of people coming over to drink and listen to the stream. everyone seems down on it, but i'm thinking it's going to be a dope album.

The Morning is probably Weeknds best song. So good.

Kind of surpassing to see Earned it and Often are on his album.

Wicked Games and The Morning are tied for my top track on HoB. Loft Music, The Party & The After Party might be contenders as well.

Thursday had hits too. The Zone, The Birds part 1&2, Rolling Stone, Thursday

Echoes of Silence. DD, Outside, Initation, Same Old Song, Next, The Fall

Great MC's who never made a good solo:

1. Inspectah Deck
2. Busta Rhymes

Who else?

wat. The Coming & When Disaster Strikes are definitely above good. He has other good albums too. Deck has Resident Patient & Uncontrollable Substance... not classics but they're definitely good (though if someone doesn't like em then i can understand).

so the dj on beats 1 just said that you will need to go into the 'connect' feature of apple music in order to access the stream of 'compton'. just in case anyone was as confused as i was about where to actually here the stream inside of the service.

Thanks bruh.

In other news, the Warren G is absolute trash.

You guys think there will be ever something like the Wu ever again? A bunch of hungry youngsters trying to take over the world and dropping classics on their way to the top like it's nothing? Or is today's industry built around the solo artist?

It totally can, but it has to be a bunch of people doing their own thing and not looking at how to engage and sell existing fan bases. Maybe New York or Oakland will have a renaissance one day.

I think so. I mean, as much as we joke about Odd Future, they had a pretty good shot of being something like that. Same with ASAP mob. They didn't and it's like...maybe it's better they didn't in retrospect. But there was a point where the idea of it had folks excited.

Even TDE coulda done with each doing a solo and a black hippy album.

i'm listening to 'compton' right now. found a link and it works in itunes. listening to intro. it's some crazy futuristic trap shit mixed with r&b. dude keeps singing "one thing i do know" during the hook.

Not on the same level. I feel like we're in a totally different world now.

You gotta go back to '93. LA gangsta rap is running the airwaves. NY's biggest dude was an 80s OG in Big Daddy Kane. Then, out of fuckin nowhere, a big of all-star rappers show up with masks covering their faces on the cover, blasting a totally different sound. Out with the Chronic synths and P-funk samples, in with grimy drum loops and out of tune pianos, niggas in hoodies shooting videos in bad weather and fucked up stairwells. They created a whole mythology around their various aliases intermingling with their various pop culture references. It put New York City on the map. Only after 36 chambers do you get Illmatic and Ready to Die and Reasonable Doubt and Hard to Earn and The Infamous.

Then you have to remember this is an era that wasn't so splintered out, and people actually bought records. RZA crazy ass actually allowed all the group members to sign with different record labels. Tidal for Def Jam, ON4CL on Loud, Liquid Swords with Geffer, Ironman on Epic, etc. They were all been promoted by all these labels, each of them selling millions and millions of copies.

Now I mean...we got all the region sounds, we know all the unknowns cuz Des posts their bandcamps/soundclouds when they show up, nobody buys CDs they just stream shit on Spotify. The growth of the internet, how people discover and acquire music, and the evolution of the rap genre prevents a Wu Tang clan impact and influence from ever happening again.

I'm skeptical you even get a bunch of unknowns together with a genius producer with a new sound in 2015. TDE/Good Music can't even get their fuckin' star solo artists right.

This is a young genre, so I definitely can see it. The very nature of hip-hop definitely lends itself to the "come up" with your people, so we'll never be too far away from that type of story imo. Of course talent will always be king though (man, Black Hippy really is kinda tragic when you think about them as a collective...I mean... =().

You'd think apple would have solved such streaming problems. Blizzard eventually got it, Apple has had more than enough time.
