It's a very common practice. Why this story is getting so much attention baffles me. I guess it is the first paper confirmation of the Nintendo Ninja force.
I think some are just on a short fuse with Nintendo right now-Smash controversy, Etika Joy-Cons, perception of a bad 2020 release schedule, limited releases, and "lazy" ports/emulation collections.

A lot of people don't seem to understand that Nintendo often takes these actions to protect their IP and distance themselves from potential PR problems that come from the online community (we all saw what happened with Smash sexual assault accusations this summer). Nintendo is a toy company and they don't want to see their IP become associated with more adult themes...I don't think a lot of the fans understand that perspective.

Plenty of things Nintendo could do better (online, VC) but people seem to put their energy into getting upset about the wrong things like this situation. When fans do push back on Nintendo its more of a temper tantrum and less of an attempt at dialogue. Haven't seen fans really do anything impressive since Operation Rainfall. It's a shame because people could put all of that energy into something more constructive.

So apparently someone is trying to get digital versions of the 3 real Zelda games to be released. Inside leak from VGZ.

I'm actually curious how that would work, yeah they are Nintendo Ips but I guess you would need Philips permission to use their code, music, and graphics. Also you'd probably need to emulate the CD-i which would also need permission although I hear that CD-i players are public devices now from someone years ago, not sure if that's true.

The guy working on these did an interview with eurogamer over a month ago lol

What in the world are you talking about? Nintendo is not going to facilitate a re-release of those titles in any capacity.

The strategy for Western publishers seems to be "release on PS/XB first, then port to Switch later". I think the Prince of Persia, Mass Effect and Tony Hawk remakes are all coming to Switch.
Hoping for an early 2021 release.

I can't see Nintendo ever allowing those games to be released.

Eh, I'd buy a Mass Effect trilogy for the Switch. There's a lot of 360/PS3 games I would like to revisit in portable form.

That's not what I'm talking about at al

That's not really how this works, like how Activision can't stop Sony from re-releasing digital emulated PSX Crash games on their digital store. technically, if you get Phillips permission for the games and the emulator, they can re-release the emulators at charge as long as they reference the IP ownership, Nintendo actually can't do anything to stop a potential re-release on steam for example. they can stoop releases on Switch and influence Sony and MS not to touch them, plus it would be a cheap small project so it would only end up on Steam anyway.

With that being said, I don't think it's going to happen, not much demand for these games, people who want money off them will sell the original games along with CD-i players for profits. It's likely end up with less traffic than the Steam Bubsy collection and not because the the games are bad (though faces of evil isn't really "terrible" per say) but because nearly no one knows what they are and the games look and play differently from other Zelda games (well maybe not too far from Zelda 2 in some aspects.)

Also Phillips hasn't let people touch CD-i hardware since the end of the 90's the only thing they let out was the disc format (which indeed was and still is impressive) which is public use and some of the software for software development could transfer to DVD since CD-i is the predecessor to that format. But almost everything else Phillips has thrown in the dungeon and ate the key.

But it would be interesting if they manage to pull it off though. Not that anyone is begging for these games, but it would be a novelty I suppose.

Yeah but what does he think of Sony though?

He thinks with Sony alienating mid to smaller sized Japanese Developers and Japan in general, and with the recent exodus of developers from Japan Studio, that Sony is dead in Japan. He also feels that Game Pass and streaming is not the future, it is THE PRESENT and that GamePass and XCloud, together with all Japanese developers flocking to Nintendo will deal a fatal blow to Sony and that they will die an agonizing death.

He's also laughing at the fact that Sony is investing in movies and TV series based on their IPs and says that they are bound to flop. Sony Pictures hasn't made anything good in years and Monster Hunter is bound to flop and make Sony lose lots of money. In his own words "Who wants to watch fucking Kratos or Nate?"

He's hoping that Nintendo buys out Capcom, and Microsoft buys out Square Enix and Sega so that Sony would be left with nothing.

He also feels that Sony's movie games aren't worth playing. "Just watch it on Youtube, or wait for it to release on PC and then pirate them." he laughs.

He's pirated both Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding and bashed the hell out of both of them.

I'd rather Nintendo buys/invests in Konami. Considering majority of Konami's late console games seem like tailor-made for Switch, and sell best there anyway.

Also, I'd love to see meltdowns all around if Konami's console games became exclusive to Nintendo.

Imagine a proper sequel to Suikoden 5, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania and Silent Hill all exclusive on the Switch! Anyway the reason why my friend wants Nintendo to buy out Capcom so bad is because of the Monster Hunter series. He believes that game should be played handheld. He was disappointed that MHW sold so well and was worried that Capcom would leave money on the table by not making a Monster Hunter game on the Switch.

Video games are such a small part of Konami's business that it's not worth Nintendo buying them. Plus, Switch will be the main platform that Konami supports for the next few years anyway.

People forget Monster Hunters growth and success originally came out of Sony's hardware, the PSP. What's funny is that the cultural impact of the series in Japan never was as significant when they moved MH to Nintendo hardware, until MHW came out on PS4, another gaming system by Sony.

Nintendo buy out causing exclusivity would shutter the reach and sales potential of the series while slowly dying in relevant each entry. A similar cycle when people wanted Nintendo to buy Sega for Sonic despite the best selling Sonic titles not being on Nintendo systems despite all those Nintendo Sonic releases.

If Nintendo should buy any company, it should be Level-5. Most of their existence is owned to Nintendo hardware.

MHW came out on most platforms, not PS4 exclusively, and first time WW release.

MH got big on PSP, and on 3DS the sales were only getting bigger significantly (8 mil for every 2 year period) especially given the install base - having MH on Vita will only make the series flop. The curtural impact is basically playing local coop MonHun on handhelds, not the traditional MHW experience.

MH Rise will paint the same yet different tone too. We'll see how the sales goes with this one.

If MH was on the Vita it would have moved 4 million units easily. Look at Purseowner 4 Golden. I have no idea how you think that having a spin off on a portable would make a IP the japanese people are obsessed with flop.

The initial install base is too small, only 5 millions sold on 2016 and the price is just expensive.

Capcom don't want to take chances, just like Pokemon Company. They need to sell their big games on a solid install base at least.

P4G is another story.

Your comment still makes no sense. Capcom supported the Vita and at worst they'd just be porting the 3DS version. It sold 1.8 on the 3DS and it sold like 600k DAY ONE on the PsP. (Freedom I believe) 3.5m by the end of its life.

What sold 1.8 something on 3ds? 3DS have already sold like 20 millions unit come 2016. Launching MH on 3DS is justified, having the series only on the system means not sabotaging the original platform install base for local coop feature.

Then again PSP have way way bigger install base launch wise compared to Vita.
