IGN:Good lord this is the worst list of TGA's GOTY nominees ever.

Have a look at this:

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Dragon's Dogma 2
Tekken 8
Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Persona 3 Reload
Helldivers II
Earth Defense Force 6
Balatro
Pacific Drive
FF7 Rebirth
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Unicorn Overlord
Rise of the Ronin
Stellar Blade
FF7: Rebirth
Nine Sols
Selaco
Manor Lords
ER: Shadow of the Erdtree
Black Myth Wukong
Space Marine 2
Visions of Mana
Astro Bot
UFO 50
Ys X: Nordics
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Metaphor ReFantazio
Dragonball Sparking Zero
Metro VR

All released in 2024, there are probably more I'm forgetting about. If this is a shit year then I wish we had more of those.
That looks like a fine year to my eyes. Absolutely nothing to complain about.

Western was a total trash. Japanese games was great.

They are crying only because Wokung got a nomination. Cry more IGN.

GOTY awards should not be held in the same year as the games being considered...
GOTY 2024 should be an event in January 2025... and so on.

Well if IGN, the guys behind Veilgard hyper score, feels like this is the worst, then perhaps the list its pretty good.

So weird that people think it was a bad year. I have played games non stop and my backlog keeps growing.

Astro Bot
Like a Dragon
Final Fantasy VII
Metaphor
Unicorn Overlord
Ys X
Shin Megami Tensei V
Rise of the Ronin
Dragon's Dogma II

...and that was only on PS5. I played stuff on PC and Switch too.

It was an insanely good year.

2024 has been a fine year for gaming. Are people thinking this because we're right off the shoulders of 2023, one of the best years in gaming ever? Did people forget how dogshit 2021 was? It's normal to see rotations of good years and bad years. Games take way longer to make now.

Astro Bot, FFVII: Rebirth, and Metaphor are amazing games that sit in the low to mids 90s on MC. Gamers loved them. They all equally deserve GOTY. What is the fucking problem here? People need to put their expectations in check.

This year has been *amazing* if you step outside the western AAA bubble that these media folks seem to live in. (and PoE2 early access is launching in like 2 weeks)

I guess the direct or indirect crying for Vailguard will continue untill this sites start to throw their own awards at that woke fest dogshit.

His similar to Men_in_Boxes, he doesn't care about if game is fun or not he mostly care about "market" behind the games.
I'm still hardly convinced those 2 actually enjoy or play video games. Would be better off suited in a sales talk forum than a forum for the discussion of games.

Investors have no place in gaming forums. Or IMHO, gaming altogether.

Here is a proper list of bangers:

1. Erdtree
2. SH2
3. Wukong
4. Metaphor
5. Belatro
6. Astrobot
7. Rebirth

IGN is mad at 4 things:

1. No Veilguard - rare incel victory
2. Erdtree listed - our opinions are diverse
3. No SH2 - we sad!
4. Monke - we happy!

So as you can see they are actually just upset at our rare incel victory.

Honestly, how can you look at this list of games and be sad, they are great:

1. Erdtree
2. SH2
3. Wukong
4. Metaphor
5. Belatro
6. Astrobot
7. Rebirth

You probably just aren't playing the games if you think this year was shit. The list of must buy games this year is a mile long. If you complain about that list, how fucking rich are you to be buying all these games. I buy like 20-30 this year at or near full price because there were just too many day 1s. Have you not heard of Unicorn Overlord or Infinite Wealth? Sweet summer child you do not know what a shit year is.

I just feel like there are a lot of quality releases that could have been replaced with the Elden Ring DLC.

This year wasn't the greatest but did have a lot of hidden gems and quality games if you didn't just expect the usual.

Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth got absolutely fucking robbed yet again, just like LaD7 got robbed back in 2020. Both are absolutely phenomenal games and I loved them

I think that without one or two big critically acclaimed tentpole titles, lots of people just don't think it is a good year.

I also think the people who think that probably play like 5-10 games a year max.

This year has a super deep bench, but few tentpoles, so you get people who don't have that core memory for this year with the 5 games they played, since one of them was not BG3, and you get the misconception, misinformation, and intentional obtuseness.

This year's library is a deep bench. It doesn't have that one banger yall need but for many of us, one huge critically acclaimed game(even BG3) does not make or break the year.

If we used your scale, we could have a super shit year with no games, then BG3 release right before awards and everybody talking about best year ever.

I was watching a youtuber give his thoughts and it struck me that even he had only played either like 1 or 0 titles in each category. So most of us are not playing the games and a deep bench doesn't matter if we are not playing the games. Only the tentpoles matter.

What's funny is that this is sort of indirectly shitting on IGN and how irrelevant their scores are.
They scored: Astrobot 9/10 , Metaphor 9/10, Rebirth 9/10 , Wukong 8/10, Balatro 9/10, Elden Ring DLC 10/10
What does it say about IGN and their scores when "the worst list of nominees ever" has an average IGN score of 9/10?

Grade inflation?

Dragon Age Inquisition won before…

Is any game on the list not better than DA:I? I say no.

Rebirth and Metaphor are fucking great. Erdtree is an all time expansion. Astro is delightful, Balatro is addicting. Wukong was the smash hit of the year.

I disagree, but Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is missing (I place it ahead Metaphor and Rebirth, and I LOVE those two games).
I'm happy to see RPGs are delivering.
It was an AWESOME year, probably not so much if you aren't into RPGs, though.

Maybe the game awards should be in January.

Why is it not in January?
I've watched maybe a total of 45 minutes of the game awards over the past 10 years and not sure about the bureaucracy of it.
Yeah. Every year there are a handful of titles released in November and December. It's 2024 awards. They should include games released in those months. This year they will be omitting Dragon Age and Indiana Jones. DA did get a nomination for some small award but I don't think it was eligible for the main awards.

This makes me sad. A great game should be in the running. You are right though. :(

I love, love, love the series, but truth be told, I'm burnt out as well. I have a few Yakuza titles in my backlog (IW, Ishinn, Man Who Erased His Name, Lost Judgment) and every time I go to start one I think to myself, "well, Pirate Yakuza is right around the corner so I should just wait to play that." And with the frequency of releases, it's a never ending cycle.

It has not been a bad year at all. The games they chose for the category are questionable.

I'd have had:

Astrobot
Metaphor Refantazio
Final Fantasy Rebirth
Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth (Balatro)
Silent Hill 2 (Wu Kong)
Helldivers 2 (Fucking dlc)

Seems like they scrambled to try and get some western representation into the categories and also this must be in December to try and pump some last minute christmas sales hence 'having a cutoff for release dates'
I agree with all of that except Balatro. That is a GREAT game. Played that more than any other game including Like A Dragon, Wu Kong, FF7,Metaphor and Astrobot

Yeah, true. This is maybe the first year I don't really have a GOTY. Sure there were some good games I played this year but nothing truly great.

Western was a total trash. Japanese games was great.

They are crying only because Wokung got a nomination. Cry more IGN.

It's either that, or knowing how much of an Xbox fanboy Ryan is, he's trying to set up the narrative in case Astro Bot wins.

"Yeah it won, but it was an easy year" etc etc.

I feel bad for anyone convinced this was a bad year. The only thing truly bad was thr technical state of many games. In the 4th full year of the generation we should've got hardware defining current gen games, instead we got games like Rise of the Ronin, a Sony published ps5 exclusive that can't even run in Graphics mode at a solid framerate on the ps5 pro.

Good year for smaller AAA games and new studios. Extraordinarily bad year in gaming for big AAA games. Outlaws and Veilguard were massively dissapointing. There are like 10 huge games coming out next year comparably

Monster Hunter
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Assassins Creed
Doom
Fable
Death Stranding 2
Ghost of Yotei
GTA 6
Mafia 4
Bioshock 4
Marathon

And that is only what has been announced. Why couldn't some of that shit come out this year, damn
Unfortunately I don't think AA games will ever be elected GOTY. That's not how this circus works.

Few good games and exclusives, but still this year was save by exclusives and console exclusives of Sony like for example Stellar blade, FF7 rebirth, Astrobot, SH2 remake, HD 2, and Rise of Ronin. For third part multiplatform its Wukong, Metaphor, and I hope Stalker 2 will be a good game.

Poor years often have the best the following years and yeah I wouldn't nominate any game for game of the year 2024 especially after I loved 2023 (Jedi survivor, TOTK, Spider-Man 2).

Ryan is just mad Hellblade 2 is the only Xbox Game Studios developed game on that list and it did not make GOTY or Innovation in Accessibility.

Why, though. Who sets these cutoff days. It's still 2024 and that's fact. Put your damn awards in 2025 then so you can consider games that... well, came in 2024. Even if it's 31st December.
It's a PR event and publishers want a sales boost for the holidays.

I keep seeing people talk about how this was a down year, yet I think it blows 2023 out the water. I really can't recall an lull this year. Been great release after great release pretty much all year.

Y'all keep forgetting how dogshit 2021 was

FEVRYcVWUAMOnaO.jpg:large

That year genuinely struggled with proper GOTY candidates, while this year some nominees could even be replaced with games like Silent Hill 2, Stellar Blade, Zelda, Helldivers 2, Space Marines 2, Infinite Wealth, Dragon's Dogma 2, etc.
Jesus. Didn't remember this really at all but did remember 21 was a weaker year. But how in the fuck did returnal not make it that year?

Because 2 games from the same pub is a no no in their arbitrary rules. Which is why Helldivers 2 was snubbed with more noms than a DLC.

I think it's more because Helldivers 2 had a lot of controversy and wild swings in public opinion (which are still ongoing) due to missteps by the studio. I think it probably deserves a nom more than wukong, but I can understand the snub.

It had 5 nominations along with Silent Hill 2. Both are not there.

Still doesn't make sense though. Both horizon and GoW were nominated in 2022.
I stand corrected then.

Blasphemy that Banishers isnt nominated at all. One of the best I played all year, and it was a shit weak year for me personally. Bounced off of nearly all of the heavy hitters aside from Silent Hill 2.

Smells like IGN going "Hey I am part of you, guys, let's forget that little DA Veilguard review, huh? Gee, what a bad list that Jeffy guy has!"

yeah, no, IGN, kindly fk off to the corner, we don't have fish memory

I agree with what others are saying is it's not the games this year but the nominees chosen. A lot of the actual bangers this year were sleeper indie hits and not in the AAA-sphere. There have been better years though.
