IGN:Good lord this is the worst list of TGA's GOTY nominees ever.

Best year for the current gen so far. And top 5 are easily

Space Marine 2
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Stellar Blade
Wukong Black Myth
Granblue Fantasy Relink or some other choice here.

Have a look at this:

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Dragon's Dogma 2
Tekken 8
Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Persona 3 Reload
Helldivers II
Earth Defense Force 6
Balatro
Pacific Drive
FF7 Rebirth
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Unicorn Overlord
Rise of the Ronin
Stellar Blade
FF7: Rebirth
Nine Sols
Selaco
Manor Lords
ER: Shadow of the Erdtree
Black Myth Wukong
Space Marine 2
Visions of Mana
Astro Bot
UFO 50
Ys X: Nordics
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Metaphor ReFantazio
Dragonball Sparking Zero
Metro VR

All released in 2024, there are probably more I'm forgetting about. If this is a shit year then I wish we had more of those.
In fairness, it's really that we've been spoiled in recent years with a lot of incredible games in that top tier of GOTY contenders. This year ain't that, but it still has a lot of very good games.

Y'all keep forgetting how dogshit 2021 was

That year genuinely struggled with proper GOTY candidates, while this year some nominees could even be replaced with games like Silent Hill 2, Stellar Blade, Zelda, Helldivers 2, Space Marines 2, Infinite Wealth, Dragon's Dogma 2, etc.
oh god wow that is sad

Of course, he doesn't say what would have been a better list.

It is all about personal preferences. I look at that list and I also see a pretty kickass year. Others, not so much.
It is a good list. It also needs Indy, Stalker, Hellblade and MSFS. Those are massive games out this year.

Good year for smaller AAA games and new studios. Extraordinarily bad year in gaming for big AAA games. Outlaws and Veilguard were massively dissapointing. There are like 10 huge games coming out next year comparably

Monster Hunter
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Assassins Creed
Doom
Fable
Death Stranding 2
Ghost of Yotei
GTA 6
Mafia 4
Bioshock 4
Marathon

And that is only what has been announced. Why couldn't some of that shit come out this year, damn

Metroid Prime 4, how could you!

Why, though. Who sets these cutoff days. It's still 2024 and that's fact. Put your damn awards in 2025 then so you can consider games that... well, came in 2024. Even if it's 31st December.
doesnt matter anyways, they're both officially not good games....per reviews of course

I dont expect Indy to be a contender anyways either

How would you include Indy when it isn't out?
It's a game from XGS with a IP big name, from Machine Games coming out in 2024 and has been previewed well. I guess we could wait until December 09 and say "here is another big game that came out this year". 2025 is going to be big with GTA6, but it's not out yet.

Thought this was a great year. I guess if you were holding out for some great AAA western titles then you’d be disappointed, since we didn’t get many of those imo

What time is it?
Not sure which of those won but It Takes Two is a phenomenal game. Definitely the best out of that lot.

Beyond squirrels Street Fighting on a biplane, which was awesome, It Takes Two was mid. Tim Schaffer should have taken home the award.

I see a lot of mid games on that list. Very mid. You also put Rebirth on there twice.

It's not a shit year, but it is an average year.

An amazing year would be something like 1998, 2001 or 2004. Those are know as vintage years. 2024 is mid. Average. Run of the mill. Vanilla etc etc.

It wasn't a terrific year. But thankfully GTA 6 is out next year so even if next year sucks, GTA 6. Yes, I'm going to call it because why not?

We could get into the specifics, but at the bottom line is that none of those games inspire enthusiasm around gaming, which is at an all time low right now. The results speak for themselves. The vast majority of that list lost a nomination to DLC. DLC that wasn't groundbreaking.
That might not be what you are feeling. A lot of games did release this year (so unless someone needs something new/fresh on the daily, you should have had something to keep you busy). Perhaps it is your interest in gaming that has slightly faded? I still enjoy gaming for the most part, but it definitely isn't the same or I don't feel the same way I did during the PS3 gen.

Dude, by the way standards have dropped, 2014 would be a generation defining knockout.

Dark Souls 2
Watch Dogs
Bayonetta 2
Driveclub
Shovel Knight
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Shadow of Mordor
The Evil Within
Alien Isolation
Wolfenstein New Order
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
The Wolf Among Us
Forza Horizon 2
Far Cry 4
Transistor
Sunset Overdrive
Titanfall
Wasteland 2
Mario Kart 8
Child of Light
Destiny
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Super Smash Bros Wii U
Divinity: Original Sin

Blows this year out of the water.

It’s got AstroBot, which is easily GOTY, so it can’t be that bad.

Sure is

Douchebag total :pie_eyeroll:

Jesus, I never saw that tweet. What an asshat, lol.

IGN continues to be a very popular name unfortunately. Back then they were even more popular, so yeah, that dumb ass review score likely affected a number of sales. Plus it didn't look good to be coming from such a large name. So yeah RYAN, if it was different we may have gotten a sequel sooner! Lol.

What's supposed to be GOTY quality? I don't like narrative heavy hollywood filmic style third person action games often backed by super high budgets. The years where that's the best games are not good years for me. This year has been good for me. People love Balatro and Astro Bot. What's wrong with that? To me it feels like backlash from media members to nominations would be because of the lack of traffic those games would bring their sites. Balatro, unexpected indie success. Not able to take advantage of pre-release marketing hype and traditional games media isn't well suited for the kind of content that people engage with for games like Balatro, Helldivers 2, Palworld, etc. Checked sales estimates and Balatro maybe sold 2 million on Steam before adding in any other platforms.

FFVII Rebirth, not as popular as the industry had hoped but I bet if it sold over 15 million the media would be head over heels for 2024. Black Myth Wukong, not popular with traditional games media but popular in general but a developer that doesn't engage with western media much so not good for website content. Metaphor: ReFantazio beloved by gamers but I feel like ever since the 360 era Xbox Arcade, traditional western games media has no idea how to drive engage with articles on JRPGs. Most popular games, internet culture seems to graviate to indenpendant youtubers, twitch streamers, reddit, and tiktok. The only nominee that seemed beloved by traditional games media was FFVII Rebirth and that wasn't as popular as I bet they had hoped for their websites and it's practically the only JRPG that has production values and a marketing budget that give these sites/orgs traffic/funding to exist. Unfocused catch all video game media sites have struggled with being relevant with gamers since Starcraft 2 competitive broke out big and then Legaue of Legends as well as surprise indie hits mostly existing as word of mouth successes rather than IGN feature preview article. Then this year one of the biggest games being Zenless Zone Zero being obvious that it was going to be a hit but a kind of game IGN would have practically no cultural relevance in

When compared to the 2021 and average games like Deathloop, Resident Evil Village, and Psychonauts 2, it looks like a stellar line-up.

Rebirth, Metaphor, and Astro Bot shit all over those nominations.
