Lady Gaga ARTPOP |OT| It could mean anything

I find it hilarious that the first two singles have basically the same chord progression (in a different key), and most people don't even notice (they basically repeat I, II, iii, iii, II, I over and over and over). But then again, this is pop music, and this is Gaga. The chorus to Dope is the same I V vi IV progression that's featured in the chorus' of Papparazzi, Dance In the Dark, Hair, Edge of Glory, etc. It gets tiresome.

As an avid pop music fan, I can attest to not really caring about chord progressions. My main focus is melody.

All genres have commonplace structures (chords, hook placements, etc.) so this isn't something that's unique to pop music.

Plus, even though Gaga insistently uses tried and true pop structures, she shines through her hooks and melodies. She's no musical pioneer, but her affinity for a good pop hook is innovative and probably the best in the genre (aside from perhaps Katy Perry's songwriters, lol)

Have to skip J&D on every listen, utter garbage!

Sexxx Dreams and Fashion however, total bops.

Do What U Want and Artpop are completely fantastic chill songs.

Aura, G.U.Y., Swine and Mary Jane Holland are all excellent as well

You like Dope?

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
I'm surprised you like Venus but not GUY, since they're practically cut from the same cloth. Maybe the album will be a grower for you. The Fame Monster didn't click with me the first few times I listened to it, but afterwards it became a personal favorite. Sometimes it takes a while for a hook to seep its way to the forefront. lol

to be honest, you're right the album IS DEFINITELY growing on me more and more. Venus is my fave, but I've really come to like Fashion!, G.U.Y., Mary Jane Holland whereas before I didn't like them as much.... and I like Sexxx Dreams, Artpop, and a few others already

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING could get me to listen to Dope or J&D again, they've been deleted from my playlist. I hate them more than my previous "least favorite" Gaga song which use to be "You and I" UGH

Man, Fashion! would be so much better if it weren't for that "fashion for fashhhionnn" part at the end. What a boner killer ;_;

I've gotta be honest I don't think I'm ever going to like Fashion! or Jewels & Drugs. Both go for too long and don't grab me as much tbh

Anyone knows when this pops up on Spotify?

November 11th brah. Though a friend of mine saw it pop up there already, albeit not by the "official" uploader.

What I appreciate about Fashion! is that it lets the song breathe. So many songs just jump in, sprint through you, then leave without a moment's notice. Venus, Applause, J&D, Gypsy and ARTPOP were obviously produced in the express lane because they're so low on instrumental breaks. Fashion at least lets a hook rest for a bit and establishes a chord progression with much more ease. Granted, the hook and chords aren't quite as hard-hitting but I think the overall song works better in a technical sense than a lot of the others because of that.

Is Do What U Want doing poorly on the charts?

I love it and hope it's doing well :(

It got sent to the radio this tuesday, but it's debut on the hot 100 was 13 (due to sales and some radio stations playing it early). It's been falling on iTunes for a while, but theres been pretty much no US promo or music video.

So it should start doing better soon (hopefully)

I'm with you and you can add Dope to the list. I don't find myself skipping Fashion!, but I did skip J&D and Dope today. I'm not sure I'm all that fond of Gypsy either, tbh. I LOVE the album though and everything else is a masterpiece.

It went from 13 to 58, wth?!

Venus debuted at 32 in the latest charts this week

Just gave this whole thing a listen.
I honestly only like Applause. The rest I'm not feeling at ALL.

But I will give it another listen, I think I need to.

edit: No sorry, I liked G.U.Y. also.

The booklet for Australia is really shit though, I don't know why they seemed to simplify it's design. :/

Grrrr so jealous! It comes out Monday here so I'm picking it up during my lunch. Hopefully I'll get the foil copy :D

Venus is the best song on the whole album.
FACT!

Yeah, Venus is pure space glam. And how can anyone not appreciate the Sailor Moon-inspired bridge?

Though I'm kind of disappointed that the booklet didn't include any of the promotional Inez/Vinoodh photos. They were so good :(

Instead she did some geocities optical illusion pics. Meh

Yeah, album is really good. Basically pop perfection.

BTW's heights were superior, though. Sheisse & Bloody Mary>>the heights from ARTPOP

Bloody Mary, Heavy Metal Lover, and Scheisse are pretty much her three best songs.

None of the songs here come that close to them except Mary Jane Holland. It comes dangerously close for me.

If Gypsy had an instrumental outro after the country name-dropping at the end, then it would be my favorite song of hers, period. The only thing stopping it from upping The Edge of Glory is the rushed ending.

But I agree that Bloody Mary is in a field of its own.

That's pretty much me. I mean, it's pleasant enough. But I never find myself seeking it out and when I do listen to the album all the way through I almost always end up skipping it.

I really wish this album had been mastered to sound like this iTunes rehearsal.

Grunge. What could have been.

I've replaced the studio version of Swine with her iTunes Festival version.
Much better. Best track on the album. Those bouncy synths are straight out of Yeezus.

Top tracks :
Swine
Fashion!
Aura (except 1:12-1:42... Judas backwash)

Bottom tracks:
Dope
Applause
Gypsy
Do What U Want

Edit: Top 3 all time songs are Monster, Heavy Metal Lover, and probably Swine

dear lord

what a sad world it would be if gaga and perry were truly the innovative songwriters of pop, or anywhere near it

The "innovative" descriptor applied to Gaga only; but as for the best pop hooks right now, it's definitely the two of them at the forefront.

Sorry?

I don't know if her stuff qualifies as innovative really. Not like you have to do innovative stuff for your music to be good though.
But the "what a sad world" post made lol, it's just an opinion.

At 6pm EST today we will beta test VOLANTIS with the world. We invite you into our creative process during her initial stages of lift off

Anyone know what she's on about

Volantis is the flying dress

she's premiering the flying dress at the show, though in beta form.

Oh I know volantis is the flying dress, but she made it sound like she is beta testing the dress and showing the world while doing it before the artrave so I didn't know if there was another stream thing

I assume she'll be fine tuning Volantis after this and will be using it at the tour in some capacity. Shit is surely way too expensive to just be used once.
