I liked Zedd's productions on this album, and I hope that he remixes some of his work here to make it more his own, because I really liked Donatella, and I'd love to hear it in at a show of his.

That said, not a fan of the rest of the album.

Killer tracks:
Swine
Donatella

Good tracks:
Do What U Want
Applause
GUY

decent, i guess:
mary jane holland
venus
sexxx dreams
manicure

why:
aura
fashion!
dope
artpop

didn't finish the album, cut it off halfway through dope and changed it to another song. I'll pretty much just throw Swine and Donatella into a playlist and be done with this. I'm more disappointed than I thought I'd be. I didn't listen to any samples or anything so I didn't have any crazy expectations or anything, but this just didn't grab me like even Born This Way.

MIA won

The whole album has leaked properly now.

I can't say I'm surprised since it was seemingly released in Japan / China almost a week prior but still, I wonder if this will affect sales.

Haven't listen to it all the way through and it's low quality but I'm loving it. Really spotty music player too, maybe it's just Chrome.

I'm not totally into the "can you feel it can you feel it" parts in MANiCURE, just because I'm used to the iTunes live version, but it's still good.

So far, my favorite is Mary Jane Holland.

Agree very much with the bolded.

Dope is the best song on here tbh. Her piano/singing tracks were always my faves.

It's trash.

OK yeah, Dope is the one song I am not crazy about. It's alright though, because usually there's way more than just one I don't like on a given album.

My man. Finally someone giving Dope its dues. Such a raw and powerful track.

AAHHH LUH YOU MOOOAAHH THAN DOOOOOOOOOOOPE

Stop. This is a stellar pop album.

I'm going in with an open mind. I didn't really like Venus either. So far this is pretty generic. G.U.Y. has some nice vocals parts though.

Aura's a terrible track to start with. Stick with it though, there are some gems to be found.

I think my problem so far, is that the production is very crushed/compressed and generic sounding. The beats aren't doing anything for me. And normally that would be fine, if the hooks were there. So far I'm not seeing any of the melody hooks on this record?

Fashion! really growing on me now... I think the tipping point was when I realized Wil.I.Am is saying "SLAY" and not "SWAY." Eternally redeemed. Also, slay.

Dude, yes! This is absolutely it. It's a very electronic record, but all the cool synth stuff is just kind of in the background, where it should be just totally dominating a song. The only time the electronic shit gets crazy/out of hand (in a good way) is in Swine, I think.

Are you saying you want more dance breakdowns? :/ I mean, I understand the purpose of them but I think they were one of the worst trends of the past few months in pop music.

I'm not going to actually listen to a high quality leak until after the album comes out now, I've decided. I've got too much to do for Uni and I'll just be distracted.

The album is only five days away for me anyway T_T

I'll be honest, I don't know what I want (I know you weren't asking me). But I feel like if you are going to have a really hard hitting electronic album, the beats should be there. The electronics should be done well. This all sounds compressed together, and the beats are very flat and mundane. I dunno. If this album was going for a more electronic record, I understand the lack of hooks and a more focus on beats. But the beats aren't good. And now there isn't any melodic hooks (which is what she was known for). So this album doesn't really do anything great, it just does everything okay.

I would totally be more okay with this kind of album, if I dug the beats more. I didn't need another album of massive hits. But yeah. =/

I don't think all of Gaga's works need to be the same. But just think back to her past hits, and there is very clear production/beats. They drive the song. They are catchy. And then there is these massive hooks. This all just kind of blends together.

After a few listens, as someone who likes Gaga but not Pop music in general...

Aura ****
Venus *****
G.U.Y. *
Sexxx Dreams ***
Jewel n' Drugs **
Manicure *****
Do What U Want ***
Artpop ****
Swine ***
Donatella ****
Fashion! **
Mary Jane Holland ***
Dope ****
Gypsy *****
Applause ****

Surprised by the numbers of songs I actually like.

I'm actually starting to see Gaga fans break off into two distinct groups based on the songs people are liking.

I think people with a strong inclination to R&B are liking the more urban songs like Jewels n' Drugs, Sexxx Dreams, and Fashion.

And the more traditional pop fans are liking Venus and Gypsy.

I see this a lot in the way Rihanna and Christina Aguilera albums are received.

100% agreed. Every, Christina, album. Always happens.

This album is terrible. Gaga peaked with Fame Monster (Love Game, Bad Romance, Alejandro, Telephone) and now its generic european techno shit. Gaga plz.

Lol. Thing is, there is nothing high art or new about this record. I was actually expecting her to really learn from the mistakes of Born This Way, and put out something awesome. This is neither art nor pop, but flop.

eh you're talking to the wrong guy, lol. Gaga can't really do wrong in my eyes!*

*except maybe dope

It's pop. The art is in the visual that accompanies it, like the fashion, technology and videography, etc.

Though there's quite a few experimental pop songs on here (experimental for conventional pop music anyway), the "art" in the "ARTPOP" moniker is more of a reference to her invoking artistic references into her work. Which, FYI, she's been doing since her debut.

Cool thanks for the explanation. I'm still very let down by this record. IMO it sounds very uninspired and mundane. I do hope it grows on me though. I read too much into the title of the album, thinking she was going to push her pop a little further (in terms of experimenting). But at least for me, this album isn't really great pop, or even just great music in general.

But that's just me. I'll keep listening and come back in a couple weeks and see how I feel about it.

Real talk, the single line "Enigma pop star is fun, she wear burqa for fashion" is better than the BTW album in its entirety.

Its pop - to say otherwise is factually wrong. But whether you like it or not, or whether you question the title 'artpop', well thats certainly subjective.

Personally, I like it overall. I got maybe 5 or 6 songs that I really like. And thats pretty high compared to the average number of songs I like on an album.

I'll say it again though: Manicure is much, much worse than during the iTunes Festival, and thats disappointing - its ok. But not as good as it could have been.

EDIT: Not feeling it *quite* as much now that Ive listened to it several times, but its still quite good.

The iTunes Festival was a bad idea, she should have learned from You and I that previewing a song before its done usually ends with a mixed reception for the finished product.
