Monster Hunter Wilds open beta impressions

lh032

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
It’s just kind of lame because 13 other weapons all do stuff on the ground , it was the one weapon that had aerial gameplay. I mean in Rise I guess it didn’t matter as much because of wire bugs , but here in this game? What’s essentially a sequel to World? IG should have been able to carve out its own unique niche. Melee and guns are covered , literally all that’s left is air. Oh well it is what it is I guess.

Edit lh032 lh032

You can set quests to 1 person
i cant find the option to set quest limit.

First option is settings, this will allow you to select how many players quest with you.
People will still be in the hub, but you’ll be hunting alone.

Pretty dope that the game seems more seamless.

But this beta doesn't show any fixes to the biggest issue i had with worlds and that's the co-op system.

It constantly kept separating crews and any sort of setpiece or story moment would cause huge gaps in play time.

I'm hoping the fact the open world is more connected now that this will be less of an issue.

I want it to be like , start game, start lobby, play, friend joins, same lobby and that's it... seamless co-op no issue, if there's a cutscene then just play the same cutscene on both screens with the host character i don't care

120Hz / Fidelity is the way to go.

Performance mode have no sense. The game runing at 30fps at camp, but with (very) worse IQ than Fidelity, when Fidelity still running at 30-40fps at camp.. Oh boy, that gonna mean the game is very CPU heavy... Gonna be nuts on PC. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Or just very single-threaded potato code.

Only watched gameplay so far... but not sure how I feel about the focus on targeting those glowing weakspots. Is it too much to ask to just fight the monster the way we want?

Its like the world team always trying to reinvent when its not needed... iceborne absolutely gutted when they hyper focused on the need to tenderize with the CC in order to play even remotely decent.

Now its these glowing red spots, ugh. Everything else looks great tho. Well, cept the performance being eww.
I saw a streamer popping wounds with normal attacks so you can really ignore the whole focus mode.

But i mostly ignored the tenderize thing on world and still played more than decently...i'm not a speedrunner, if the hunt last 5-10 min more it's no biggie.

Jumped straight from playing MH World with some friends into giving this a quick try.
Went with the same weapon I was using for a better comparison (charge blade)

Some basic first impressions:

The mostly good:
-Overall adjusting to the gameplay coming straight from World was easy, the basics are still the same and if anything I think my character felt a tad more agile and fast.
- The new mount is fun, I like the idea of being able to hop on and heal or charge your weapon, and it makes chasing after fleeing monster a lot less annoying than in world
- I liked the animation on the monsters, as someone was saying above they move in a more natural looking way now
- I liked the alterations to the map during fights (like on the second monster), I'm looking forward to seeing if they go crazy with later on
- Having a secondary weapon is cool
- The charge blade felt similar though the hits didn't feel as impactful, I also struggled a bit adjusting to the way the SAED works here, felt harder to aim and that pre attacks makes the whole attack sequence feel longer and harder to aim. Also there seems to be some savage axe mode equivalent but I didn't get how to active it.

The bad:
- Technically it fucking sucks on Ps5. The performance mode looks horrible and the resolution mode is shitty 30fps (probably unlocked?) and even then doesn't even have particularly good IQ.
- In performance mode I genuinely think World looks way better. Better textures, models, lighting, geometry or whatever other improvement they've added on paper are completely negated by the insanely low resolution and awful IQ paired with uneven performance. It genuinely feels like I'm playing a switch game or something (with better graphics, but around the same IQ)
- Resolution mode looks better but even then stuff like draw distance and IQ aren't particularly good, and jumping straight from World at locked 60fps and 1800p checkerboard to this shit that feels like unlocked 30 is just awful.
- Ps3 called, they want their NPC's back:
oSV6pMg.jpeg

I waited until the Ps5 to play World, got it with the DLC for like $30 and had a blast with it.
I'll probably wait for the Ps6 (or equivalent) to play this and also buy it for $30 with all the DLC
You're right about world looking better.
I can't believe how rough it looks.
Probably going to stick to Rise.

Felt great! Really only thing that made me grimace was the Palico English voice. So thank goodness you can turn that off. And I guess the story just immediately rolling into colonialism vibes is not ideal.

Fucking hell, they're determined to have a good time aren't they?

I didn't wanted to say that world sometimes look better but i guess i'm not the only one thinking this.

Characters\faces\hairs are the biggest upgrade from world but the texture work is not that much better and the first zone of world is way more striking in terms of art design, first location in wild is pretty dull tbh.

This.
I checked out the opening area of World and just felt sad.
World is fizzing with life, colour, and invention.
Wilds is brown.

You have to wait for the state of the area called plenty to see the best the location has to offer, but it's still kinda meh compared to the ancient forest in world.

And i haven't seen any location in wilds that come close to the coral highland art design, i loved that fucking location.

not sure if they change it for demo or not, but feel like special ammo of light/heavy bowgun recover really fast, since most normal ammo is trash without mod and build, i find myself just mechine gun most of monster down with my heavy

Wilds probably has a big map for each biome. Wilds demo just looks like they gave you mostly desert because they love showing you rock textures from RE4R. Just like the 80 caves in DD2.

Sharius Sharius I guess HBG will be builder spender class so you can Snipe or Machine Gun more.

Mags why won't you play the melee classes?

The only options I saw last night in PS5 were for 120hz on or off.

120 on looked terrible. Is there a other performance/fidelity option somewhere or is that it?
Really?

I thought it looked as expected from MH at 120 and I'm actually pleasently surprised by the visuals.

Then again, going by MH World I already have lowered expectations for graphics in a MH game.
Always looked B-tier to me.

I'm sure Wilds will be a decent upgrade compare to World on a high end PC.
But on consoles the image quality and performance are so poor that most of the upgrades are lost. If anything it's the perfect exemplification of many current gen gens, where we had the previous game from the same devs running at native 1400p-4K and locked 60fps on Ps5/SX and now we get their newest game which doesn't really look that much better but somehow also runs at 600p 45fps.

The fidelity in performance mode is something else oh my. I'm quite interested to see a pro comparison.
Oh, i didn't see a setting to change graphics modes. I just played in the default 30fps mode and it felt great. Where is the option to toggle between Quality vs Performance modes?

Here you go. One of the things I changed instantly when I started the demo. Couldn’t stand that retarded auto running

I disabled the auto-running first thing aswell but the birdog still go crazy sometimes.

The option i was talking about is the command type 2.

I went back to World for a second to do a hunt with Lance, and well, it’s over. Lance feels like absolute garbage compared to World. What a fucking let down.
I mean based on what I've been watching both World and Rise knock it out of the park combat and skill expression wise. The focus on more grounded combat is rather tasteless IMO. I feel like Wilds will take away more then it gives...just like DD2.

Supposedly, Monster Hunter comes in two different flavors: Mainline and Portable. Mainline is 'grounded' and portable is experimental. Wilds is a mainline title, Rise is a portable one.

Except World and Rise are both considered mainline and the expansions considered spinoffs by the MH devs so that kinda falls flat on it's face. Of course if the expansions are more experimental then I guess that means wait for Wilds expansion.

Not to mention Rise was originally called Portable 5th internally. As in 5th generation. Like all other mainline Monster Hunter games.

But how does that explain why World was so good ?

I dunno, I the more I play the demo, the more torn I’m feeling. I’ve gotten every entry in the series since Tri, never thought I’d be feel this way about a MH game. This isn’t what I was expecting at all.

Finally tried it. This is like a much better world. Quality mode looked great imo and with 120hz mode it felt great too. Every game needs a 120hz option, because it reduces the input lag a ton and even if the game runs at like 30-35 fps, it still feels much better to play thanks to the lower input lag. Perf mode is utter garbage, but im gonna play this on the Pro so hopefully this wont be a problem there

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
This game feels amazing to play, especially after tweaking stuff. Just awesome. Performance is crap, hopefully the Pro will help some in that regard.

I played this earlier today. The game is ugly as shit. Looks like a remastered PS3-era game. I hated Japanese games with that look. I hope somehow some way the Pro as well as patches for PC fix that shit, but you can't fix an art style, and this game literally to me looks like a time-capsuled 2009 game with art sensibilities, i.e. graphic sensibilities, from that year.

Rey is so annoying to fight. He will fly away from a minimum of 4 times every hunt. It’s insane. I spend almost as much time chasing him and fighting him. It’s getting really old really quick.

I get that monsters have always done this. But this shit is insane. Fly all the way to the other side of the map to get hit twice Snd fly back to where he was. Why the fuck would they program shit like this. It’s the antithesis of fun.

holy maccaroni, got to see the game on PS5 now.....what happened here?
Assets, models, textures, geometry and especially the lighting look ancient and despite that the game is so heavy that the DRS stomps the IQ into downright unacceptable territory, at least in performance mode. Right now this Beta makes the release version of DD2 look like a technological masterpiece....
I´m gonna check this out again on PC come friday but this looks rough so far and if that isn`t a very old build the february release is going to be a bumpy ride...at least for console players.

I knew the RE engine had its issues with open world settings and adjusted my expectations after DD2, but damn.....

Enjoying the beta so far, but yeah, there are definitely some things to clean up performance-wise. Been playing on quality mode; at least it holds a stable 30 fps. I don't have the tech to confirm this, but my eyeballs think that performance mode is averaging around 45, and it wanders between 40-50.

Like just about every MH game, multiplayer lobbies are unintuitive to navigate. Accepting a PSN friend's invite to play did not bring me to their lobby, but instead put me in their "link group", and you cannot filter the lobby search tool to find players in your link group....you have to separately send them a friend request from the link group list, which takes several minutes to process.

Agreed. Looks and runs like shit on the PS5. Hopefully they can make some big improvements by Feb.

Ugh, absolutely HATED the tenderize mechanic because it ruined the flow of the fight.

Fingers crossed this new red mark mechanic isnt as tedious as the CC tenderize...

It’s really not. I played nonstop from last night til the beta closed (took the day off) and while you can do the R1 move while in focus, you don’t have to. The part will still take increased damage and simply appears from hitting a spot repeatedly, it’s all quite natural while playing. What is cool though, is if you do choose to pop the wound with focus + R1 you will usually get a stagger, which is nice.

So is this another one of those things like in MH world where the game performs pretty poorly and you need a next gen GPU in order to play it properly? I remember World on my 2080 and I was so sad about that performance in 1440p.

I mained lance in world, i've been seeing a few videos and golly they made the weapon way worse. It's so slow... meanwhile the weeb stick gets new toys every game. Devs clearly play favorites.

Yeah they really need to fix the lack of hitstop, the hammer feels great mechanically but shit when you hit stuff compared to world or even rise.

And the aerial spinning move feels terrible both to aim and the impacts compared to world.

To counter that i'm starting to understand the new lance and it's much more varied than world (it still feel strange to use tho), but i don't like the counter mechanic as much as i liked it in world.

I'm enjoying it with CB (my usual main) but finding it all a bit... noisy. It's harder to quickly parse than World. That's probably some combination of the map colours, low fps, and altered UI, so I'm sure I'll adapt. I appreciate the idea of a secondary weapon but would hope they change HH to remove buffs once you switch away from it.
