Motorstorm Apocalypse Review thread

It is such an incredible game.

Let me start by saying that Motorstorm is, to me, defined by its intensity. And this game is INTENSE. Some of the levels are mind boggling hyper active. You're racing at insane speeds, charging up boost, and then a helicopter flies above you firing rockets at some people around you, a huge building starts collapsing and rain is pouring into your face. Your adrenaline level goes bat shit, and just when you're fully hyped, the ground below you starts collapsing, you try to turn right, hit some ramp you haven't seen and then do a barrel roll safely landing just in front of a monster truck that's chasing you.

It is so insane that anything you've experienced in Pacific Rift pales in comparison. It is really out of this world experience and I am in shock at these negative reviews. I usualy tend to agree with the metacritic average, plus minus 5 points. But 78 for THIS game is heresy. The production values are THROUGH the roof. Everything is so stylish, so polished and so well executed that you really wonder how many years have they been doing this project. It's on another level compared to Pacific Rift.

Intensity aside, graphics, sound, vehicle behavior have all been finely tuned, with graphics engine getting the biggest overhaul. All the sparks, the destruction, the scene complexity in general, are hugely better than Pacific Rift.

The driving itself, is in my opinion, better as well. This is the first Motorstorm I've played where I managed to completely control the vehicle even in most insane situations. It's really well done.

And then there are things like perks, multiplayer and customization which I haven't even tried. Oh, and there's a progressive trophy system which highlights a trophy each time you make progress towards it in real time, which I thought was very cool.

totally agree!!!

I am so beyond disappointed in the industry in general at the reviews of PS3 exclusives. Hype has built itself in and around people now, to the point it blinds them to anything that is reasonable and successful on its own terms. This has led people to outright lie for the benefit of money and being well read. Well, fuck you people. Fuck yourselves hard and bleed to death. This game rocks.

You are talking about the bad reviews?

Are you using the hood cam? I think the graphics are even better than PR. The improvements are minor, but they are there. Higher resolution, better shadows, better anti aliasing.

Whatever. Done for the evening. Made myself an iconic MS1 buggy and tried to win the first hardcore event...no chance. Yet. Had a big smile on my face the whole evening. Great fun so far.

I wish there was a dynamic camera view option, like play in hood cam, but the camera automatically switched to behind the car when you're jumping or crashing. playing in hood cam is intense, but I don't like that you basically just see the sky when jumping or can't see the debris during crashes, just camera going crazy. I've conditioned myself to switch the camera manually when I play PR.

speaking of camera, I can't believe we go through 3 Motorstorm games and we never have cockpit view. it's obviously part of their original concept shown from MS1 cg trailer, with the dirt flying to your window and wiper going on. to be honest, I'm not even sure if it's gonna be playable in that condition, visibility could be so bad it's unplayable, still, I kinda want to experience it.

does Motorstorm vehicle have interior model? maybe they're too poly starved to even make car interior model? so that's why we never got cockpit view since they didn't even model the cockpit

Lucky you ;) I'm guessing that your website will give Motorstorm a high review based on your impressions. Where can I check out the review?
The review isn't live yet, as I'm supposed to write it and I didn't have enough time last past days to finish the game. It's going to be a 9.0 if the quality I've experienced in the early stages continues later on.

I happen to be in the cockpit from time to time in photomode. Maybe a bug. The cockpits are modeled, but not very good. However, that's understandable because they don't show them.

Dynamic camera: Strange thing is, I had this happen from time to time that the camera went out of the car and back in. Maybe a bug as well. Happened in deep water and while jumping.

Yikes, so I'm blind, a liar and apparently stupid for thinking that Motorstorm: Apocalypse is very good but flawed and disappointing in a number of respects (7.5 out of 10, by the way).

Trust me, I don't earn a cent from writing my reviews. I do it for the love of it, and all I ever do is express my honest opinion. There is no hidden agenda, no conspiracy. Please, for the love of all that is holy, get a life.

Walked right into TESCO an hour ago, picked it off the shelf, bought it no problem and walked way a very happy man.

Happy days!!!

What didn't you like about the game?

@glaurung

lol, why? Never! We just bought the game, it's totally legit. No way the could punish us for it, even if they wanted to. And they don't want.

Finished the entry stages with Mash (the noob character). The epilogue was sweet (it's the straight stage that has been shown a lot in previous videos, albeit MUCH polished) and the new stages with the new character have been fun. The difficulty has increased noticeably, but it's still not too hard (all fuck-ups were my own fuck-ups, instead of opponents boosting impossibly fast past me). Awesomesauce stuff, this game truly is fun.

...UGH... waiting until April 12th here in the US is just too much...

I was able to pick up the Demo with the Gamestop code though =)... I used it as soon as a I got the email... they might have pulled the Demo soon after from what I'm reading in this thread

Picked up the game in Australia. Really great fun. The first time a road collapsed on me, changing the path, it blew my mind. The way the action taking place in the game is part of the storytelling feels really natural.

I think the graphics aren't as lush as Pacific Rift, but it is forgivable with so much going on.

Yet to try MP. PSN ID is StackboyRoyale if anyone wants to race.

I haven't been able to get into a MP game in Australia. I only got into one lobby which was full of Europeans and it disconnected me as it was starting. =(

In the Veteran part (highest difficulty) of the Festival mode, rubber banding becomes pretty apparant. It doesn't really matter if you crash one time or twenty times in the first few laps, you will always somehow be in the top 5-10 coming up on the last lap, and then what really matters is how you do in that last lap. Also, the AI racers as such assholes... Ramming you from behind, making you spin out, etc. They sure pissed me off many times along the way.

Oh well, still didn't have too hard of a time completing the Festival (although I haven't finished 1st in every race yet). It's much easier to complete than it was in PR. Still have the special "Hardcore" races to do though. And I've only played a few online races yet, so that's what I'll be doing from now on! The online mode is pretty deep, with levels to achieve, money/points to earn and bet against other racers (you bet money on one opponent in each race, and you win the bet if you beat that specific opponent - even if you don't place high overall), perks, etc.

Is this thread acting as the OT? I couldn't find an OT via search.

Anyways, I ordered the game from ebay yesterday when I heard it would be pushed back and my copy turned up this morning - so far it seems pretty damn crazy, and it might just be my imagination, but the handling seems a tad lighter than it was on Pacific Rift, the vehicles don't feel as weighty or solid as they did previously.

Here's a couple of photos; (I love games with photo modes ^_^)

If you love arcade racers, this game is a must have imo. Sure, nothing is perfect, but for an arcade racer MS:A is pretty damn close imo. Every review below an 8 is a joke imo for a title of this caliber. There is so much content, so much variation. I can't take anyone serious how is pooping on the game because of the comic sequences. I mean, seriously, those are a fraction of the whole package. And you can skip them. I kinda like them though, because they remind me of early racing games, where you had those weird and cheesy descriptions in the manual like in F-Zero or Twisted Metal etc. - I think it's exactly what Evolution is doing there and it kinda helps the whole festival atmosphere.

One thing before some new pics: I think this game is the best representation of an apocalyptic city in any game, ever. It's just so believable. You really feel that this city is going down. There is chaos everywhere and it's very organic.

Sidzed2: Yeah, please act like my obviously general response was directed exactly at you in your fucking bedroom whacking it as we speak. Yeah, dude, I'll get a life when you fuckjobs show some compassion and constructive criticism towards a game. 7.5 is a fucking C. This game ain't a fucking average game chiefton. What the hell is average about this game. The graphics looks better than GT5 to me and yes I understand GT5 is a 50FPS game with horrrendous tearing ;).

If all these Dbag reviewers want to start using their depleted grade scale on these PS3 games then do me a favor and use it on every fucking game you review. Obviously, my post has nothing to do with you guy. It's a general post to all the reviewers looking for hits. The Ps3 has been this hitbag this whole generation for no other reason than people like something to shout about when the exact opposite is true. Tell me I wrote your fucking name on my post and directed my comments at you. You are welcome to your opinion. It don't mean much unless its constructive and critical and I wouldn't know would I cuz I never heard of you and never read your review. Think before you speak or don't speak at all because what you said had no bearing at all on my post. World doesn't revolve around you and I wasn't generalizing every bad review just most of the major gaming sites whether bad or good (if they don't show any reasoning then fuck they might as well be some shitty blog and they pretty much are) as it is plain as day that PS3 exc. are getting the shit end when other FAR lesser games are rated way beyond their scope and polish. Don't connect me with your own emotions. Your review may be well and good. It could also be construed as bullshit I haven't read it nor do I want to unless it's in depth and serious.

I wrote down the entire soundtrack list:

Traction Control (Noisia MS:A Remix)
Drifter (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Dryve (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Hypersonic (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Speedball (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Shockland (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Loco (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Breakneck (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Motorstorm Apocalypse (DJ Shadow D&B Remix)
Mercurial (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Charger (Noisia MS:A Remix)
Deathmatch (Noisia MS:A Remix)
Lalo Schifrin - Bullitt (Schifrin vs. Elite Force Remix)
Motorstorm Apocalypse (DJ Shadow Remix)
Oversteer (Noisia MS:A Remix)
Spazm (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Paradise Alley (Elite Force MS:A Remix)
Blown (Noisia MS:A Remix)
The Assembly (Noisia MS:A Remix)
Slipstream (Noisia MS:A Remix)
Crash Test (Noisia MS:A Remix)

<3 The soundtrack, I hate everyone saying it's one of the worst ones in recent memory. :P

I can never be bothered to listen to the racing music. I always loved their ambiance and general racing tone. I appreciate they have decent soundtracks, though.

MS has always had good racing music. Got me into Pendulum a lot.

MS2's soundtrack was generally good, but had a lot of non-electronic music which didn't appeal to me. This game only has electronic tracks (I think), which for me is awesome.

Has anyone started creating an Official Topic for this game yet? If not, I can take it upon myself to create one (although I certainly won't have BruceLeeRoy's skills, that's for sure).

I didn't like the music in first one and I think second one was okay, but this one is definitely rocking my boat. Loving the techno-beat style and change of tone when you're in the final lap. It reminds me a lot of Split Second, which is good.

Delicious photo mode screens in here, i hope the game looks that good while playing it.

It looks great, especially from the hood view. In some ways, Pacific Rift may be more impressive at a glance (simply because lush jungles usually are), but once you see all the shit going on in Apocalypse, with barely a dropped frame, you will be impressed. Plus, it's running at a higher res, so it's a bit sharper.

Thanks, Wipeout HD team, for bringing Noisia on board!

It doesn't sound like they put in a replay mode :/ With all the crazy shit that goes on in each race, i've never understood the lack of this feature.

Oh well, Day 1 for me in the US.

Alright, I've started creating an OT, so dibs on it! Shouldn't take too long hopefully, I assume it'll be up in a couple of hours, tops.

It looks better. But I really have to say that MS looses a lot when you don't play it from the hood view. That really makes a huge difference.

I think the "Clan-Tag" option is missing from my options. I can't find it, it's in the manual though. Does anyone know more about this?

@Road

I think it's even more impressive. Some scenes are just wow. The shadows are a lot smoother and the resolution is higher. Especially for the shadows. It's not a worlds difference, but it's there.

Online Mode is great fun! Betting feature is genious. There is sooo much stuff to unlock. I'll play the game for ages. Like PR.

Nope, haven't seen that option in the actual game either.

Yeah I'm surprised there's no OT for this game, its already out here and sitting on shelves for last two days. Looking forward to the OT :)

Probably because it's been delayed everywhere but in mainland Europe. Most people won't be playing it until next month or so.

I love those collector cards they put in the game. It really makes you exploring all those tracks. Also they are basically like a Motorstrom compendium because they include MS1 and MS2 as well. Great addition, even more value.

I read that there were supposed to be tsunamis on some tracks (or maybe just one). However, I've played through the whole Festival, and I sure haven't seen one. There's a race called "Deadly Waves" or something like that, but not a single tsunami in sight. Could the patch have removed them, out of respect for the events in Japan? Or were there no tsunamis to begin with?

The only thing close to that is the tornado on the Boardwalk stage. Otherwise, no tsunamis or anything.

Shouldn't you be able to delete the update and play that particular track again? Backup your game save just in case it woudn't work without the update.

Heading home now to spend some quality time with Motorstorm and try out the multiplayer.

If you want to hit me up and rack up some easy wins because I do not know the tracks and I suck at racing, add me.

Thrakier, may I use your beautiful screenshots for my OT?

lol, before you wrote this I already sent you a PM. ;D Amazing. *highfive*

I hope they patch in the clan tag otion, it's in the manual anyway! Want to have an GAF Motorstorm Clan. Would be amazing. ;D

Motorstorm:Apocalypse offical thread of "OH SHIT, WTF IS HAPPENING!!!"

I said "oh shit" a lot while playing this game. ;D

EDIT:

Official Thread of "lol, reviews"

Where do we trade PSN tags for some races? Only one of my usual crew has the game, the rest won't until official release so I'd like to play with some guys from here if I could.

Tag is chalkitdown.

What about "MotorStorm: Apocalypse |OT| Worst. Timing. Ever"? Or is it too sensitive? :P

I wouldn't take the tsunami thing in the OT at all. Just as an information that the game is delayed.
