This was a great movie. Very human, and while not a comedy, it did make me laugh out loud several times.

This movie is in My Top Ten Favorite Movies of All Time. Such a great movie that has a vicious bite to it. I saw most of the directors other movies and loved them too but this one is his best

I thought this movie was excellent, but I give the edge to Seven Psychopaths. Everyone is so brilliant in their performance, the comedy is top notch but there are legit emotional moments that work, and while the whole cast rocks I would say in particular Christopher Walken gives his best performance I’ve seen from him along with having the best written character he’s ever played IMHO.

Priest

I have never seen this film before, and it still felt somehow nostalgic. I guess it's because of this is the style of movies I used to watch alot 10-15 years ago. The film is schlock, but entertaining if you turn your brain off. Film was about a killing machine, dubbed a Priest by the Church, who fight against vampires in an apocalyptic world with western elements. I can't call ot a good film, but I had fun watching it.

I watched the original, and had the same opinion on the stupid decisions. It was clear the social allegory took precedence over writing realistic characters.

Saw Speak No Evil last night and quite enjoyed it. Felt that the trailers showed to much of the movie. I thought it was acted well and had some very intense scenes.

Have not watched the original which I heard was preferred over this version.

Huh, first I’ve heard of this, but Karl Urban confirmed it so it’s apparently true. Maybe my most rewatched movie of the past ~decade.

Civil War (2024)

Hot off the Alex Garland mention, loaded this up.

In the first few minutes I rolled my eyes a bit at the seemingly idealized portrayal of journalists—knowing journalists—but I trusted Garland to bring an intelligent and thoughtful screenplay, and he nailed it again.

The film deftly avoids the usual partisan bickering and portrays a modern American civil war as something fairly plausible: an authoritarian overreaches, fractures the country, and the most powerful states step in to take care of business.

The story arc for the journalists is quite good and the final act knocks it out of the park. Despite the somewhat low budget, there’s no bad CG and it gets a lot accomplished, though it is mostly a road trip to get to know the characters, alongside the main character of war-torn America.

Feels like the core takeaway intended by Garland is to show how grim it would all be if we went down this road. As it definitely would be. Maybe as a way to deescalate recent civil tensions.

Quite the bleak portrayal of the war journalists themselves, too, as thrill-seeking, self-interested, and voyeuristic.

This is ultimately why I didn't like the movie, the protagonists just put themselves in these situations for their own selfish reasons and I felt like the film was wanting you to think they were suffering for some noble task. I just found them pretty annoying throughout and it soured the whole movie for me.

Watched The Boy and the Heron with my daughter last weekend, and we couldn't even finish it and turned if off halfway through. Just an intensely boring mishmash of standard Ghibli themes and imagery with no interesting story or characters to support them. We've been fans of the studio since we first got My Neighbor Totoro on VHS like 20 years ago, and we know they are no longer in their prime (The Wind Rises was mediocre but we at least finished it). This is a sad new low.

Man it holds up great. The Nightcrawler intro is still badass, Pyro is still super cool and its wild to see such a younger Jackman.

Back when Marvel was good. Xmen and Tobey Maguire Spidey was all I needed.

Joker: Folié a Déux

After watching this I totally understand both sides. One for those who did not like it and also filmmakers on why they wanted to do this. Because the film is certainly not great. There are lots of musical numbers that bring the pace to a halt and they are all sang with an off tone voice. But even then, I understand that it is completely different from it's predecessor for a reason. Both films are about deconstring a character, first to insanity and then to self-acceptance. That is why I also weren't bothered by the ending, I think it brough closure to Arthur's story. And he finally seemed happy.

Because the film is so loathed (for now at least) it certainly won't be winning any trophies. But DP of this film certainly deserves one from some of those shots. That's all I'm going to say about this film.

The Death of Stalin (2017)

Planned to watch it for a while since it's from the creator of Veep, which is easily a top3 comedy for me. Honestly, Death of Stalin doesn't hit these notes, not even close. Regardless it's still a great movie, actually fueled my interest in the whole thing and so I started watching a 24 part series from CNN from 1998 called the Cold War, which is fascinating.

Really depends if you're into these political shenanigan kinda things, if so, then I think it's worth a watch. 3/5.

That wasn't my takeaway. By the end, the midget girl is completely unfazed by directly causing the death of her mentor and is zeroed in on capturing her dying moment indifferently and moving on to the POTUS's dying moment. There was nothing idealized about that. She also didn't care at all about their colleague's earlier death either, which also saved her life and was caused by her actions. She becomes an effective war journalist basically by becoming a thrill-seeking, self-centered sociopath. Meanwhile Kirsten Dunst's character loses her ability to shrug it all off, becomes human again after letting it use her up, and can't do the work effectively anymore.

It didn't feel very much like Garland's intent was for the mission itself to be a genuinely noble task, either. What value did they create to society by getting a pathetic blurb from the dying POTUS and then taking a photo of his corpse? Midget girl couldn't even say the words to save the two men's lives in the second act when it was in her hands. She's a coward relying on everyone around her to prop her up, culminating in a moment where she'll get to be an award-winning hero war journalist, with blood on her hands from a trail of bodies.

Salem's Lot (2024)

A new filmation of a classic novel by Stephen King just dropped on Max, and since I sub to it, I decided why the heck not. Unlike the version from 2004, this one takes place in 1975, like the original book. It's an old-school vampire film in good and bad. They cut corners when it comes to visual and mostly kept to classic techniques. It's good for one watch, but has no substance for another one.

I just love it, I grew up reading 2000AD but stopped when Dredd got a letter from some kid that made him question the morality of his job. He needs to be completely ruthless. Dredd the movie is classic old-school judge/jury/executioner JD. Perfect actors for it, superb villain.

If I won the lottery I would fund that right now.

First time I saw it was a dodgy download, then I got the blu-ray that includes a 3D version I still haven't seen because I can't figure out how to view it on my VR setup, and more recently the 4K version. I can watch that film endlessly, it's a cinematic roller coaster ride.

The Raid 1 & 2, Dredd, Alita, Mission Impossible Fallout, Fury Road, The Yellow Sea, Edge of Tomorrow, John Wick, Top Gun Maverick, Jack Reacher, Midway, Sleepless Night, anything from Christopher Nolan, a few MCU entries like Winter Soldier and Infinity War, 13 Hours (and the first 15 minutes of 6 Underground), the upper half of Guy Richie's output, Shadow (Zhang Yimou), probably more stuff from Asia that isn't coming to mind yet.

Baskin was a surprisingly decent body horror from Turkey - a group of cops get a call and they end up having an encounter with a strange cult. Some scenes were quite disturbing and actually testing how much I can watch without squinting my eyes. Some good cinematography as well. The ending wasn't the best, but I had good fun overall.

I really have to watch more foreign movies since this one is almost 10 years old and I had no idea it existed.

Raid 1 & 2 are the action movie equivalents of Blade Runner for me as I can never manage to finish them, or get very far in, before getting bored and turning them off. I finally checked off There Will Be Blood from that dubious list so maybe there is some hope left.

I'd love John Wick if it weren't for the CG blood. I really dislike the sequels though.

Fury Road I do love.

I'll check out Shadow.

A pleasant surprise if there ever was one. Bough the Blu-ray because if was cheap, and a fantasy adventure featuring Sean Connery seemed like a nice idea. What I got was a fun fantasy adventure. It looked quite well considering it was made in 1996, and performances were good all around. Maybe David Thewliss should have played the main antagonist less over the top, but other than that, well done. I must say though, looking at this, and comparing it to The Lord of the Rings, which released only 5 short years later, the jump in visual and production quality is massive. And this is not a dig at Dragonheart at all, as it looks like the best it could have at that time, with time, money and technology they had.

That George Clooney and Brad Pitt movie on Apple TV. It was pretty meh. It started off pretty interesting and then it basically became a more light hearted part action, part dramedy. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see it, but if you're bored, have nothing to watch, and want a movie where you don't have to think, it's fine to kill a couple hours.

Speak No Evil

A family is invited to spend a whole weekend in a lonely home in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that a dark side lies within the family who invited them.

I think the first two acts were well made and fun to watch but the 3rd act felt like an afterthought. It wasn't all the exciting after the 'reveal'. I already knew what was going to happen and I was only watching to see how they execute the finale.

James McAvoy is excellent in this one and I would love to see more of Scoot McNairy. That guy is an great actor too.

It's very good and interesting in my opinion, it starts off slow but gets a lot better starting midway. If you know about Albert Pyun one of the best B movie makers in the 80s than it's one of his better movies in my opinion. Although you have to be able to handle the actress's voice. Her voice actually does sound like that even in real life which was one of the reason why Pyun gave her the role. I don't mind her voice but some people obviously would.

Good movie. I liked the actors and the cinematography (by Avatar actor Giovanni Ribisi) a lot too, And you're right, the less you know the better.
