I saw Anora a couple nights ago and really enjoyed it, bunch of great comedic performances in terms of their timing and delivery.

I saw Anora last night going in blind aside from knowing its film festival and critical reception, and that a stripper gets involved with rich Russian. Didn’t even know it turns very comedic. Any way, fantastic movie and I highly recommend it.

Yeh it was funnier than I expected. Not that they’re totally the same but it reminded me of Uncut Gems.

Tropic Thunder. One of my favourite comedies. My wife hadn’t ever watched it so I thought it was important she hear such cinematic quotes like, “never go full retard”, “what do you mean, you people”, and “this head movie makes my eyes rain”. No wonder RDJ got nominated for an Oscar, he’s so good in this. Writing in it is awesome too.

Turns out using a serial killer police procedural isn't a great vehicle for a martial arts flick at least not one with a plot as dumb as Kung Fu Killer. It has some fun fight sequences and a lot of fun call backs but the wire-Fu is distracting and the CG is terribad.

With a weekend full of movies, Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi (2003) was my weirdest watch. The fun action is completely ruined by awful, awful, awful CGI blood and dismemberment effects and the only thing worse was the misplaced and unfunny slapstick jokes that popped up five or six times throughout the movie. And just when I'm ready to completely hate it, we get a big dance number right before the credits. I still hate you but I appreciate how confused I am now.

Hidden Fortress is wonderfully shot, has great performances, and some fun action sequences but it probably isn't something I'll come back to. I just never felt any sense of danger for the characters and of course you had a storybook ending.

Those movies are awesome. Okay the last 15 minutes of Substance is shit. I will agree to that, the rest of the movie is amazing imo.

Godzilla Minus One, saw it in theater, it was an amazing experience
For a movie called "Substance" it lacked anything of the sort. Definitely didn't need to be TWO HOURS AND TWENTY MINUTES long either. Seesh.

Godzilla Minus One was melodramatic to the nth degree. And the only thing I could think of during the film's setpieces were "oh right this was made on a lower budget". Meaning, every time something CGI'y happened you would have scenes that just linger on the human characters on a soundstage lol. Huge explosion > instantly cut to some character looking at it from a reverse shot.

I mean the CGI itself was impressive, sure but overall I was just bored to tears. The way they 'introduce' Godzilla at the start of the movie was so lackluster as well. He just shows up and the character instantly calls him "Godzilla" because "the locals call him that". Oh cool so there's this giant fuckin' lizard roaming the island, the locals know of it and that's the origin story. Not that it needs much mind you but the way its handled in this film was so clunky. Zero build up.

It's funny as the Planet of Monsters anime trilogy treats the IP with much more reverence and originality.

Sorry bit of a rant. I get why people might've enjoyed the movies I listed but they're not for me.

Damn, this was one I always wanted to check out because it sounded cool, I just hadn’t gotten to it yet. I’ll still get to it eventually, but I’ll keep my expectations in check.
The Void is pretty entertaining in my opinion. It has great cult vibe, good pacing, and otherworldly elements reminiscent of Carpenter films. Your mileage may vary.

This movie is what made star wars so great ❤️

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 4.5 / 5 - Classic war film. Watched it as a boy with my Dad but been so long forgot the majority of it. Interesting premise. Great dialogue.

The Enemy Below (1959) 4 / 5 - Great war time movie that manages to stay suspenseful and keep your attention all the way through. It's like watching a real life version of the Battleships board game. Great acting from both Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens with both sides coming across as human.

Where Eagles Dare (1968) 5 / 5 - One of the best war movies I have ever seen, and plays out like a modern action film, but Ingridd Pitt in her Bavarian dress gives it the best perfect score. 😍

Paint Your Wagon (1969) 4 / 5 - I don't care what anyone says this movie is hilarious, I can't remember the last time I've laughed out so hard during a movie ("Howdy Parson, Welcome to Hell!"). It's slapstick like humour but without the modern silliness. The great music gives it cult status but I agree it isn't for everyone.

The Godfather (1972) 4 / 5 - It demands a lot of attention and probably much better on a rewatch, especially after watching Part II.

Papillon (1973) 3.5 / 5 - Great acting, good story, not a bad film by any means at all but I just got really bored of it especially towards the end. Everything just seems to fall flat. It's got nothing on The Great Escape.

The Godfather Part 2 (1974) 5 / 5 - I can only imagine how the world reacted to this masterpiece when it was released. It's so good in itself but it also makes the first film infinitely better and immediately rewatchable. The acting of Al Pacino is probably the best I have ever seen.

Legends of the Fall (1994) 4 / 5 - Emotive and beautiful. The landscape and scenery ilicits a strong response especially if you have ever lost your family members, or a place you previously called home and held dear to you. A particular scene near the end, a redemptive arc you could say, made me tear up.

Cold Mountain (2003) 4.5 / 5 - Slow starter but impactful ending. There is a theme of meaning and fate which is subtle but extemely powerful. Now one of my all time favourite films.

Over the Weekend I watched Substance on Sunday morning
4/5 - awesome body horror but I can't get over why someone would go through such a thing if they are not personally getting the benefits

Heretic - 5/5 - Slow and being so full of talking it should have began to bore me but it was so well written and Hugh Grants performance just kept you glued to your seat.

This is the remake from 2006. To be fair, I didn't even know this was a remake until I had watched it. Visuals were good, but most of the actors were one note, and most of the things that happened were so unbelievable, that it made hard for me to take this film seriously. Kurt Russell was pretty much the only actor I knew beforehand, maybe for a reason. It was relatively fun for one view, but probably does not hold on for another watch.

This was a rewatch and I think I enjoyed it more than my first viewing (can't believe this came out in 2021, time fucking FLIES).

It's great display of current society

I share deeply in the frustration this film expresses, and never has a film made me feel more seen and sane in my own opinion. Not to mention how well made this film is, a nearly 2 and a half hour political satire, that manages to be entertaining all the way throughout.

And I gotta say that Jonah Hill is so funny in this

Easy 8/10 for me.

Absolutely fantastic movie and sadly, leaning more and more towards being a documentary rather than fiction.

Just finished this one.

It absolutely destroyed me. Nick Nolte had a couple of moments in the film that should be considered Oscar worthy.

I loved how the film keeps peeling back the layers. The MMA fights were done very well too. Fantastic film. I can't believe I haven't heard about it before.

Go in blind if you want to see it.

Extremely fun movie series so far with action sequences that are over quickly (which is how I'd imagine these types of confrontations would go in real life) and filled with highly exaggerated gore which proves that paint-your-wagon-red paint is far superior to digital effects that are so common today. The music is awesome. The only downside is that our protagonist reminds me so much of Jeff Gerstmann that is hard not to burst out in laughter with how similarly expressive their facial mannerisms can be. Can't wait to watch the next four movies.

Full Eclipse 1993 TV movie starring Mario Van Peebles. I'd never seen him in anything, but he's a pretty good actor. This movie is pretty compelling most of the way through, even if it gets pretty weird with the Werewolf stuff and has a rushed ending.

I was thinking when I started watching it last night, I don't remember any movie I've watched where a woman gets shot up all gory or gets mauled, asked ChatGPT about it 😜 and most of the movies it came up with including that type of content had female leads.

Then lo and behold later in the movie women are getting shot by men and one woman associate gets bitten to death by the main werewolf guy. Granted they were on a drug and were near invicible but it was surprising to see.

I have seen very few movies that'd even closely be labeled horror, though as this one was. Action / thriller / horror.

I gave it 7 out of 10 on imdb because I enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it's a great movie or anything.

I think I'll watch New Jack City next.

I've been buying movies for years at goodwills and thrift stores and have wanted to participate in this thread for sime time and am finally getting around to watching some. It's hard for me to sit still for long with my mega GAD (anxiety) so I usually stick to gaming... trying to change that.
