Movies You’ve Watched Lately |OT| - 2024

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
My son and I watched Return of the Living Dead last night. Probably one of my favorite zombie movies of all time.

Of course, my wife walked in to talk to us during the scene where Linnea Quigley starts dancing naked on a tomb.

TRAP.

Ehh.. not sure yet. It was entertaining. Can't be arsed to get into critical analysis mode rn.
Terrible, save your brain the work.
I learned after watching it that the singer is M. Night's daughter.

No wonder the first 45 minutes felt like the most expensive demo reel.
Her singing is ok but she can't act for shit.

Remove Josh Hartnett & this should have been kept as a private family project 😋

It was so cliché and predictable it fucked with my mind lol.

Was going in blind and hoped it had gone in the way I, again, hoped it'd gone.

So yeah you're spot on.

Saw that in the intro credits. And acting wasn't really on my priority list with this one, see above.

I liked seeing Hartnett tho.

It's the best horror comedy ever made in my opinion. Can't tell how many times I've seen it, probably more than 30. Sometimes I watch it twice in the same year and it's always entertaining.

Such a shame that none of the sequels are good. The third one is maybe decent, but due to amount of self-mutilation not an easy one to (re)watch.

I’ve not seen it yet but I hear most say Hartnett’s acting was the one solid thing about it. Cinema Snob in particular said, “it’s been a real long time I’ve seen a performance this good in a movie this bad!”

Thank you for your post. I now have my movie for tonight!

My buddy’s friend runs a small one-screen theater in LA, and since I’m in town I decided to check it out. They’ve been playing horror movies (all curated by Jordan Peele) this month, and tonight was a Swedish film called Let The Right One In.

I had no idea what to expect, but it was awesome. A bit slow and not conventionally scary, but it was really good. I don’t want to say too much about it in case anyone here wants to see it. Tagging NotMyProblemAnymoreCunt NotMyProblemAnymoreCunt and John Marston John Marston in case you guys haven’t seen it

Here are the other movies they played this month.

Such a great series.

What a weird film. I was totally lost at the beginning, but the more I watched it, the more intrigued I was. All the time more and more information is given to the watcher, until the end twist. Which actually isn't a twist at all, everything will be as it was told at the beginning of the film. Fun and captivating thriller, absolutely recommended.

The Apprentice (2024)
Movie that shows a dramatized version of how a young Donald Trump in the 60s met influential lawyer, fixer and NY socialite Roy Cohn, who takes a liking to him and teaches him in his ways.

I wanted to like this film more than I ended up doing.

Basically it's being carried by Jeremy Strong. Whenever he's there, it's 5/5. Whenever he's not, it's losing me quicker than Donald is losing attendees at his rallies. This works pretty well for the first half of the film, where Cohn is a much bigger focus of the story, since he is also a much more interesting character (as such, easier to write for) to begin with. The picture tries to stay interesting later on by being more and more gratuitous, sometimes even pandering, which backfires greatly for anyone who is in it for more, than basic MSNBC-level-Trump-bashing. Maria Bakalova in particular didn't impress me.

Without Strong, this wouldn't be worth watching at all.

2/5

My favorite Terry Gilliam film. I do have to watch the show on Syfy. I heard that it's fantastic

Haunted Wedding - a hallmark romance where the two people getting married are ghost hunters but also have to reunite two ghost that love each other but were denied their chance in life. The actors are fun, the story is dumb, but the movie is really enjoyable. I watched it with my wife, and I was entertained.

You're secretly a romantic 👀 (Nothing wrong with that)

Seems like I enjoyed Trap a bit more than others. Josh Hartnett was great, and so was Alison Pill playing counter to him. Great premise that just fell down with a wah-wahhhhh. At least not his worst stuff.

edit: Just finished The First Omen. I...was so not prepared. It took the one real life thing that has the biggest fuck-no ick factor for me and went terrible, terrible places with it.

Am I Racist - It is supposed to be funny and there are parts that are funny. But over all it is sad to me how much people have obsessed on race in the country. The best segment is when every day people are being interviewed and talk about how little race matters to them. Instead of the grifters, baiting and destroying swaths of the population for their own gain.

I watched Winter Kills 1979 with Jeff Bridges on Tubi because I wanted to see the tits of some actress in Robocop 2. Mifune makes an appearance and speaks English.

As for the movie itself I'm just left confused but chatgpt tells me that's the whole point.

Time to read ebert's review

I tried to watch Return of the Living Dead. I made it about ten minutes in before turning it off, never to return. I don't mind camp and B movies at all, but this is just plain bad.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Pippin Took is an asshole and makes me so fucking angry at his stupidity. I hate him. I want to Spartan kick him into a void. I know, I know, hobbits are mischievous and curious and they act to move the script along. But holy shit does this guy fuck absolutely everything up and it is infuriating. Even Gandalf calls him stupid. The wizard duel, as well as the balrog fight, are still two of my favorite movie moments. I also enjoy Cate Blanchett's Galadriel. I haven't seen the trilogy in awhile, and I will watch the other two movies over the next two nights. What else can be said that hasn't been said about it? Great production, casting, set design, costumes, music, the list goes on and on. and Christopher Lee was awesome.

From Dusk Till Dawn
A classic. I recently saw it while not sober and holy shit was the first half intense while not sober lol. It feels like two different movies. The first half is a gritty and violent crime drama, and the second half is a horror flick that doesn't take itself seriously while still entertaining and somehow feeling right despite what it followed. I watched it again tonight while sober, and I've watched it enough times now to know the dialogue and to contemplate the little nuances and juicy bits of characterization that are hinted at by the script and highlighted by the subtlety of the great casts' performances. Clooney was great in this role, and so was Keitel.

Trap is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It was so bad that while I was watching I was waiting/hoping that at the end it would reveal itself to be some metaphor for like mental health and trying to escape your own mind or something like that. Or it being some twist where we were actually inside the brain of an artificial intelligence trying to find a way to escape, so it constructed a virtual scenario that played out in the way the movie did to see if it could escape.

Nope, it was just an awful movie. Felt like just an excuse for MNS to cast his daughter in a film.

It was laughably bad and if it was a parody I'd get it, but it took itself very seriously. Let's recap it here, shall we?

The whole premise to begin with is absurd. Plotting to catch a serial killer at a concert? Seriously? It's really as dumb as the trailers let on.

Then the FBI somehow informs all the custodians about the plot. The one custodian decides to tell some random stranger about it, which is laughable. Who of course turns out to be the killer.

Then Hartnett somehow becomes McGyver and is able to maneuver his way through the entire arena around trained law enforcement officials who are supposed to be suspicious of every man in the building(as dumb as this all is), yet they aren't suspicious of him.

They introduce and build up this "elite profiler" so much that when they first introduce her they only show the back of her head, then do some epic turn to reveal her identity. Then the movie barely uses her lol. She's totally irrelevant.

So anyway.... he's able to coax his daughter getting up on stage by talking to MNS's character. Yeah, because people totally don't try to do that all the time and he happens to set it up mid-concert. He then gets his daughter back stage where the MNS's pop star daughter is told that a serial killer is going to kill some guy remotely with carbon monoxide(WTF? If you're a serial killer, why didn't you just kill the guy right away? And why rig it with carbon monoxide?) So he's somehow able to get out of an arena that was purposefully rigged to catch a serial killer without being checked by FBI or security.

So this pop star then decides to play hero and offer to go to the girl's house with a serial killer. Skipping ahead, Hartnett turns out to be Jack Bauer. He has a hidden passage in his house, somehow escapes and takes out a trained and armed FBI agent outside, is somehow able to undress him of his gear quickly enough and without being spotted to where he can slip away and hop into the Lady Raven's limo. Then he drives to an area that happens to be heavily trafficked, he allows her to roll down the window, she somehow is able to break the car part to unhook her cuff, Josh Hartnett somehow seated in a limo is able to change out of his gear and into street clothes and escape without being seen. Then he somehow makes his way aaaall the way back to his house, that the FBI somehow isn't covering from all sides to protect his family from a serial killer.

He breaks in, his wife admits she knew he was a serial killer so she planted the ticket(instead of contacting the police like a normal person). Then she drugs his pie with crushed up pills, that somehow Hartnett didn't notice when eating it. Then the FBI bust in, for some reason are not armed with live weapons, but are warmed with tasers. They tase him like 5 times, none of them work like he's Hulk, he's able to attack and crush the face of an armed agent like he's Gregor Clegane, then they finally barely subdue him. All while he's supposed to be drugged no less.

Then, knowing all of this about him. They for some reason allow him to hug his daughter and play with a bike so he can steal a spoke from it. And not only allow it, but don't see him do it. Then put him in the back of an armored car without any guard. And the movie just ends with Hartnett having this weird smile that he had all movie that was akin to something out of The Happening.

And none of that was parody. It was a real serious movie that actually happened. Good god. If I had a Youtube reaction channel, I'd loved to have watched that live and mocked it to my followers. It would have been great.

Lee - story about ww2 photographer and her capturing much of the photos of the Concentration camps and famously of Hitler's apartment. I like d the movie and thought it was engaging. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

For real, though, Pippin is a prick in FotR. He grows eventually, thankfully

I do think it is a movie for his daughter because she wants to be a singer. And MNS wants to prove that she can.

Terrifier. Not a bad scary movie. The gore was graphic but the effects didn't make it stomach churning.

Bonesaw tomahawk. Another movie where people get bisected. Enjoyed it ok. Nothing stellar despite a relatively famous cast

Music by John Williams. It was a great doc about the life and music of JW. I was surprised his son who is the lead singer of Toto was not in it but his daughter was. But has had an amazing career. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Watched the Trump biopic, 'The Apprentice'. Sebastian Stan is fantastic but the film itself is incredibly shallow, skating through Trump's early years, which should have been the most interesting and relevant ones to a film ostensibly telling the story of how the Trump of today came to be, and never having any worthwhile observations or questions about its subject beyond hitting the usual attack points without a hint of grace or subtlety. When the movie wants to portray Trump as an egotist who is sensitive about his hair, it has him rape his wife in a fit of rage because she calls him 'balding'. When it wants to show where Trump's abrasive, confrontational style of argumentation comes from, it has Roy Cohn (a very good Jeremy Strong) bluntly lay it out early on as his three rules for being a winner. There's little sense of Cohn having to manipulate Trump to get his claws into him - or even why he'd want to, given Trump is initially shown as just a rent collector for his father's mid-level real estate business - or Trump having any deep conflict between following his ambitions with Cohn, or loyalty to his dysfunctional, old-fashioned family. Even Trump's father, Fred, is a relatively marginal figure considering the rumours of abuse, and his brother, Fred Jr, barely features despite reportedly being bullied into alcoholism by his family for becoming a pilot rather than following in his father's footsteps.

In other words, the movie skips over all the genuinely interesting early stuff which probably had a far greater impact on making Trump who he is today in favour of making him solely the product of Roy Cohn's one-dimensional guidance. I strongly dislike Trump as a person and political figure but there's clearly a lot of fascinating material to be mined from the life of a man who was once central to the rejuvenation of America's now greatest city and was the embodiment of the hyper-capitalistic 80s American dream, yet went on to represent for many the destructive end point of that ideal while becoming the country's leader. Instead of trying for a genuine study of the man, what his life says about America, about humanity and its impulses toward ambition and desire, it races to justify all the anti-Trump bullet points (throwing in a handful of those overused, always egregious meta-jokes, like Trump saying running for president is for losers) and attributing all his noteworthy modern characteristics to one man (who, in typically hackneyed fashion, only realises at the end, while seeing his own power and life slip away, that he CREATED A MONSTER) without justifying the telling of this story beyond drawing applause from a liberal-minded audience. Not being a Trump fan, I have no issue with the movie condemning the man, but like so much modern storytelling, it confuses demonstrating political alignment with having something to say and consequently turns out to be as crass and vapid as the man it seeks to condemn.
