Isn't 3 seasons a good place to stop if it ends though? At least it makes it up to the movies, and the next 4 seasons would have each matched up with a movie anyways, right?

Hannibal Constantine crossover show.

Constantine is the hero, Hanniball is the main bad guy.

The Red Dragon is literally a demon

How about if you watch On Demand? I assume the cable box is telling the provider?

Maybe, but those numbers don't typically determine network renew/cancellation decisions unless they are just undeniabl large. The main factors are live numbers and live+5 day DVR coverage, which are only registered by Nielsen boxes.

Fuller said next season was where they would start deviating from the film stories pretty radically.

I'd thank NBC but I just can't. Sorry.

Godfuckingdammit almighty. Best show ever on television. Above Twin Peaks. Above The Wire. Above True Detective. Masterwork.

It's not over until every streaming service and cable network passes on it. Someone has to pick it up--it's one of the best on TV, certainly was in the best of the best on network.

I'd say it'd be a huge get for Amazon, and a pretty big one for Netflix. I doubt Hulu or Yahoo would get it but if they did it'd be big for them too.

So much this.

Hasn't the most recent season always been there? I believe that Hulu gets whatever the current season is due to their large scale deal with NBC while Amazon has rights to all past seasons. I don't believe S1 or S2 are on Hulu Plus, which would sort of confirm that.
For some strange reason Hulu only has access to the show's latest season on PC and not streaming devices. That's currently not the case with this season.

This season will cover Red Dragon. Fuller had revised his original 7-year plan down to 5 or 6.

Oh. That's different from what he was saying back in season one, but I haven't been keeping tracked. I have yet to watch an episode this season although I have them PVR'd.

This is honestly the perfect show for AMC to pick up to rejuvenate their critical appeal niche after it has completely evaporated with the ending of Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

That or Showtime.

Next best scenario would be a streaming service like Amazon that is trying to make a splash in TV department.

Season 1 and 2 are awesome, some of the best TV I've seen in years. The first 3 episodes of season 3 however have been slow and boring, it's like a completely different show now.

That's probably more of a hiccup with Hulu Plus than anything. Since they didn't have rights to past seasons, they likely excluded it from Plus thus preventing mobile access, or something like that. I doubt the Amazon deal has changed.

Amazon is pretty much the only real safe bet. Unless the deal has some expiration tied to network TV or something, whoever picks it up would either have to share with Amazon or buy them out. I don't see anyone doing that. Netflix, for instance, already has enough large budget prestige shows made or coming and don't really need something as tangled up in rights issues as Hannibal.

I gotta say, it is really cool to see all the media sites/blogs/social media crying out "this is one of the best shows on TV, someone pick it up NOW".

HOPE

How's Aquarius doing, btw? They tried making that entire evening block work, plus Aquarius was doing a pretty neat digital version/TV version release.

Having that show's entire season online certainly didn't help matters for Hannibal (and it needed every viewer it can get).

Oh yeah, another thing that bugged me so far this season is the commercials have felt more and more intrusive and frequent. Maybe it has always been that way but it feels more abrasive this year and the constant interruptions really break the immersion and flow of the show.

So yeah, a streaming distributor would be the most ideal, as a network like AMC would still pepper it full of commercials.

Uuugh, hope this is just general melancholy about the announcement and not a "yep, we're definitely done" tweet.

I suppose now I will return to just being an idiot in real life.

It felt incomprehensibly, wonderfully crazy that any of it aired at all.
So assuming it was a collective dream, thanks for conjuring me. XO

EDIT: Finally read Fuller's statement. Sounds pretty hopeful to me, actually.

Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again.

So... is it possible that this could still air outside of America (UK, Europe, Asia) if a North American (or at least American) broadcast network isn't found?

How does NBC have the ability to cancel it if they aren't paying much for it?

NBC should be commended and really we all should be grateful for even getting 3 seasons of this show. Truth is this show has constantly had low ratings and only connected with a niche audience. Mads while being a brilliant actor, is hard to understand. I had to rewatch it with subtitles. Overall, this show is just too superb and intricate for its own good.

That said, from what I'm reading its not so hopeless, and should get picked up. I'll also get both its season blurays the next chance I get.

The show had great production value, great casting and great acting, but something about the show was just off for me. I was just really bored throughout the first two seasons and it just wasn't as engaging as I expected. I do enjoy intelligent shows and deep stories and character development, but this show just did not click with me. I can see this being a show on some streaming service though and expect it to survive.

It's unknown how much NBC really invests in the show. It could be a significant enough chunk to kill it if a replacement isn't found, but I doubt that.

As for canceling the show, the answer is opportunity costs. Even if Hannibal is relatively cheap, the low ratings hurt the ad money they can bring in. If they bring a new show and get significantly higher ratings, they make more money overall.

No anger towards NBC, they kept the series going for three seasons and I'm thankful for that.

If someone else picks it up, then great, I'd love to see more. But if they don't, well I hope for a nice resolution at the end of Season 3, and will remember it fondly as one of the most beautiful TV shows to grace the medium.

My thoughts exactly. Hopefully, not only will the show get picked up for a fourth season on a different channel, Fuller will get the rights to SotL. But that feels like asking for two miracles.

If the show doesn't get a fourth season, and this is all we get, then what a helluva show it's been. Amazing work by Fuller and cast/crew.

This. People in this thread are delusional. I love the show and think it's the best on TV, but if you think it's anything less than a miracle that they kept it around this long, you're crazy. The ratings have never been better than the low end of middling and the show is so gory and frankly disturbing that it puts to shame even the most shocking scenes on any cable or Netflix show. The fact that it was even ever on a network channel is fucking baffling to me.

Always a pain being in UK as it seems America viewing rating is only thing that matters. Shows being cancelled because of viewers from one country is bit narrow minded maybe companies should look outside box.

Still it insane we got 3 season so happy about that. It be weird if viewing figures jump up when Red Dragon arc starts as got to admit this season start has been wayyy to abstract

That Silence rumor doesn't make any sense. They've been talking about the possibility of alternatives the entire time it's been on air.

If the Clarice rights issue is at the root of the cancellation, then how is shopping the show around an option at all? Rights issues will be rights issues no matter who's distributing, no?

They have no leverage at NBC though. They haven't done well at all, so why go through all the hassle of getting those rights when they are making you no money.

Hannibal is/might be valuable to another company and, if so, would probably be willing to pay/negotiate a deal for the rights.

They need ad revenue from the U.S. to keep it going. Syndication alone to foreign markets won't pay the bills.

I'm a little confused as to why they cancelled it. It's not like there's any other show that they can air in the summer that would garner higher ratings is there? Unless they want the block to air repeats then they can fuck off. Hoping this gets picked up though. It's a seriously brilliant show.

Not surprised with the nonsense they've been showing this season. So artsy and confusing you scared off anyone new.

Granted, thought this was really cheap for them. Oh well.

I pray this gets picked up. I know Netflix is an easy answer to most problems like this, but surely it would be a good fit?

I was just telling my younger brother yesterday that NBC would be Cancelling the show any day now. Way too good of a show for NBC. Please, Netflix, Amazon, pick this up!

It's the Bryan Fuller curse... He makes great shows that people don't watch.

If Netflix or another cable channel doesn't pick it up, they're missing the chance to attain a built-in cult audience. Cable channels don't require as big a viewership number as network channels like NBC do, right? The Americans is entering its 4th season on FX with about 1 million viewers total.

Ignoring the rumored licensing issues, I assume it's just impossible to be an NBC advocate for it at this stage. It seemed like they were doing a big push with S3--more marketing/advertising, got great early reviews--but it didn't really pay off. Ratings are the worst they've been since S1, and it's not just because of the "artsy" turn in Season 3. Pretty sure the S3 premiere numbers were pretty bad, too.

They don't even have "well, at least the ratings weren't HORRIBLE" to stand on.

With last year's Friday time slot and then followed by this season's delay, I had a feeling this would happen. I honestly didn't expect S3 to happen at all but it surprisingly did.

Sadness and devastation i was one of the big fannibals. But you cant really be upset with NBC, i mean season 3 is weird as fuck, nobody does that on network tv with total shit ratings. I can only hope this finds a home somewhere that it will be appreciated.

Repeats would get better ratings.

It's probably necessary that they need some sort of American distributor.

I hope Amazon or Hulu don't get their dirty hands on this. It would be a disaster for this show.

This is a bad post. Amazon is home to one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the season and Hulu is ramping up their originals in a great way under new management.
