Next-gen Racing Graphics Face-off | (Next-gen means current-gen)

Back in the day, when you wanted to show power of the next gen console, you went for racing games. Just look GT2->GT3/4-> GT5.... or FM1->FM4....or MSR->PGR2->PGR4...or FH1->FH4. Leaps between generations were really huge.
Now however...GT7 is updated GTS, FH5 is updated FH4, current FM while having much better foliage, has much worse textures than FM7....WRC looks worse than Dirt Rally 2.0. New consoles have much more and faster memory than last gen, but texture wise, both FM and GT7 are actually laughable compated to last gen racer.
I mean seriously...current biggest games have track textures like this:

While Project Cars 2 on standard PS4 had those:

Yea I've been surprised how low res the textures are on FM, they are garbage. GT7s are better but yea I remember how super crisp they used to be, you'd think they could keep pushing fidelity in that aspect but nope we've actually gone backwards. Don't get me wrong theirs more blades of grass but you notice the poor textures underneath, and also the road surface should be super sharp as you're staring at it so often. Excited to see what Assetto Corsa Evo can bring in that regard. Hard to tell from the pics released but looking decent at least.

I have high hopes for Assetto Corsa EVO. It will be their core sim for the next 10 years so I think they will make sure to make it as future proof as possible.

really looking forward to assetto corsa 2, AC1 is great but there's so many mods and things to consider when setting it up it's like an entire platform.

Game from 2006 has shadows from cars, casted by headlights.

Why is this so difficult to do today? TDU SC has some shadows but not really, more like blobs but it looks better than nothing. EA's WRC 2023 had fuck all, The Crew Motorfest has none, the list can go on.

Yeah, TDU SC doesn't even have decent cubemaps on the cars and the draw distance is like an early Xbox 360 game. Not even gonna mention Driveclub weather effects not being matched in 10 years.

Its around that time, where deffered render become popular, which allows very detailed geometry for the whole scene, but dynamic light sources are very expensive. This is probably good old forward rendering

This whole generation has been disappointing graphically, with so many games falling below expectations. Also disappointed by GT7 on the Pro, running at such a lower native reslution. Forza Motorsport though was one of the biggest graphical flops being current gen only. It's not a bad looking game either, just shouldve been better ...same with gt7 ..wasting so many resources on native 4k and now rt reflections that couldve gone into shadows/gi and textures. Screen space reflections in racing games have never bothered me.

How's the Crew MotorFest? Im thinking about picking it up when I get the PS5 Pro. Looks like some nice upgrades are in the works.
I recently bought Motorfest. But I uninstalled it after 5-6 hours because it ended up feeling like a lesser version of Forza Horizon (and also because on PC it was capped to only 60 fps for some very strange reason, I guess because of technical debt).

It looks decent, and controls reminded me of Need for Speed compared to sim-cade. It's also nice to have variation through the flying and boating modes.

If you haven't played FH it's fine.

Edit: Post edited for fairness balance.

Yeah man, its decent, a bit messy in execution, the playlist idea and the voice acting is in the gutter. But the controls and the location are great and on the pro it looks really nice, cleaned it right up.

Motorfest looks great (one of the best looking games right now, after latest patch looking even slightly better than before) and also plays great, but... ONLY AFTER making changes to the controls settings (sensitivity etc) and setting EPS to "Sport" and TC to "Off". Changing controls settings makes it a completely different game, cars behave completely different and more natural. The default ones are just awful.

Edit: You can try my settings:

In "Difficulty settings":
* ABS - ON
* Traction Control - OFF
* EPS - Sports
* Anti-.. something (don't remember what it's called) support - OFF

In "Control settings":
* Linear - 15
* Dead zone - 0
* Highest - 85
* Sensitivity - 35
* Dynamic max lock - 50

Throttle and brakes:
* Linear - 20
* Dead zone - 0

WOW just tried these, night and day, thats incredible thanks for those.
A few racing games need something like this, another being F1.

Weirdly the PS5 Pro version of TCM is actually the best looking now, the PC version has no upscaling at all so some textures look a bit awkward now.

When I played PS5 base version last year I really thought that if they could combine both modes it would look amazing. Happy to see that what they did

I’ve been playing GT7 a bit lately. Visually I would give Forza the edge. The sense of speed in GT is still bad imho. I use the bumper view in GT because the view behind the car or the driver view just looks super slow. I use the view behind the car in Forza.

I appreciate that GT7 is more of a love of cars type experience, with cut scenes and dialogue about the cars and their history, but I wish I could skip most of it. I really don’t care about historic Japanese cars. I am also not liking how much busywork and menu traveling you have to do in the career mode. Constantly going to cafe and tune shop etc etc. It’s as bad as Forza Horizon even though they present it in the polar opposite manner, with Horizon being all festival and zoomer and far out bro and GT7 getting high off their own farts while you watch a video about a 65 *insert British car here*.

And what is with all the roulette shit in GT7? Bizarre. And damn they are stingy with credits. Must want to entice people to the PS Store (it even says it on the credits screen, “top off on the PS Store 🤮).

GT7 in VR is spectacular though. Weird question but does the Pro make VR better or nah not really?

Couldn't agree more about the menu traversing BS in GT7 and the utterly reduculous stinginess of that fuxking roulette wheel lol ....I've NEVER once received the "good" prize always the worst one...are they trolling us with that or what?

I am disappointed with ACE EA, the current car list and overall experience is not good. The menu is buggy, setting up the wheel is frustating, the FFB feels weird and not as good as AC or ACC. The game runs smooth and looks good (nothing to crazy) but there are areas in ACC that look better. Car models are solid, the interior quality is really good, everything is almost perfectly smooth and round. Overall there is still alot to improve and this is EA so im hoping for major improvements, specially on the physics and FFB side.

Also the controller support is pretty good, it felt nice and you can feel what the car is doing.
