Hey, not sure where to put this kind of thing since the meta "GAF on GAF" thread was closed but, I would really like if we updated the CSS of the site so that the main forum content (basically, everything besides header/footer) has a max-width of about 1024px (or something).

Right now, reading GAF on a large-display, say 27+ in., is kind of annoying because text of posts stretches across the entire screen.

Make your browser window the size you want instead of forcing everyone else to an arbitrary width. Or get a second monitor and put it in portrait mode.

Why are you advocating for a user to have to do repeated work every time they visit the site to accommodate a design? The underlying assumption is that no one prefers to read prose from left to right by turning their head, or keeping their head in a turned position for a prolonged period. If you want someone to look at something for a long period of time -- center it so that they can look at it without turning their head. Most websites do this. This is a forum so it makes sense to optimize for reading.

If you disagree with this, why?

Because I can make my window size whatever I want. Which works perfectly for me. I don’t want an arbitrary limit. I want ultra wide reading. I want a single line of text to take minutes to complete.

Don't know where else to ask, not big enough to make a topic.

For those who own both a PS5 and SX, which of the two is generally the better blu ray movie player? I have never watched a BR movie on either before so not really sure, but don't want to spend too much time fiddling back and forth.

I like dynamic resizing. Static sizes belong with Netscape.

lol. Personally I just stopped using GAF on my gaming desktop because I wasn't the biggest fan of ultra wide reading.

What is “dynamic resizing”? I am not advocating for the page to stop being responsive, just that there should be a max-width for larger screens. This would actually make the site's design more responsive because it accounts for larger screens.

Tapatalk, for instance, is another forum that has better responsive styling than GAF currently does IMO. There is a max-width for larger screen sizes, and for smaller screen sizes they actually do this nice thing where a user's profile is shrunk and placed above their post's content. This makes sense because at smaller sizes the horizontal space becomes precious and it doesn't make sense to use so much of it for a profile picture.

To me this simple change makes Tapatalk much more readable than GAF on my desktop display.

There are also...other..forums that have a smaller max-width for post content than GAF. Alas, I guess if no one shares my opinion I will just continue to prefer GAF on mobile.

I can make the text container as wide or as narrow as I want by resizing the window. It's more flexible that way.

This argument makes no sense. You either resize the window to make it smaller and don't exceed my proposed max-width, or your window size is greater than the max-width and you are experiencing "ultra wide" reading as MV put it. The first case would not change with a max-width, so it's irrelevant. To advocate against my proposal, you have to advocate for ultra wide reading.

How does that not make sense? Depending on what I'm doing and what other applications are open, I might want the window narrow or wide. If the text container is fixed-width, I can't change that.

Yep. My web browser window constantly resizes depending on what I am doing. Threads like the Rabdom pic one would force scale down some of the larger images and so on. I actually really enjoy that there is complete user control in the reading experience.

I used to always max out my windows back in the day. Now, too often I have either a video playing, music going, or a windowed game going while I bounce between applications.

I believe early gen reviews said the PS5 had better UHD and HD Blu-ray playback. My own experience, PS5 was slightly sharper, Xbox won’t or has trouble reading some 100GB discs like the LOTR movies.

Thanks, been watching some Twin Peaks. Decided to use the PS5. No issues so far.

We're talking past each other - I never once mentioned a fixed-wdith. A max-width is not a fixed-width.

That's great, I imagine this is true for most people. A max-width would not effect any of these other cases you mention. As I said in my previous post, there are only two cases. Your window size can only be smaller than the max-width, or great enough to trigger it. It makes no sense to argue against a max-width for post content by talking about cases where you have chosen to shrink your browser window to have multiple applications on the screen at once, because nothing changes in these cases. But now I'm just repeating myself.

I also want the inverse to be true. Your arbitrary limit is your preference not mine. I don’t care if the text keeps going. Not even slightly.

Design is all subjective preference, saying that it is means nothing. Someone decided that profile pictures on this site should be square with rounded corners, used orange as the highlight color, chose all the fonts, etc.

The question is which design is better? The one that makes reading slower (as you said yourself above) and less ergonomic or the one that makes it faster and more ergonomic? There is a reason most modern websites have a max-width. Open a Tapatalk forum and try it out for yourself. It’s much easier to read. Forums should make it easy to read posts at any screen size.

It is if I want to make it wider than max width.

And when would you want to do that?

I like the PS 5 because of the remote and because I don't have to constantly swap inputs when watching a High Def bluray.
Could be my setup, but I have a nice multiplexer and the xbx is the only hardware that I have to re-handshake with to get a good hdr image on.

My physical movie collection has not grown significantly last year and I expect the same downward spiral in 2025, which means i will rely on plex or jellyfin for all my digital stuff

Bros, I’m so many hours deep in DEI training videos, first one started with a bald dude wearing earrings and a dress. I’d ask for prayers but that would be a problematic action.
Take a shot when a straight old white dude is the antagonist in all these training videos.

Whelp, the clock has hit midnight, the snow has stopped so I guess I might as well clear the snow from the driveway before it freezes in the morning and becomes harder to scrape off.

I fucking hate snow.

I should probably get a temporary time-out (ban) for my recent behavior. If I do, I'll take my consequence. I don't have any excuse except to say that I'm sick and tired of tiptoeing around the blatant fucking hypocrisy of some of the members of this forum and my internal bullshit filter has reached maximum capacity.

?

Took a quick glance at your recent posts, nothing there stands out ban worthy to me.
