Nintendo wants mature games & JP 3rd parties slow to react

I just don't get the Vita comparison

Was Vita capable of Unreal Engine 4 games like the current-gen consoles are? Then why is Switch getting this distinction?

Metroid is kind of weird in that it has this legacy status as one of the NES OG franchises that makes it sort of a face of Nintendo along with its more popular counterparts, Mario and Zelda. But at the same time it just doesn't have the sales to back that up. I know the whole point of this thread is that Nintendo is courting mature gamers, but I don't know to what degree they'd want to turn up the violence and gore for what many view as a core franchise.

So instead of an iconic character turned dark, perhaps an existing dark character who's relatively recognizable being given their own mature game with Nintendo's trademark charm?

Point out a third party developed-and-published game in the last 20 years that Nintendo has censored anywhere in the world.

Heck, didn't Nintendo of America publish Conker's Bad Fur Day? And ironically Microsoft censored the Xbox remake - swears were bleeped out among other changes.

another day another nintendoomed thread.

to be honest third parties are leaving money on the table and indies are gobbling it up. thats fine with me as some of the indie games were truly amazing

Nah this can't happen. Switch is not getting any games.

Switch owners are bound to starve.

The only third party Switch is getting is Just Dance.

Maybe it makes third parties reluctant to work with a publisher that censors their own releases on the regular.

Many including myself thought mature meant thought provoking themes, maybe in with the flexibility to raise the age bar up, not specifically wanting sexy tease games and such. I'm not surprised about the latter, but it's always welcome to see the former.

It's pretty obvious that they mean M rated games.

More variety never hurts, change their image to be modern and up to date on what can be allowed and skies the limit. Reminds me of when they took more chances during the GC days strangely enough.

Can't imagine why they would work with Sony then, since they did ask for changes to be made in games like Killer7 and BMX XXX that Nintendo didn't.

I doubt it since nintendo has actively encouraged and supported 3rd parties sometimes when it comes to mature content

What? How? Makes no sense to me. Most of the "censorship" cry is exaggerated too, like people complaining we can't see a plot about sexual conversion therapy in a Fire Emblem game.

Let's also pretend they're trying to stop things like this with the Switch, with Takahashi stating that the japanese studios work with NoA and NoE to offer the same product to all regions now.

The Switch is actually selling and isn't abandon by its creator. The Switch is everything the Vita wished it was and the stench of failure doesn't follow the Switch around. No it's not.

I think if Nintendo wants to shed its finally friendly only image they will need to develope a Mature rated ip of their own and show it sells to better attract 3rd party Mature titles.

But a system is not only defined by it's sales ...but what games where on the system.
When people say it's the new Vita there mean the Indies and the Japanese RPGs from NIS etc.

Aside from reduced portability, battery life, and Nintendo's backwards account system...

I can fit my switch in my pants pocket, battery life has always depended on the game and most games on the switch right now arent battery munchers, nintendo account is just like every other account right now....

Hopefully, but the #FE debacle didn't set what I'd call a good precedent.

I doubt I could bring a Switch to work as easily as I could a Vita. But I guess we'll see whenever NMH3 comes out.

That’s what I like to hear. This has always been one of Nintendo’s weakest areas. So to hear them wanting to seriously change that is great. I hope this means Nintendo themselves are doing something like this woththeir first party.

Retro studios making an m rated game like eternal darkness or some sort of shooter would be a good step.

They should drive a dump truck full of cash up to From Software and get them to port Dark Souls. They might have to cut down the graphics in DS3 a bit but shouldn't the first two games run okay on Switch hardware?

Maybe get more in touch with independent developers? Seriously, 2nd-party-development endeavors have worked before and there are tons of highly talented studios out there who would a) love to have a reliable financing partner and b) work with Nintendo of all people.

I'm pretty sure there is someone among Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Flying Wild Hog, Sumo Digital, IO Interactive etc. who would sell their firstborn for a contract with them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's clear that they want Vita's audience and games, which really have nowhere else to go. When are they releasing the first Switch otome games?

Some people really desperate to shit on Nintendo, huh? Even going so far as to try to redefine widely-accepted and understood industry terms.

they need a big, m rated, western audience oriented exclusive shooter to prove to third parties that the audience exists

grand theft auto v is about to become the highest selling video game of all time. it's basically the Thriller of video games: if you own a video game console, you own grand theft auto. it's time we stop acting like having a game like gta hurts nintendo in any way. the market has spoken: those are they games they want.

Kinda figured this was happening, Nintendo wants in on the traditional gamer again.

I agree, they should make an open world role playing game or a sci-fi shooter, or even a few fighting games.
I can’t tell if this response was Sarcastic. Nintendo has all of these which came out or coming this year...?? Xenoblade, Splatoon and Pokken...

Oh, you mean like how Nintendo fams used to shit on the Vita and it's games? But now they want their new machine to be a Vita? They used to call the games "creepy" and "cringeworthy" but now can't wait for them to be on the Switch. Hypocrites!

I doubt very much that you can point to any one group of people hating on the "Vita games" as favoring one fan base over another. Apparent creep factor knows no console bias.

Pretty much. Good to see some third party support this year. But to really nail it they need to do something themselves and not just as a publisher with a contract.
Though even then stuff like NMH is a good step forward over nothing at all.

The RPG I’ll give you. Can’t see Nintendo doing bigger than that. Even if they don’t like JRPGs with that anime aesthetic. The fighting game I think is a bit worthless. Not a fan of pokken but Smash is coming and looking at any of the big 3. None of them really have a first party traditional fighter outside MS with KI.

The shooter aspect is the one where I think Nintendo could do better though. Yeah you can count splatoon sure. But that doesn’t really fit with someone wanting “mature”.

At least Bethesda has Doom and Skyrim to cover an aspect of that persons argument. But as above. I’m on board for Nintendo themselves to really push an M rated shooter or other series here in the west.

I'm okay with this.

I have Nights of Azure 2 and DooM preordered actually. Also got Binding of Isaac and will be getting RE:R Collection.

So at the very least I'm trying to support M rated games. :p

Also people in this thread are really trying to whine that ecchi games are somehow a different type of M than like Doom or GTA because it's "Immature"? Hate to break it to you, but stupid heavy violence in Doom and a lot of themes in GTA would also be considered immature to a lot of people too. Myself included. ;P

this is how console fanboys act in general lol

game is exclusive to platform they don't own: "eh that don't look so great"

game comes to platform they are fanboy of: "OMG MEGATONS I PRE ORDER DAY ONE"

it's how people are
