Nothing from Sony or Nintendo either. This does not paint a good picture. Console gaming is already in dire straits and the lack of celebration for black friday sales is not encouraging.
It also doesn't make sense to say they're waiting for NPD, since it has become completely irrelevant due to it not tracking downloads.

Nah. It's less relevant than it was in 2008...but it still captures like 75-90% of total software sales depending on the title. That's not "completely irrelevant" status.
The day NPD becomes irrelevant is the day that the good majority of console software sales occur through digital platforms...that's just not the case in 2014. Maybe 10 years from now.
And, it will always be relevant for hardware + accessory sales.
But I agree that no PR from Microsoft is concerning...not in a "Microsoft might not have won Black Friday" sense, but in a "Black Friday sales might have underwhelmed relative to Microsoft's expectations and they're disappointed" sense.
