Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

Exactly. I feel like it's a case of "He has horrible ideas, so we can call him any awful thing we can come up with!"

He DOES have horrible ideas. But the "white supremacy" thing is far fetched.

"He's not a racist, he just financially supports a racist group!"

I can't keep up with your mental gymnastics.

People have opinions. He has his.

Completely unrelated, how is the tech? Good, I'll buy it. Something better like the Vive or PSVR then I wont?

Politics don't have anything to do with it.

He is the face of the Rift. His politics have everything to do with it.

Well, I mean... Being labeled a white supremacist is a pretty big deal, and in an entire other league than "simply" being "racist". Point being, there's enough here already to question his character. Maybe it'd be best if people were a little more prudent in specifically throwing these types of labels around when there is still a shadow of a doubt. Regarding the whole supremacy thing specifically, that is.
On principal I can agree with you but for something like this fuck that!

We have an influential rich seemingly racist person trying to help elect another rich influential extremely racist person to the most powerful position in the word where he will help not only shape policy and law but also public opinion, validating his horrific views and causing untold harm to millions of specific groups of people for generations to come.

But we need to worry about what kind of racist label we use for him?

How about we instead focus on what a cunt palmer and trump and every other person like them are and prevent them discriminating people based on racist, ignorant beliefs first.

spreads hate memes using Pepe, an icon of white supremacists

I didn't know that this was a thing... : ( Huge bummer, as Boy's Club is an amazing comic.

Also, fuck Palmer. Time for your awkward, ignorant ass to shuffle into obscurity. Forever. Bye.

That's not what this thread is about.

If I buy his product, he makes more money. If he makes more money, he will likely use it to support his political beliefs that are the antithesis to mine.

See how it's not really that unrelated?

But they do when they're using proceeds from the tech to fund their idiotic, hateful, destructive enterprises.

"That Hitler dude made a good app. Sure, he burned a few Jews, but I'll keep subscribing to SS Music Streaming because the tech is good, and DJ Goering really kills it at the 2AM slot"

This is mental gymnastics he's not being labelled a white supremacist. He was discovered funding a white supremacist website. The only contention is whether you consider Nimble America white supremacist website or not and I don't know many people willing to die on that hill. The thread title is not labelling Palmer anything people are making logical jump based off the information should it prove to be correct but any assumptions are on you.

Financially backing and funding Nimble America which has made and popularized pro-trump white supremacist and anti-semitic memes and ads?

It's right in the OP.

What I read in the OP is that Nimble America was founded by Luckey and 2 other folks that had worked on popularizing pro-trump white supremacist crap.

Not that Nimble America was doing this and it's goal was to support Trump through shit posting and meme's.

I'm just trying to understand this. I don't agree with any of this shit, but unless I'm reading this wrong (could be) I see him being called guilty by association.

Supporting Trump (I don't) doesn't equal racist. Associating yourself with racists is a terrible idea, but also doesn't equal racist.

Some people don't seem to understand what 'white supremacy' is.

This election cycle has turned mildly stupid into full blown loons. I can't stand looking at the vitriolic shit posts in off topic anymore and what am I greeted with today. Off topic leaking into games.

I've been working on a VR game for Oculus and felt a bit uncomfortable about all this and didn't know how to react.

So I made the player's hands 60% smaller in the Oculus version so Donald can achieve presence.

Trolls are even more aware of how to make stuff look legit with a quick delete. "What can I do to make this seem more real?" is meme magic in itself.

I mean I imagine we'll hear something shortly but I am super sceptical about this. Luckey would be confirmed the biggest fucking online idiot in a long time if it is true.

Indeed.

Re the validity of the source, I don't imagine it would have been picked up by such big publications if there wasn't confirmation somewhere, even if verbal.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
So this has made it as far as the Guardian now as well so... I guess it's looking to be true?

What a monumental cretin. What an absolute shit-for-brains moron. Being a billionaire and thinking putting money into 4chan offshoot insanity and then going public about it to risk everything you've built and made. All those relationships jeopardised. The lawsuit from Zenimax also now has the perfect "Look he's obviously too stupid to live let alone invent VR" angle.

I'd called him an idiot before publicly but good god. Affluenza is real as Notch went mental as well, but I guess Palmer's idiot youth made things even more turbo charged.

It does matter. When you are giving money to somebody who can then, in turn, use said money to devalue and hurt the lives of a segment of the population, that makes you part of the problem.

It's impossible to police every company, but when something like this comes up and hits you in the face, and is so obvious, it makes it easier to move on to other products or not buy at all.

So you base your electronics-tech purchases on political issues?

He is the face of the Rift. His politics have everything to do with it.

When someone funds a charity I think highly of them. That they are generous caring people, who care about a particular cause.

When someone finds white supremacists, I am going to think poorly of them, and assume they care about white supremacist causes.

I really don't think that's some leap of logic.

Don't want people thinking you're a white supremacist? Don't use your millions to fund white supremacists

So you base your electronics-tech purchases on political issues?

What kind of response is this? This isn't a "political issue". The dude is funding hate speach. That's an issue everyone should give a shit about

Noneo that doesn't harbour similar views with a caise on some level financially supports them unless forced. If you funded ISIS would actually tell me with a straight face that you have no similar beliefs what do ever as their cause?

Memes? Like image macros and shit? That's some real passive aggressive political activism. If came came out in support of Trump that would be bad enough but to do it by asking people to work their "meme magic" is just so sad.

Well I'm voting for Donald, (is it a surprise I'm a deplorable?) .. does that mean that everybody who votes for him agrees with all his policies, or that everybody who buys a Rift support racism?

Supporting Trump means your ok with his racist views. I'm sorry...but what other substantial argument has he made in his campaign other than fueling racist bigot fires? He gained popularity by talking about building walls and making America great again.

Please..if you're not supporting Trump based off the person he is and the comments and policies he plans to put forth...what is one actually supporting? I'd love to hear it.

Ok, strike the Political description. I'm still trying to figure out what this has to do with the newest hottest and latest VR Tech or Rift news. Seems like this is a discussion for debate class, or OT section.

"Before they can reach the American Dream, many migrant women have to survive a Mexican nightmare. Before they can reach the American Dream, many migrant women have to survive a Mexican"

Yeah, not racist at all. "Don't travel through Mexico or you'll be raped by Mexicans because they can't control themselves."
Give me a fucking break, dude.

Want to try again and debate me using what I actually said instead of a strawman with a nametag on it?

I'll try again, simplified. Let's completely take donald trump out of the equation.

Palmer financially backed a group that uses anti-black memes and anti-semetic jokes.

And again, what this has to do with VR... If I buy an OR, I give Palmer money, Palmer then uses that money to support something I don't agree with. THAT is the problem. THAT is why this discussion is allowed here on gaming side.

Then leave the thread. You don't have to talk about it.

This is seriously going to impact perception and response to oculus. If someone at Sony came out as being a racist shitbag, there would also be a thread

This... if the only goal is to not support Hillary, there are other options out there.

If you're asking me, ANY vote not for Clinton is a vote for Trump. I know people will decry the two party system and say they shouldn't have to vote for the lesser of two evils, but it's the way the game is set up and you have to play the game. Otherwise true evil wins.

Well the joke is on you if you don't think about your beliefs and what you are really supporting in the long run before you purchase things.

Luckey's generally unpleasant views have been known for a while, but this is on a whole other level.

Secretly funding a white supremacist website is next level fucked. That goes beyond political speech into political action. Action that is in favour or the very worst racism, sexism, and other bigotry.

Having this guy get bankrolled for life off of other people's money already sucked, but this is just an extra kick in the teeth.
