I do want one. But not at $200 / ¥29,980 JPY

I legitimately would get to play more if I had one.

I will wait a bit for the price to come down.

People who travel rarely leave video game consoles in stand by mode. Or leave the router on for that matter. If you’re going away for anything other than a short period, you turn all that shit off.

And fuck me, if you’re travelling, you want something you can play while you’re travelling. Try using that stupid fucking thing 38,000 feet up.
I travel a lot and I always leave all my stuff on standby and I don't turn the router off. I must be doing it wrong.

Either way, remote play to a console at home when I'm away sucks because I have cable internet and they limit upstream bandwidth to 20 Mbps. I wish I had fiber internet here.

Since when did Remote Play, which is even more niche than cloud gaming, suddenly have broader appeal? This is news to me.

You wanna know what has real broad appeal? A portable PlayStation that can natively play PS1, PS2, and PS4 games on the go AND Remote Play & cloud stream PS5 games.

That's actual broad appeal. Not whatever PlayStation Portable is.

I dont disagree that a true playstation portable would have been 100x better and sold much better. But in the absence of that, this has a place in the market.
Two big things ot may have going for it is locally a lack of latency and actually controllers that don't suck.

Let's throw in PSP, PS3 and Vita libraries and I am prepared to pay $500! 😅

Yeah if this thing connected directly via Wi-Fi w/o a router, they'd have just said so in the blog lol

PS Link is an audio tech. The only thing it has to do with the Portal is that the Portal includes the ability to connect to a PS Link device (headset/earbuds) w/o a dongle.

Sony choosing to market all of this at once seems to be causing some confusion with people talking to reps, but the blog is pretty clear on this.

Im referring to my own experience with remoteplay over 2 decades. There are still people who think you can only use it at home.

like i said. I played Destiny 8+ years ago on an PSTV at my girls house back then, while my PS4 was at my home….50 km away in standby mode.

I went with the app since I was out of town. I haven't done the PC version yet but I know some people use it to cheat trophies like some weirdo losers.
Alright brother, I gave it a shot and figured I'd get back to you.

So, I tried it on my PC downstairs as the wife is playing Persona 5 upstairs, so I don't currently have access to the room with the PS5. That being said, hoooolllllyyyyy shit what an improvement. Never let it be said that I won't eat crow when it's served, and goddamn this service kicks ass now.

I put it through the pace with something that would test the input lag, if maybe not the visual fidelity a great deal, but responsiveness is mostly what I'm concerned with when streaming. Throughout the entirety of the tutorial of Tokyo Jungle, (one of my favorites and if you've played it then you know, the tutorial's minutely hefty), and there were three incredibly minor hitches that didn't affect controls at all, and I mean not at all.

I can't put into words how different this is from the experience when I just tried it six months ago. Now, again, I need to test it on the PS5 upstairs too, but so far the PC app is amazing, and I can't believe I haven't been playing it more often. This is a major improvement, no, it's a gargantuan improvement from what it was, and I'm now utterly convinced. I no longer hate the idea of this Playstation Portal at all, and I'm saying this as someone who loved their Vita and still would have preferred a true follow up to that, but PS Plus's streaming capabilities are pretty damn impressive on PC at least.

I'll try a snappy PS5 title to really put it through the paces and see what this service can do. Impressed so far for sure.

Considering that this thing by itself is meant to go with the PS5 the basic price isn't even 200 dollars as much as it is 600 in the same way that a PSVR2 without a PS5 is basically 900 dollars.

So if we're talking that way, you might as well get a Steam Deck or ROG Ally.

What logic.

Adding console cost to an optional accessories total cost.

Like saying you need a Switch to play Nintendo Labo the total cost is over 350 dollars for cardboard.

Key Notes from Previews:

  • Portal has a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a small set of speakers that are passable but nothing special. There is no Bluetooth available, so you won’t be able to connect to wireless headphones that way – not even PlayStation’s own Pulse 3D headset.
  • Portal doesn’t run anything locally, not even basic apps. So if your Wi-Fi goes down or if someone else wants to use your PS5, it’s not going to work
  • The device has a 60Hz, 8-inch LCD display. PlayStation says this size is the sweet spot for long gaming sessions, keeps text legible and won't leave the player feeling like they're downgrading.
  • The Portal is light, probably somewhere between a Switch and a Steam Deck.
  • Games like Astro's Playroom and Returnal plays like playing directly on the PS5 console.
  • No lag experienced when playing games (by previewers)
  • No definitive battery life was given but the company is targeting something similar to the DualSense controller's,

Cool accessory.

Will wait for more hands-on reviews on lag. That will determine if I buy or not as I'm only buying it for the bedroom. If it works flawlessly it's a great option for me instead of buying another PS5 for the bedroom.

If it can still maintain a stable connection when other devices are playing R roblox or binging @hulu or @netflix then it meets my needs otherwise I’ll return it.

Mate what is this? You buy the controller for the console, not the other way around. This is nothing but a controller.

Absolutely stunning to see everyone scramble for excuses now it’s sub 200 ,

Day one

The headsets are planar magnetic too which is an awesome surprise

Scramble for excuses?? Have you read this thread - not a lot of excuses or positive feedback from what I can gather

My PS5 is in the living room, and I've been using remote play to play my PS5 on my tablet when in bed. It's a surprisingly good experience for single player games. Was using it to clear up hunts in FFXVI.

Replacing the tablet + wire + controller with a single device sounds like a good upgrade for me.

I'm tempted but my wallet says wait for price drop.

What a piece of shit. Did they really learn nothing from the mistake that Nintendo faced with the Wii U?
Most casual consumers are just going to assume it's a standalone handheld.

About 300$ CAD with taxes factored in

yikes.

I wasn’t going to get it personally but it’s a bit disappointing given its lack of features (not even cloud support :()

Why can’t they throw a low grade GPU for PS3 and the entire PSN for that gen? You’d have 3 generations of console games on there and maybe even a 4th? A part of me feels like the new PS doesn’t care about the past PS. If they do, they want to be very selected about what gets brought over or what’s BC. Even if you look at what’s brought over, 50% of it feels like they get it. It’s neat and I’d love to use it. I like being in front of my TV since that was quite a lot of money. I just wonder how many Sony accounts there are with PS3/Vita/PSP games. We are in a digital age. There seems to be a lot of shovelware on PSN these days.

The name is a mouthful, should have stuck with something snappy like Project Q.
You can't be serious, they needed to name it something short yea but project Q says nothing about the device. Playstation handheld, Playstation wireless, Playstation untethered. Something like that would have been much better.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Something like that

Playstation Portal itself is decent, the other words after that can be chopped.

That's a bit too pricey IMO. I didn't expect it to be cheap.
I mean a Dualsense controller is pretty expensive on its own but that screen is definitely not worth the difference.

Hard pass for anything surrounding remote play. It doesn't matter how good it is, it is virtually impossible to not have inherent input delay which takes most twitchy games out of the picture. I'm sure there's a market for it but seems like a lazy Sony device.

Strange product, imo. Seems like quite a hard sell to me. Must surely be a gamble for Sony, I almost wonder if this is an experiment that ended up working better than they expected and they've decided to do a limited run and see if people respond to it.

I wouldn't be surprised if this sells out.

So this can’t cloud stream PS+ games so it sure as hell doesn’t support streaming utilities like moonlight and you won’t be able to play any gamepass cloud games with out of the box defaults.

Meaning it’s completely closed and only features some sort of proprietary remote play app.

So the only way this would be useful for I suspect a lot of people, myself included, is if the thing can be jailbroken.

I use my steam deck at the moment almost exclusively for home streaming via moonlight/sunshine. It works amazingly well. So this product does interest me as it’s a little bigger screen, higher res and much more comfortable controller.

No side loading apps is going to be the nail in the coffin though. I’m 100% sure it’ll be modded/jailbroken though.

It seems like the sole purpose is to get people to invest in the proprietary headset and buds. No Bluetooth!!! Probably upping your total to $300-$400 when all is said and done.
Awful!!! Throw it out to die like the VR headset. Why does Sony even bother?

They have to know this won't sell well at all. They didn't even put Bluetooth. 99.99% of people who use a device like this, use it wearing headphones.

People saying it would be good for times when the wife or kids are sleeping, but then they can't wear headphones? (Does it even come with a 3.5 headphone jack?)

The reason this thing is $200 is because they dared to sell the Dualsense Edge at $200, and of course they won't sell this cheaper. I wonder if the DS Edge has been selling well (I would imagine is not) because it's too expensive.

DS should cost $120 at most and this thing should cost $149 at most with the lack of bluetooth, OLED and apparently even an OS.

Will it sell worse than the PlayStation Mini? Place your bets!

PlayStation Portal remote player

PlayStation Portal remote player brings the PS5 experience to the palm of your hand. It includes the key features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback*. The vibrant 8-inch LCD screen is capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps, providing a high definition visual experience that’s expected from the high quality games created by world-class developers.

PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi**, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal. PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller. It also includes a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio. PS VR2 games, which require the headset, and games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported.*

Which means you can probably just get a 3.5BT transmitter adapter and connect Bluetooth headphones to it. That's an easy and cheap workaround. I believe that was necessary for switch early on. It will probably have the same latency but it's a $15 solution

Without cloud support and Bluetooth this device is useless. Might as well get the Logitech cloud (or whatever they call it) for my portable gaming needs. Who thought this was even a remotely good idea? Not supporting the original official PS5 headphones. Anti consumer PlayStation is back with a passion.

Yah I switch off the plug to my non-essential electric stuffs that I am not using when I go oversea. I don’t want any risk of some blackout occurring which kills my electronic gadgets or tv when I am away. Of course not including stuffs like router or NAS since the rest of my family uses them, but they don’t play consoles or use the tv in my room

Exactly, people should know what they are talking about...

You don't even need a Router in your house to use this....

The device can make a direct wireless connection (Playstation Link) with the PS5 console while you are in your house

Pretty sure that’s not the case. PS Link is only for connecting from Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore to PS5/PC/Max/PS Portal.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore can simultaneously connect to a PlayStation Link supported device (PS5, PC, Mac, or PlayStation Portal) and a Bluetooth supported device. For example, Pulse Explore can be connected to PS5 (via the USB adapter) using PlayStation Link and also to a mobile phone through Bluetooth at the same time. While playing on PS5, gamers can instantly answer a call and hear it through the same Pulse Explore earbuds.

The last question I know a lot of people are wondering is, who exactly is this device for? It's $200 for a remote-access window into your PS5. At that price, honestly, I kinda get it. The Portal is unlikely to be someone's primary way to play PS5 games – that's what your TV is for. But for times when someone else wants to use the TV, or maybe you have small kids in the home and don't want to put God of War on the big screen, and maybe you just want to be able to play in a different room without buying another full-on TV. In that scenario, the Portal offers a compelling use case. And while it's not quite as portable for on-the-go gaming as a Switch or Steam Deck, it's less expensive and it does let you keep playing your PS5 while out of the house, so long as your destination has decent internet connectivity. You just probably shouldn't count on hotel Wi-Fi being strong enough to handle the connection.

That is a very small target audience. I don't think it will pull some sizable numbers until or unless people find some other use out of it.

and we laughed at the Nintendo WiiU…
Didn't the Wii U have better streaming tech than Sony ever did?

It was flawless as it was really locally steaming.

I have had different modems/routes and fast internet and Sony's remote play always sucked for me so if Sony is still using the same old Remote Play tech I'm not buying.
