[Pure Xbox] We rated Indiana Jones and the Great Circle 6/10, but it is our GOTY 2024 (by our readers)

Once again it proves how detached those "gaming journalists" are from actual players.

Considering their readers are xbox fans/fanboys it's not surprising. Good game though from what i've heard and seen of it.

What has Xbox released other than Indy and HB2
Flight Sim, and technically, Black Ops 6.
Outside of those nothing is coming to mind.

EDIT: Ara: History Untold was also this year from Xbox Game Studios but it was PC only

EDIT 2: Also forgot about Diablo and Starfield expansions. Still, a weaker year for sure.

Is this really a good game or just the graphics are hyping it up?
Graphics are really not the star of the show at all. It's just a really well done game that hits a certain itch you rarely get these days. It's basically The Forgotten City x Indiana Jones movies, with a dash of action and stealth on the side. Lot of talking to people, slowly exploring, referencing your journal and handheld map. Tomb exploration feels like actual tombs. Presentation is about as close as you can get to the movies, but it's also 1st person. Very unique game. After all that, I'd mention it also looks pretty great.

i'd have to agree with the 6/10 rating. The gameplay just isn't there for me. I did a few of the missions in Egypt and dropped it.

I've tried really hard not to diss on this game since I haven't played it....but have you all not considered that releasing a game right before or during voting is going to give it an outsized number of votes. It's called recency bias. Do you perhaps think this could have an effect and perhaps there should be a gap between eligibility and voting in order to combat it?

I'll give you an example. Indiana Jones was too late to TGA this year, no?

Do you think it will win goty next year then? I'd argue it has no shot, not because it is bad, but because it will have released so long ago by then. Again, time between release and voting would be a key factor imho.

Most games have a honeymoon period and if you asked us to rate it then, it would be a 10/10. Only after a game is over and we've had time to consider it, can we truly be an accurate judge.

you guys are quite the clown show. If they didnt like the game, then it is what it is. Why the fuck do you people care about some irrelevant "journalistic" opinion piece? Fucking lol.

That's easy dude. Follow this simple formula and you can ease your mind without all this stress.

MS game = overrated, honeymoon period, should be disqualified just to make sure
Sony game = GOTY

It's not about being detached from regular gamers. A gaming journalist is just another gamer with an opinion and personal taste in games, just like any of us here. A critic's opinion isn't worth more or less or is more correct or more wrong than regular gamers opinions. It's literally just one opinion. The only distinct difference from regular gamers like us is that a game critic gets paid to write down his opinion on a game while we do it for free here on GAF.

For me it's a rare 10 and the GOTY just like for the readers there. Absolutely loved it.

For someone else it could be a 5. Valid opinion too. It all depends what types of games you like and if you can deal with first person perspective and the often slow speed and most importantly if you're a fan of Indiana Jones or not. Like I don't personally think someone who don't like the old movies would rate it over 8. The fan service is definitely a big bonus. I guess it's kinda like how Astro Bot is for PlayStation fans. Lots of the good things that got me smiling would fly over the heads of those not as deeply interested.

What has Xbox released other than Indy and HB2

Indy can be both GOTY and a 6/10 simultaneously if cross platform stuff isn't included
Hellblade 2
Indiana Jones and The Great Circle
Flight Simulator 2024
Call of Duty Black Ops 6
Age of Mythology Retold
ARA History Untold
Towerborne
Diablo 4 Expansion
Starfield Expansion

Not sure if one considers STALKER 2 from Xbox, even though Xbox money hatted timed (or permanent now?) exclusivity.

Whatever the score, it looks like my kind of game and ill buy on ps5.
Apart from some janky combat, it does not look like it deserves an 6/10

It's at least an 8/10.
Usually when I see outlier scores I just assume they're doing it for clicks at the cost of harming their site reputation in the long run (if it still has one, most usually don't eg Kotaku)

I'm playing it right now.
I don't know about the rest of the game, but after about 5 hours, it's National Treasure-meets-Thief.
If that sounds like something you want to play, you're all good with this one.

That copium.

MS game=not usually rated good enough to even be a GOTY contender.

Sony game=GOTY contenders every year with winners here and there.

It doesn't. It's a great game that does a fantastic job recapturing the feel of an Indiana Jones adventure.

Release timing was a shame though, if this came out 6 weeks earlier I feel like it would've been talked about a lot more for end of year awards

What is it about this game and all the desperate sensationalism?

Because it's pretty much the only legitimately good game to come out of Xbox in many a year.

So the expected media outlets are propping it up as if it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I personally will be worried if MS ever wins GOTY in this day and age. I like it when they're tastefully underground. High production values but alienating to the mainstream.

Sony is the GOTY master for 20 years. If you abbreviate Ghost of Yotei and add a T, did you know it spells GOTY?

And we can reverse that formula for you. :D

Of course, and I bet they're one of the only few who rated it accurately cause the check didn't clear on time.

I've already covered this:

Pure Xbox have been taking the Ambassador programme ending personally.

And for the record, I think 6/10 is very harsh, I think the experience as a whole is a solid 8/10.

But then, I played it maxed out on PC including path tracing, not on an Xbox console.

I'm worried, well more annoyed they don't make GOTY quality games for the most part anymore which keeps them away from contention.
That's not the type of underground anyone should want.

Ghost of Yotei very well could be and why is this? Brand history is on its side.
This can't be said about MS games. Nobody thought Indy would end up good yet it thankfully did.

You played DF's best graphics winner of the year regardless of platform and I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙏

More people on GAF will play it this year and will enjoy it like we did in December, hopefully.

I think there's a chance it could get some additional attention since it's coming to PS5 in the coming months (and will undoubtedly sell better there than on the Philbox)

Wait.. this whole ambassador program thing hasn't been a joke?

Haha, well, what can I say! :D

And not to be completely dismissive, but the way that post reads is that it must have been really hard for you to write that.

On a more serious note, I don't think the majority of people are as dismissive of Xbox and its games as you were implying. If everything was A-OKAY according to Microsoft themselves, they wouldn't have bought Bethesda and then spent 70B to buy Activision.
