Quite bad. You can understand why it has to be scripted though, for the reasons you state, the stakes are high.

But, accepting that a politician's job is at least in part to be a figurehead, to be reassuring people and to be able to respond to things, not being quick witted enough to say "we're getting a dedicated website up and running now, but until then the information you need will be on the mayor's office website, which is..." Is pretty indicative of someone who's not necessarily the right person to be in front of cameras in a crisis.

Pictures like this will resonate far and wide. I was unsure if I had been on the streets that had burned, but this is a location that nobody will be in doubt about. Many of us will have walked on those boards. My keys have a keyring on them that I picked up from a stall on that pier. Millions of others will have similar reminiscences. Very sad to see.

I had the most interesting conversation with a recruiter from an actuary company many many years ago. For those who don't know, actuary is the field of applied mathematics concerned with calculating financial risk, and is a very important part of insurance companies. He explained to me what he does, and I looked at him and I said "It sounds like you guys decide who lives or dies" and he looked at me a moment and replied "Well that's a little more dramatic than I like to say it, but essentially yeah" and he chuckled. I was never good enough at math to go into that field but the convo stuck with me all these decades

I refuse to believe I'll see a picture of the Hollywood sign on fire. Also it's not that far from the observatory, will that be okay?

This is going to be absolutely devastating for the few bits of wildlife that was still clinging on in those hills and state parks.

It might not look so good after if it gets engulfed in flames though, might be oxidized until it's completely black and might melt a bit

There are too many possible factors to jump to that conclusion at this time. SoCal gets windy, but this is just a different level.

In the last week I've been near a transformer that blew due to the heavy winds, which ends up being quite common. I've also seen multiple homeless encampments go up in flames when the fires they started to keep warm got out of control. One of those times a bunch of propane tanks started going off as well. Sounded like a war zone.

Then you just have the random occurrences, like a car catching on fire, idiots tossing cigarettes, electronics sparking, and other things to start things off. Could it be arson? Sure, and there's a good chance that would explain some of the random fires popping off. Terrorism though? Doubt it purely on the basis of what are the odds it would be so successful?

Of course my default stance is random fire gets out of control in dry state. I'm not ruling out terrorism.

I've been thinking that, I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. This is one of the worst natural disasters we've ever had, and all they can think of is controlling the narrative. Even ResetEra has a thread on this. Reddit is so fucking cooked.
 
I dunno, arson as a source is a possibility we are poorly prepared to combat.

Imagine Blackrock, after getting these areas uninsured, then burns it down and now can swoop in and buy it all up for pennies on the dollar since the property/building owners can't afford to not sell. Kinda like the Lanai fire was a dry run (if you believe that theory in the first place).

We'll see if californians get more FEMA aid than rando hawaiians.

If it was slum land with good views that they wanted to turn into million dollar homes I'd believe it but this is burning down the homes of people as rich as Paris Hilton so it seems unlikely that they'd destroy it all just to rebuild it for the same clients.

Trump was mocked world wide for wanting the forest floors cleared of debris and it wasn't done so now the fires are worse than ever.

There's a fine balance between ignoring the issue, doing upkeep, and trying to not destroy the ecosystems that rely on dying wood but someone will know how it works elsewhere.

I lived in CA for 45 years. What he said has been said for decades. Even before Newsom. Gray Davis let San Diego burn twice in the early 2000s. It has nothing to do with Trump or your TDS. Sacramento starved Central and SoCal of water to save a tiny fish in the delta. The ash is on Newsom's hands and he refuses to fix it. He should be prosecuted.

You don't need to be a genius to start addressing the problem, the problem that is not new or was quite well known. I guess we needed to burn the whole city in order to suddenly realize that the problem should be addressed 🤣

I don't think that anything will change in California though. People will probably leave and will continue voting for democrats.
