Controversial opinion time: Quackshot > Ducktales.
Sega CD model 1 BIOS music > Sega CD model 2 BIOS music.
I like Quackshot a lot, but I think DuckTales still edges it out a bit.
(Possibly) controversial opinion: Deep Duck Trouble and Lucky Dime Caper > Quackshot
Controversial opinion time, Part 2: Sonic CD US Music > Sonic CD Japan music
granada showed up still waiting for them to post all the shooters they took in
The Sega CD version does look worst, but seriously, the PC version's not much better... there aren't many if any more colors on screen, for instance. The PC version still has like 8-16 colors in the live-action-video portions, just like Sega CD...Yeah, visually the Sega CD version was the worst. I didn't mind the visuals too much, save for the over head T-16 level through the canyons. It was pretty much a muddy, pixelated mess. The rest I could make do with. I just didn't think the gameplay was all that exciting and overall it was kind of slow moving.
I've seen bad reviews of the PS1 version, but I have it for PC. The PC version's alright. I do like the first one a bit more, but it's an okay, simple action game, similar to the first but not quite as endearing. I know the PS1 version doesn't have analog support, unlike the PC version, but otherwise I don't know a whole lot about it.As for part II, I never owned it. I remember my buddy got it on PS1 and traded it in after a few weeks so I only got to play it maybe twice. Don't have much memory of what it was like. I just remember flying the Falcon through the asteroid field.
Hah... yeah, trying to figure your way through the game's mazes is ludicrously difficult. I like it anyway.I simply could not make heads or tails of that game and thought the difficulty was absurd. I remember renting it and thinking along the lines of, "OK, this is the last shot I'll give these FMV games." And that was that.
It was almost full screen, yeah. But that "gameplay"... argh!I grudgingly listed Tomcat Alley because I just remember playing it and thinking, "I don't hate this as much as the others." Probably solely because of the fighter jet theme and I think because it was full screen when most of the FMV games were played in windows.
That's what I've heard, but at least they tried something that used the power of the Sega CD (using its hardware sprite-scaling to pull off a 3d look), instead of just porting a Genesis game... I don't care about football games myself though. Also, forgot to mention what I think was perhaps the worst and biggest disappointment on the Sega CD....Joe Montana Football. Just a complete disaster of a sports game. Bad controls, terrible frame rate, poor sound, you name it and this game failed at it.
^looks good! ive done that for tons of carts (all my SNES & NES in universal game cases, natch) and i think it looks great, its just cutting them to fit that sometimes gets interesting. a repro cart guy i know does them on thick glossy paper & i assume he has them cut at Officemax or wherever, so the shape's spot on but honestly, the cover to most genesis cases is kinda glossy itself so i think they look good even on regular. god knows people only look at the spine 90% of the time anyway, heh.

This just came up in another thread - does anybody remember what an absolutely incredible space exploration game this was? Waaay ahead of it's time, anybody know about developer legacy on this one?

So this came in Wednesday:
Spreading this across this topic and the Saturn one.
The Misadventures of Flink is pretty nifty.
It's also pretty bloody hard.
I won't say the controls suck, but they take a fair bit of getting used to, as you start off walking kinda slow and slowly build up momentum as you continue walking. Unless you jump, which seems to get you to your running speed (which still isn't that fast, btw) instantly. Nevertheless, even basic jumps over bottomless pits seem kinda finicky; I was surprised to find myself dying in the first one I came across, and getting my first Game Over in the first stage! I wasn't gonna do the "infinite continues" mode since you can't beat the final levels with that active, but I think I might break it out anyway just so I can ease myself into the game's mechanics with minimal frustration.
Other than that, good God is this game gorgeous. Even limited to ~61 colors, the backgrounds and sprites for this are incredibly intricately detailed. Also, they seem to be using a lot of nifty effects; the third stage has these serpents that jump out from the background at wherever you happened to be standing when they started jumping. I hear all of these effects are in the cartridge version of the game, too (Europe-only, to my understanding), so it's not exactly like it's taxing the Sega CD particularly, but that only makes the effect even more impressive. Eager to see more of this game.
Is it anything like Star Control?

This is what I've gotten in so far in May. I honestly have never seen a copy of Atomic Robo-Kid in this kind of condition and it's been a long time since I saw Gaiares looking that good. All of these are super though, and as you can see, James Pond 3 is unopened. It was a total of $75 shipped in a couple different shipments.

Booted up Phantasy Star II on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis collection today.
God I had forgotten how much I looooved this game as a kid. I never had the actual cart sadly, I played it on this:
I seriously might sit down this weekend and really try to grind through this game for nostalgia's sake. I need to track down a cart sometime...
Atomic Robo Kid was on Genesis???? I did not know this!
I used to play it at the barber shop when I was a kid. I used so many quarters on the arcade one.
*dies on level 2 the 3rd time* god why did i buy this game again
Starflight is a classic. I have one also without the map but mint in every other way.Aw shit son, this game is amazing.
AFAIK the devs only made the sequel (which didn't get a console port) and then each went their own way, don't think they did much. The Genesis port was handled by Blue Sky software, a small company that went under in the 2000s.

I'm so tempted to start a Genesis collection. I want physical copies of some of my favorites (LandStalker, Dynamite Headdy, Light Crusader, Ristar, Shinobi III, etc.) and complete copies don't seem too hard to find (nor are they too expensive) on Ebay. Hmm...decisions.

Do it! Genesis is one of the most fun consoles to collect for. A lot of the early titles are easy (and reasonably priced) to find complete because of the clamshells. The games are extremely playable due to their arcadey nature and you won't really come across crazy demand for titles like you would on SNES with the Final Fantasies, Earthbound and Chrono Trigger or impossible titles like those rare NES games.
I think the Genesis has something for everyone from platformers to shooters to rpgs. Great games, awesome communty, interesting homebrews and repros, and the games are plain fun and easy to get into.
Yeah, well, I grew up with the Genesis too (along with NES/SNES) and as I explore its library more today I realize how many great games were on it. As a kid, my brother and I had a decent collection, but of course we sold everything over the years because we didn't know the value in collecting/holding onto classics. Emulation/modern day "collections" (like Sonic's Ultimate Collection or whatever it's called) just isn't doing it for me anymore. I think I may go snoop around Ebay a bit tonight... =D
I got some goodies in the mail today. This will end my online shopping here until about July when I get home and organized. I might still have some local finds but I'm not counting on much to be honest. I picked up 3 repros off of SA, looking at doing boxes and manuals myself so I might post an update on those and I scored a pretty mint copy of Moonwalker super cheap on eBay recently so I'm glad to add that to the collection.

Reproduction carts.Where did you find that games? Those game wasn't released at USA, so no official Genesis version is possible.
Plus you can't use a Power Base Converter with a Model 2 without doing some permanent surgery to the thing; the thing is modeled to fit snugly on a Model 1, so it expects empty space where the Model 2 provides none, and as such it won't fit.Good call. I was snooping eBay myself for a power base converter to possibly look into exploring some of the Master System library and came across this decent lot: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/151041287896?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Might be worth your while. I'm in no way affiliated with that auction and the shipping is discouraging for me since I don't need a console or any of those games myself.
lolmaaaaaaan this was one of my favorites. fuck ya'll that haven't made the mistake of trying to communicate with the Uhlek...SMERG SMERG SMERG WASNT THAT A FUNNY JOKE
for real, start a ship and make your medical an elowan named Dr. Dre, and assemble your ship of varying races & hip-hop names. focus on saving up to buy the component to scan for more minerals first; it's mad expensive but it pays itself off & buys more shit with a quickness.
hail everyone, disarm & be friendly (not necessarily obsequious) when addressing them...except Uhlkek (sp). you know when they're in their territory; you might need a towjob but fuck their shit, blast them to ash and collect what's left.
do this till you find the right planet, then land & drop off the bomb. watch the credits & bask in your badassery & starmap full of wormholes. it's a classic.
You know, since people keep mentioning it...I really can't think of a lot of expensive Genesis/Mega Drive games.
Pretty much all that I can think of off the top of my head are:
-Alien Soldier
-Battle Mania
-Battle Mania Daiginjō
-Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
-Mega Man: The Wily Wars/Rockman Mega World
-Panorama Cotton
-Pulseman
They're all $100+, usually. And those are mostly games that never made it to the US...except for Battle Mania, which came out here as Trouble Shooter, which usually goes around $30 for the US version.
Mega Man: The Wily Wars and Alien Soldier did make it to PAL territories and the Sega Channel in the US, though. Pulseman was also exclusive to the Sega Channel. The others are Japan exclusive.
I also want every single one of them. I have Sailor Moon in the mail, since I got lucky and found a cheap (albeit, loose) copy, but the rest...well, I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford them. Heh.
...well, I guess I could probably get Battle Mania/Trouble Shooter, since the US version isn't very expensive, but yeah...
Centy/Ragnacenty. and Musha.
