^nice!

Controversial opinion time: Quackshot > Ducktales.

havent played ducktales in forever, but i was impressed by how great Quackshot was on a recent replay, i'll allow this

Sega CD model 1 BIOS music > Sega CD model 2 BIOS music.

i don't know if this point is even arguable

I like Quackshot a lot, but I think DuckTales still edges it out a bit.

(Possibly) controversial opinion: Deep Duck Trouble and Lucky Dime Caper > Quackshot

*sigh* yet another acclaimed SMS title i couldn't find in the day

Controversial opinion time, Part 2: Sonic CD US Music > Sonic CD Japan music

a friend/gaffer argues otherwise all day, but he's right and you're wrong; i grew up with Sonic Boom and will hear nothing against it

I decided to start printing out covers for loose games I have. I still need to buy cases for them, but I decided to test them out using the case from my copy of NBA Action '94. Here are the results for two of three I'm doing, which were printed with just a regular printer and paper:

Spider-Man:

Sailor Moon:

I don't have my copy of Sailor Moon yet (it's in the mail), so that's why there's no cartridge in the picture with it.

Now I'm only missing a cover for T2: The Arcade Game, as I can't find a decent resolution scan of the cover. Anyway, I got that and Spider-Man for free years ago without any cases for them, but now I think it's time they got their own.

I might try and get one for Star Wars Arcade, since it was bundled with my 32X and came with no case because of that, but I don't know if I'll do that yet...but I probably will. And now that I think about it, Genesis and Master System cases are the same, so I guess I'll do one for my loose copy of Wonder Boy, too. I actually just found the cover for it. Edit: ...and now I'm done with that.

EDIT: Went ahead and did Star Wars Arcade, too:

Anyway, besides eBay, does anyone know of any place that I could get some empty Genesis cases? I could just get extra copies of some cheap sport games I already have, but I'd rather get cases that are already empty. I need 5, at least. I can get them off of eBay, but I wanna see if there are any other places.

^looks good! ive done that for tons of carts (all my SNES & NES in universal game cases, natch) and i think it looks great, its just cutting them to fit that sometimes gets interesting. a repro cart guy i know does them on thick glossy paper & i assume he has them cut at Officemax or wherever, so the shape's spot on but honestly, the cover to most genesis cases is kinda glossy itself so i think they look good even on regular. god knows people only look at the spine 90% of the time anyway, heh.

Yeah, visually the Sega CD version was the worst. I didn't mind the visuals too much, save for the over head T-16 level through the canyons. It was pretty much a muddy, pixelated mess. The rest I could make do with. I just didn't think the gameplay was all that exciting and overall it was kind of slow moving.
The Sega CD version does look worst, but seriously, the PC version's not much better... there aren't many if any more colors on screen, for instance. The PC version still has like 8-16 colors in the live-action-video portions, just like Sega CD...

As for part II, I never owned it. I remember my buddy got it on PS1 and traded it in after a few weeks so I only got to play it maybe twice. Don't have much memory of what it was like. I just remember flying the Falcon through the asteroid field.
I've seen bad reviews of the PS1 version, but I have it for PC. The PC version's alright. I do like the first one a bit more, but it's an okay, simple action game, similar to the first but not quite as endearing. I know the PS1 version doesn't have analog support, unlike the PC version, but otherwise I don't know a whole lot about it.

I simply could not make heads or tails of that game and thought the difficulty was absurd. I remember renting it and thinking along the lines of, "OK, this is the last shot I'll give these FMV games." And that was that.
Hah... yeah, trying to figure your way through the game's mazes is ludicrously difficult. I like it anyway.

I grudgingly listed Tomcat Alley because I just remember playing it and thinking, "I don't hate this as much as the others." Probably solely because of the fighter jet theme and I think because it was full screen when most of the FMV games were played in windows.
It was almost full screen, yeah. But that "gameplay"... argh!

Also, forgot to mention what I think was perhaps the worst and biggest disappointment on the Sega CD....Joe Montana Football. Just a complete disaster of a sports game. Bad controls, terrible frame rate, poor sound, you name it and this game failed at it.
That's what I've heard, but at least they tried something that used the power of the Sega CD (using its hardware sprite-scaling to pull off a 3d look), instead of just porting a Genesis game... I don't care about football games myself though.

Often for my loose games with printed replacement covers I use customized art. My Alisia Dragoon for example is a mashup of the Japanese and American box arts I got off the cover project.

The reason I do this is two fold. It often ads a unique visual edge and I don't want to pass off my incomplete games as complete.

This just came up in another thread - does anybody remember what an absolutely incredible space exploration game this was? Waaay ahead of it's time, anybody know about developer legacy on this one?

Interestingly enough there's a complete copy with the map on eBay right now. Unforunately, I've never heard of this one at all.

Interesting. After looking it up on Mobygames, I see it was also on the C64 and I was a huge C64 gamer but I don't think I remember this game. Course I don't recall seeing it on the Genesis either. According to Moby, it was made by Binary Systems who were 5 guys that met in college and only made two games, this and Starflight 2.

It was kind of this quiet odd game - definitely missable, but I'm a little surprised there's not more reverence for it on GAF actually cuz it's generally held in pretty high esteem especially coming from a generation where good space exploration sims were few and far between (and really still are).

The best way I can describe it - and I know this is gonna sound overzealous but bear with me - was shadowrun in space. It had great interaction, dialogue, management, and mechanics and all packed into a genesis cart well before its time.

Oh well - if you come across it for any platform (apparently the genesis port was actually pretty awesome, and some feel the best version), give it a try. I imagine its hard to come by as an original cart, though there seems to be a good number of roms.

So this came in Wednesday:

Spreading this across this topic and the Saturn one.

The Misadventures of Flink is pretty nifty.

It's also pretty bloody hard.

I won't say the controls suck, but they take a fair bit of getting used to, as you start off walking kinda slow and slowly build up momentum as you continue walking. Unless you jump, which seems to get you to your running speed (which still isn't that fast, btw) instantly. Nevertheless, even basic jumps over bottomless pits seem kinda finicky; I was surprised to find myself dying in the first one I came across, and getting my first Game Over in the first stage! I wasn't gonna do the "infinite continues" mode since you can't beat the final levels with that active, but I think I might break it out anyway just so I can ease myself into the game's mechanics with minimal frustration.

Other than that, good God is this game gorgeous. Even limited to ~61 colors, the backgrounds and sprites for this are incredibly intricately detailed. Also, they seem to be using a lot of nifty effects; the third stage has these serpents that jump out from the background at wherever you happened to be standing when they started jumping. I hear all of these effects are in the cartridge version of the game, too (Europe-only, to my understanding), so it's not exactly like it's taxing the Sega CD particularly, but that only makes the effect even more impressive. Eager to see more of this game.

Starflight reviewed well at the time, I did play it once seemed quite good but my interest was elsewhere at the time with more arcade games. Worth getting if your looking for a deeper game to play.

I have a very special place for the Mega Drive in my heart. Even though i had a C64, what really got me into games was my Mega Drive which i got for christmas.

To be more precise, i knew i would get one and also knew where my parents hid the console. So a couple of nights before christmas when i was home alone i took the opportunity and hooked the Mega Drive up and played the first couple of levels from The lion king. It was a breathtaking experience for me. I got busted because the receipt fell on the floor which i didn't notice.

Another great memory is connected to my first 32X game, Virtua Racing. It must have been so advanced that it cost my parents 100€ day1. It must be one of my most played games though. Everytime one of my friends attempted to beat my time i turned the console off...jeah i know. Another favourite of mine was Metal Head, but this one was for the 32X as well.

Good times!

Yeah, Flink is a really good game, but I badly wish that it had a save system... '80s to early '90s European games often were way too hard, and this game is one example of that. Still though, it's one of the better US Sega CD exclusives...

As for that Europe-only cartridge version, it does do most of those effects too, but that version does have a few fewer areas (they added some content to the CD release), and doesn't have the intro of course. Yeah, impressive work for sure.

This is what I've gotten in so far in May. I honestly have never seen a copy of Atomic Robo-Kid in this kind of condition and it's been a long time since I saw Gaiares looking that good. All of these are super though, and as you can see, James Pond 3 is unopened. It was a total of $75 shipped in a couple different shipments.

I've got this in box with the manual, no map though. One of my favorite genesis games. The manual is 140 pages long you can barely close the box lol

Atomic Robo Kid was on Genesis???? I did not know this!
I used to play it at the barber shop when I was a kid. I used so many quarters on the arcade one.

God I had forgotten how much I looooved this game as a kid. I never had the actual cart sadly, I played it on this:

Aw shit son, this game is amazing.

AFAIK the devs only made the sequel (which didn't get a console port) and then each went their own way, don't think they did much. The Genesis port was handled by Blue Sky software, a small company that went under in the 2000s.

if for whatever reason you get overwhelmed - it's a no-joke grindfest, pretty mean at some points - just as a heads-up, there's a PS2 on JPN PSN (if you have a PS3) that lets you tweak walking speed, encounter rate, XP and all kinds've things to make the classic more bearable!

ARC was one of the early 3rd-party Genesis games. I wanna say I bought it for the crazy name alone, but honestly the video looked fairly weird as well. Man. You'd never see a game like that released today...

UPL was a pretty strange developer. Check out Mutant Night (arcade) if you've not. Rumor has it Nintendo hired the whole team..

*dies on level 2 the 3rd time* god why did i buy this game again

Ghouls n Ghosts, still my favorite of that series. Such great memories, the dawn of the 16-bit period. ALL 9S BAYBY!!!

Wow... I never even heard of Mutant Night before you mentioned it! It is insane how many oddball arcade games there are like that. It's rare someone mentions something from before 2000 that I never saw or heard of. Very cool.

Atomic Robo-Kid is not the greatest Genesis game of all time, but it is a very nifty and unique title. I'm still in awe of the condition as every time I have ever run across it, even back in the 90's, the box and insert were always beat up or it was a former rental, etc. There just weren't that many in people's collections apparently.

Starflight is a classic. I have one also without the map but mint in every other way.

A friend of mine programmed the CGA graphics patch for IBM PCs of the time. He did it out of the goodness of his heart. Modding in another era!

I got some goodies in the mail today. This will end my online shopping here until about July when I get home and organized. I might still have some local finds but I'm not counting on much to be honest. I picked up 3 repros off of SA, looking at doing boxes and manuals myself so I might post an update on those and I scored a pretty mint copy of Moonwalker super cheap on eBay recently so I'm glad to add that to the collection.

Well, I lost any will to finish Phantasy star 3

I was in the third generation with adan, just at point to get the legendary weapons, and then I stopped to care, I don't know if I will finish his history or for the matter the other 3 endings that you could get in the end.

I will post my gripes with the game

1) I feel that after the first 2 dungeons in the game where you only had 2 characters, the game gets super easy, at least I never was in a situation where I will never see a game over screen. Maybe I grinded a bit too much, but it wasn't more than 2 hours apart from the actual game. also, 90% I only use the automatic attack, since this game doesn't requiere to had an actual strategy to win the battles. In ps2 when you had to fight against the cyborgs, lots of times you needed to do very specific things to win the battles, specially if your party wasn't designed to fight against those cyborgs. Even the boss battles are boring and feel repetitive, not to mention that are easy

2) It's a real drag to travel from city to city, isn't so more that the distance are too large, but more for the fact that you had to always cross those ''space tunnels'' to reach from one part to another. From a storyline perspective, it makes sense to had this sort of connection, but still, is tiresome, hell even in a city you need to pass from a dungeon to reach the other side of the city. It doesn't help that at times you need go from point A to B, and then return to point A. Plus the environments where way more repetitive than in PS2

3) The story was amazing, but it doesn't had a good narrative, at least my main gripe was how stupid was the choice of your wifes in both generations, specially in the second, when the final boss of each arc becomes a dating show host and makes you choice between 2 options which until then you didn't know that you had some sort of interest with any of them. Even the cutscenes where more ugly that the ones used at PS2

After playing it a lot, I could why this series was the black sheep on the series, even though I still enjoyed a bit, maybe next week I will try it again

I'm so tempted to start a Genesis collection. I want physical copies of some of my favorites (LandStalker, Dynamite Headdy, Light Crusader, Ristar, Shinobi III, etc.) and complete copies don't seem too hard to find (nor are they too expensive) on Ebay. Hmm...decisions.

Do it! Genesis is one of the most fun consoles to collect for. A lot of the early titles are easy (and reasonably priced) to find complete because of the clamshells. The games are extremely playable due to their arcadey nature and you won't really come across crazy demand for titles like you would on SNES with the Final Fantasies, Earthbound and Chrono Trigger or impossible titles like those rare NES games.

I think the Genesis has something for everyone from platformers to shooters to rpgs. Great games, awesome communty, interesting homebrews and repros, and the games are plain fun and easy to get into.

Yeah, well, I grew up with the Genesis too (along with NES/SNES) and as I explore its library more today I realize how many great games were on it. As a kid, my brother and I had a decent collection, but of course we sold everything over the years because we didn't know the value in collecting/holding onto classics. Emulation/modern day "collections" (like Sonic's Ultimate Collection or whatever it's called) just isn't doing it for me anymore. I think I may go snoop around Ebay a bit tonight... =D

You know, since people keep mentioning it...I really can't think of a lot of expensive Genesis/Mega Drive games.

Pretty much all that I can think of off the top of my head are:

-Alien Soldier
-Battle Mania
-Battle Mania Daiginjō
-Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
-Mega Man: The Wily Wars/Rockman Mega World
-Panorama Cotton
-Pulseman

They're all $100+, usually. And those are mostly games that never made it to the US...except for Battle Mania, which came out here as Trouble Shooter, which usually goes around $30 for the US version.
Mega Man: The Wily Wars and Alien Soldier did make it to PAL territories and the Sega Channel in the US, though. Pulseman was also exclusive to the Sega Channel. The others are Japan exclusive.

I also want every single one of them. I have Sailor Moon in the mail, since I got lucky and found a cheap (albeit, loose) copy, but the rest...well, I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford them. Heh. :(

...well, I guess I could probably get Battle Mania/Trouble Shooter, since the US version isn't very expensive, but yeah...

Good call. I was snooping eBay myself for a power base converter to possibly look into exploring some of the Master System library and came across this decent lot: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/151041287896?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Might be worth your while. I'm in no way affiliated with that auction and the shipping is discouraging for me since I don't need a console or any of those games myself.

Plus you can't use a Power Base Converter with a Model 2 without doing some permanent surgery to the thing; the thing is modeled to fit snugly on a Model 1, so it expects empty space where the Model 2 provides none, and as such it won't fit.

Man, how in the world did I forget to mention MUSHA? Especially since I watch Classic Game Room, and Mark brings it up a lot. Hah.

Don't really know much about Centy/Ragnacenty, though, but I've heard of it before. The copies of Ragnacenty I see on eBay aren't very expensive, though, but the US version, Crusader of Centy, definitely is.

Speaking of Classic Game Room...I should go get a copy of Truxton soon. Thankfully, that one isn't very expensive at all.

Oh, yeah, I also forgot that Sparkster is really expensive now, too. Heh.
