Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

So Genesis-GAF, i probably made the single biggest purchase of my collecting career a few days ago. I got these games at 20 bucks a pop, let see how you think i did (all of these are CIB):

Atomic Runner
Beyond Oasis
Blaster Master 2
Devilish
Dragon's Fury
Dynamite Duke
Earnest Evans
Gain Ground
Mega Turrican
The Ooze
Skeleton Krew
Strider
Syndicate
Two Crude Dudes
Universal Soldier.

I have the first James Pond game CIB, and i don't really understand the appeal. I mean, yeah, puns. I do like that each level has a different thing going on in it, but it just seems boring and repetitive.

It is worth mentioning that all three James Pond games play completely differently. Only the first one is actually underwater for example; the second and third games are both more traditional platformers. I actually think the first might be the most interesting of the three, since it's the least traditional... but yeah, they're not exactly the best games. They're Euro-platformers through and through, you either like that or you don't...

I'm just about done with the Air Castle in Phantasy Star IV.

Holy shit. I had no idea the game was this good. I dabbled in it a few years ago, to about where I am now, but don't remember much, so it feels like a fresh playthough. The leap from PS II to this is crazy.
Congrats! That was a fairly tough fight. And yes that game is amazing. Still one of my favourite RPGs of all time.

More than anything else, the pacing is what puts PSIV in my top ___ of RPGs. There's a lot to be said about a game that's only ~10 hours long but never feels like it's wasting a second of your time.

There is a segment of the population that still prefers PSII to PSIV. Those people must suffer from some horrible disease.

Glass stove-top cleaners are less abrasive than Brasso.

Old game contacts have a thin protective gold layer to keep the metal underneath from oxidizing. If you use too much Brasso and rub it vigorously, that impressive black residue you're seeing isn't grime, it's the gold layer being stripped away completely.

If you're gonna use it use tiny, tiny dabs. Spread it around, give it a second, and wipe off slowly.

I've also heard of people having success using art erasers to rub off the grime on pins but have not tried it myself.

Rubbing alcohol doesn't do shit all.

Don't listen to the bad man, Nei, he didn't mean it.

I've been using electrical contact cleaner to clean my games. Thus far I haven't found a single game I haven't been able to get working using it. I think it's alcohol-based because it does dry very quickly.

I will have to try and fix my PS4 cart some day, I bought it for £15 unboxed but never seemed to get it working, more then likely dirty connectors.

Twenty each seems quite expensive but overall it probably balances out. Any Turrican game is a winner, Skeleton Krew is a quick, short blast, my Gain Ground has never worked, always wanted to play Devilish , The Ooze is hard and Atomic Runner is a freerunnergunner.

When he made the offer, i checked into it, and yeah, games like Mega Turrican are 50 CIB right now, so the cost gets off set a bit by that.

Just wanted to post up a pic of my more or less completed Genesis and add-ons. Easily my most played system. Can't recommend the controllers enough either.

Official wireless? You madman.

flea market score. $20 for a model 2 genesis, sega cd 2, wireless controllers, and about 30 genesis and 32x games. i already had a genesis and sega cd, but there were games worth that i got out of there, not even mentioning the controllers.

Let's put it this way: two official wireless Genesis controllers and the receiver for them goes anywhere from $80 to $100.

Yep. I got a set for $50, and they actually work pretty decently, assuming you keep withing range (its not a huge range, but it does have some, and it only takes 2 AAA. Impressive for the time).

Also, i do have a few loose carts now that i will have doubles of, if anyone wants/needs them, i'd love to do a trade (or sell them, but prefer a trade). They are:

Dragon's Fury
Gain Ground
The Ooze
Strider

I know this is the Genesis collection thread but I just wanted to mention that the PSP Version of the Sega Genesis Collection works nicely on the Vita. You have to transfer the game via PS3.

The games look damn nice on the OLED.

You did pretty good for CIB games! Definitely a good haul on Mega Turrican. Strider is another pretty good one since its a pretty early title that was popular.

Isn't the sound emulation pretty bad in that compilation?

Rygar 8 Bit

Jaguar 64-bit
the renovation games you got are worth more then $20 complete some of those tho like dynamite duke arnt worth that much but overall not bad

Anyone using an Everdrive? Really amazing to be able to load hacks onto hardware.

Apologies if talk of this kind of prohibited-- I'm assuming it isn't based on Dolphin talk.

HOLY SHIT. $20.

That's my same setup and it cost me WAY more than $20.

As a pro-tip, use the RCA plugs on the back of the Sega CD for your audio out. It sounds noticeably better for Sega CD games, and 32X audio will be output through there as well.

I've seen the Mega Everdrive being raved about. It's the save state system that interests me the most.

It's fantastic. I dropped 800 bucks on pretty much the whole line of Everdrives except for the Game Gear (He needs to seriously make GB/GBC and GBA carts) and Master System carts and I don't regret it at all. It has been a complete blast and I'm not sure why it's more fun than using an emulator. I think there's something immensely satisfying that takes me back to my childhood of wanting to play Japanese imports, the shitty pirates, and the fantasy I had of Japanese games getting translated (which now has since happened for many games)

I set up that RetroArchThingy last week on my PC. Tried a few games and really didn't like. Emulation never feels right for me. Boot up some crap on the Master System and I'll happily have at it.

My plunge back into the Megadrive library depends on purchasing the XRGB-mini. Might see if I can work that into a joint/money-fund Christmas present.

Geez, you were NOT kidding. Took three attempts, and still got through by the skin of my teeth. Had to use my last Sol-Dew. :(

First romp in the subsequent tower saw me only getting a ways into it, but everyone leveled twice in the process. Gonna be a rough dungeon, I can tell already.

Yeah, Lassic Lashiec is probably the second hardest boss fight of the whole game, after the very last boss. In a way he might be even harder than the last, because [end-game spoilers]
you can't use Raja, who makes a huge difference in the final fight. The last boss is pretty tough without Raja but fairly manageable with him, I'd say.

So, i've gotten through 25 games over on my Sega Tumblr, which i just capped off with the 1st Shining Force (which i had a great time with. Sure, its just a tactical RPG, but like Fatal Labyrinth, its very down to basics approach made it appealing for me).

However, i really wanted to make mention of Outrun 2019. This game really needs more love, even if the game itself is short and just a re-skin of Outrun, basically. The levels are beautiful, the music is fantastic, the game handles about as well as you would expect, it's a great 5 dollar pick-up for any Sega fan/collector.

2019 did some neat stuff with multi-tiered roads compared to vanilla Outrun. It's a much more "vertical" game.

OG Outrun on Saturn (AGES release) is my jam though.

Mutant League Football tonight with my son. I missed this back when it was originally released, always wanted to try it but never got around to, that kind of thing. Hilarious.

I already prefer abstracted/representational sports games to the realistic modern games. Adding fatalities, firepits, exploding mines, and bribable referees just makes it even better.

Yep. always prefered the arcade/zany sports games like NBA Jam, Tecmo Bowl, and Mutant League to the sim games. Its worth grabbing a copy of Hockey as well, though a complete copy will probably run you around 40-50 bucks.
