When you go to the Drafthouse, your expectations are already set.

You will be served food and drinks throughout the movie.
You will receive a bill that has to be paid before the end of the movie.
Kids are generally not welcome.
There is a lengthy warning right before each movie not to talk or text during the movie.

And someone texting is more distracting that some dude taking a swing from a bottle of beer or smacking on some wings or a waiter delivering food? Please.

Yes.

I don't see anything wrong with talking if it's just a whisper or something. What if my friend misses a part of the movie or doesn't understand something?

However this Alamo place seems pretty cool. I want to order food at a theater.

No one's talking about people who whisper. It's the people who are audible three rows back that are annoying.

your theater has waiters? completely awesome and stupid at the same time

This is nothing. When watching X-Men First Class last week, someone brought their baby in. Not a problem you wonder? It is when it starts crying throughout the film. Who the heck brings in a baby to a theatre?

Oh ok, yea fuck those people. Don't know how strict this theater is, thought even whispering about the movie wasn't allowed.

Hate that. People too cheap or lazy to find a sitter. Someone brought a baby into Watchmen and it was so annoying.

There is a big difference between.

"Hey want more popcorn?"
"Sure"

Compared to

"OMG Like, Why did that happen"
"Who is that guy again"
"Remember that guy in the beginning, Well thats him!"

You know the minute you sit next to some who has a fucking story to tell or starts asking questions, you're in for hell.

The rare whisper won't get you in trouble. It has to be bad enough for someone to raise a flag about you.

They actually made the policy more strict not too long ago.

On the one hand, people who text during movies are inconsiderate assholes. On the other, this Drafthouse place seems awful proud of itself. Apparently there are plans to open one in New York. I'm sure it will be in Williamsburg.

Whats the big deal about texting in a theater? I've had to whip out my phone a few times while watching movies and spend 10 secs to text someone real quick. Does that really bother people? Heck, I even try to shield the phone from everyone around me so no one will even see my trying to text.
Bright ass light emanating in a corner is very distracting in a room of darkness where there should only be one source of light.

Totally agree with what they did and the PSA. I'm very easily annoyed while watching movies in a theatre. In fact, I often choose to skip the theatre and wait for Blu-ray just I can watch certain movies in peace. If I knew that my theatre of choice would be this strict on stamping out these issues, I certainly would go more often.

This place sounds annoying as hell. Waiters coming in and out would be 500000x more annoying to me than a dude texting.

They hit on you and sit on your lap too but maybe its just me but that isnt annoying either.

This is a bit extreme. While it sounds good on paper, you really can't see 99% of the fucking patrons in a movie theater, you're too busy looking at the giant ass screen.

Talking on the phone or having obnoxious ringtones would be an obvious no-no, but texting doesn't bother me.

Hmm, I see what you mean and I'm kind of in agreement. Maybe they're going for a "thin end of the wedge" policy.

But in all matters GAF we must take sides. Given her voicemail and the general degradation of society (can only be witnessed when, like me, you get older!) I'm with the theatre. Boo that woman and her rambling vmail.

I actually agree. It is really annoying. There was a theater in Tampa when I lived there that served food during movies. It was so damn annoying (much more annoying than someone texting). I only went there once. Couldn't pay attention to the movie. But I'm not saying texting isn't annoying too. It is.

Its a restaurant and a theater. You order food by putting it on a piece of paper, and then placing it where it can flag a waiter. If someone is talking or texting, instead of writing down a food order, you write down a complaint.

The offender will get one warning, then get booted the second time.

Why the hell do people insist on texting during a movie anyway? Is your life so busy that you can't got a couple of hours without being in constant communication: if so, get the fuck out, because you can't afford the time to watch a movie.

Good work! I love it. Its annoying to me when people text in the movies. Like its so goddamn important one can't wait 1-2 hours.

So this is a draft house theater? Where waiters are running around serving people food and drinks, taking orders and what not?

Where people are munching on food and slurping on drinks in the middle of the movie, and a girl with a lcd light on to find her seat was such a problem?

These guys are just looking for free publicity from what I can tell. Either that, or they're just assholes.

Punish them by not going to their venue.

I could give a fuck less if someone wants to text during a movie. them pushing buttons does not interrupt me looking at a screen.

Cool. A glaring beacon of light does, however, bother other people. Their house, their rules. Don't like it? GTFO.

Where is this "munching on food and slurping on drinks cacophony" idea coming from? The only food-related sound that's ever been remotely annoying in a theater--or anywhere--is someone unwrapping cellophane. How loud is a hamburger? It's like you're making up cartoon sounds in your head.

Agreed. Doesn't bother me though, im not justifying it.

I don't necessarily need a whole theater complex like this. Just let me pay a few dollars extra on some showing or another where they can guarantee no one talking or texting. Enforce this policy on just a few showings and normal, polite, non-mouth breathers will flock to those showings. I'd pay almost double ticket price just to be able to watch a movie with asshole fucks with their cell phones.

It's policy. Good for them for making an example of this chick. Using the phone (in any capacity) may not be a big deal to you, but kicking people out when they violate the rules keeps the distractions to a minimum, which is really awesome.

Is it ok if I'm in the top row in the corner to myself and text? What if I have the back light low as possible. I didn't know the screens could be so bright as to be noticeable against a huge screen. Not that I ever text during a movie, never thought to try.

Here's the thing about that. You go in knowing that that's okay. At any theater, you know they serve food, so you've already made peace with it happening (even if you don't like it).

Texting and talking, on the other hand, are discouraged at all theaters and expressly prohibited at the Drafthouse. So, you shouldn't have to deal with them, and it's okay to be bothered when they occur.

Um, yes, it is publicity. What their advertising: We say shut your phone off and shut up, or we'll toss you. If you like a theater like that, come on in.

This. Bunch of babies in here. People texting around you is that much of a nuisance? Holy shit.

Texting is silent, and there's no way the 'light from their phones' (are you kidding me?) could possibly interfere with your movie to that degree.

If you're that sensitive about the conditions under which you watch a film, don't go to a theatre.

Talking and phone use is an entirely different animal though.
How about you not go to a movie theater if you aren't going to watch the fucking movie.

Fucking assholes.

Anyone ever went to a Studio Movie Grill? They have a similar setup with waiters coming in and people ordering food & drinks during the movie. I feel that the overall design of the theater rooms in regard to spacing between tables and seats makes it a very unobtrusive experience.

Yes, and while I applaud the effort, I really like Alamo way more.

People like you are a top reason I don't go to theaters anymore.

Never understood how people are that distracted by the light of someone texting. -shrugs-, I wonder if it's just one of those things that is SUPPOSED to be annoying so when you see it, it must become a distraction.

Funny vid though. She was warned.

on the opposite side you can argue stay at home if you don't want to see people doing things on their own free time. It's one thing to talk above a whisper and a whole other thing to text while your phone is on silent.
Its a private business and if the business doesn't want you to use your cellphone then you abide by those rules or you get kicked out. That easy.
