Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

Not even mentioning the superior multiplatform games, did you not see the giant wwll of indies, the Paradox and Croteam multi game deal, and all those Devolver games? Or are we being selective on how we see games?

Everything you just listed is coming to PC. The only way in which those were victories is if you literally only stick to just PS4 and have no other gaming system.

Plus, all the new, big first party games they focused on are coming late 2015 at the latest, while Microsoft's seemed to be 2016 titles.

Maybe Edge haven't forgiven Microsoft for trying to take a piss through gaming's letterbox, knocking on the door and asking how far it went.

The MS conference was basically multiplats, indies, forza, fable, halo, sunset, two ending cgi trailers. If you are not a fan of ms's exclusives it was boring. Plus, we knew everything before the conference already, whereas there were many surprises at sony's. Sony won because they had more surprises, thats how e3 works.

To me a lot like last year Sony showed just enough to make people confident in the HW while at the same time not tipping their hand too much on the rest of their WWS. It's crazy we don't know what games are coming from Bend, GG's second studio, Media Molecule, London Studio seems to be making something for Morpheus, Quantic Dream, Santa Monica, Japan Studio (400 employees and multiple projects, one rumored to be a JRPG), and I think we can say for certain Polyphony Digital is at work on GT7. Even some of the stuff on stage was just a teaser for what will be shown on the floor, seems Bloodbourne with have a big presentation with media today.

For me I got a lot of exciting things shown for the PS4, and it's exciting to know there is more out there to be shared still. They did a great job in bringing people in and keeping them around if that makes sense.

Sony is really in a strong strong position. They have some great new IP coming, plus the timed exclusives are some of the best indie games but the real big quiver in their bow is just the graphic superiority. Your going to see them continue to outpace X1 to a large degree and especially when the most exciting looking games right now are mostly 3rd party that is a huge deal.

Batman will look best on PS4
Far Cry will look best on PS4
Assassins Creed will look best on PS4
Witcher will look best on PS4

On and on and on and on.

As the gen continues that will only continue. It's why MS really really need a exclusive IP that blew our socks off because they start at a disadvantage.
When you completely ignore the PC that is.

Let's just be fair here. They had a 25 minute segment talking about tv, comics, vita tv, and a ratchet clank movie. As well as YOUTUBE. Wowwwwww. If ms would've uttered tv gaf would've exploded.

I also think Sony showed a much better line up, but that's not the same thing as having a good conference.

A conference needs energy, and to be well formed, paced tightly. MS outclassed them.

I don't really even see how Sony's lineup was 'much better' frankly. Lots of multiplatform stuff (most of the best stuff was multiplatform, really), The Order and Destiny still look boring, TLOU remaster, so far as I can tell from the trailer is completely pointless, CGI trailers out the wazzoo just like MS. To be fair I've never played LBP so that might be amazing, but it didn't personally hype me, tho it was cute.

I would put them neck and neck on game showings. But good lord, Sony's presser could have been half as long and it still would have dragged. Please Sony just hire someone funny next year, Aisha Tyler completely slayed everyone else on stage.

Does not detract from the fact that Sony have ALWAYS talked about more than games? MS took the choice to go GAMES, GAMES, GAMES - does not mean they have been doing that forever.

They did exactly that in the previous E3, making it the second E3 in a row.

uuh, ok.

All I know is that, as someone who doesn't own either system (nor a WiiU) i come out of this conference with less confidence about which console i should buy next, than when i was going in.

But this year they did and, as someone who buys a console for the games, I appreciate that.

If you enjoyed having time devoted to TV stuff and F2P games, more power to you. They could've shown better stuff during that part of the show and put that information out after the conference.

Lets also be fair and remember that Sony did NOT promise a games, games, games conference and it is not out of the ordinary for them to talk about stuff whether you like it or not.

Someone has to win. We just do that at e3. Let's be honest at the end of the day it comes down to the games you like.

What I don't get is the people outraged over the idea that Sony had a better confrence.

It's all opinions
You're right, they are just opinions.

However, opinions can be very biased as the author of the EDGE article seems to be.

Sony having things to show that resonates better with the people who didn't think much of Microsoft's games doesn't mean that they "steamrolled" the competition. The two of them didn't have that much of a difference in presentation, the only differences was one of them decided to fire their guns early on and at the very end while the middle was pretty bloated. Both of them still battled in making the most compelling case for buying third party games on their consoles for the most of the part, and they even had indie showcases to go along with it.

Both of them have the equally serviceable line-ups that have one or two interesting exclusives for this year but is saving the bigger guns for the upcoming ones. As far as I'm concerned neither of them "won", they're on equal grounds when it comes to content. Presentation wise I think Sony did slightly worse due to their lack of balance the way I see it, but that's just me. Neither showing was particularly spectacular and I think the whole "who won" question won't amount to anything as important as "did the gamers win?"

I don't get what's so "rad" about that Uncharted 4 reveal. We heard Sully and Drake talk, and then Drake stood up. Am I supposed to be any more excited about that than when they shows an Uncharted logo last year?

I love all the talk about how Microsoft showed so much of 2015 and beyond. Their entire first half was games coming out before the end of this year. Well, what exactly do you think Sony has coming down the pipe before the end of 2014? They have a remaster of The Last of Us, which came out a year ago and Little Big Planet 3, which is a franchise I tired of 6 years ago. Even The Order 1886 got a release date of Feb, 2015.

Sony's press conference to me was a total snoozer. The Order doesn't look like it's any fun to play, most of that indie stuff will probably also be released on Steam and eventually come to Xbox, Destiny/Batman/MK/Metal Gear are all multi-platform, and there's no evidence that we'll see Uncharted or Bloodborne in reality before the end of 2015.

The only news that made me perk up was Grim Fandango, and that is really, really cool. Beyond that, Sony's next 6 months aren't any better looking than Microsoft's.

You sound bitter. Not saying I disagree it was a bad show. But you're criticizing the highlights.

I think I will try to explain how I feel about the conferences for once:

Sony

They showed a great many games, a handful of which were surprises, but many that were expected or well known. However, in ADDITION to the games they showed, they spoke of their services, PS+, PSN features, TV integration, and one or two other things which I'm sure have eluded my memory at the moment. The only problem I had with the presentation was its format. As others have already stated, the presentation dragged when the TV segment rolled in. That part was boring. I attribute the negativity to the way the presentation was setup. It could have been better. But showing more does not mean you suddenly showed less, which is what some people are taking away from the presentation, which personally doesn't make much sense to me. It was a combination of games and services.

Microsoft
"Only games" was the motto, and they held true to that. That's great, I can't take that away from them. That's what a lot of people wanted, so good for those who only wanted games. But what about the ecosystem and XB1's future? I didn't see any additional features being touted. In fact, they just dropped their biggest differentiator, that which is Kinect. Personally, the only XB1 exclusive I would like to play is Ori (and possibly the Halo Collection as I've never played it before but would buy an XB1 for it now). But that's just me. Many people really enjoy the exclusive titles coming, and that's perfectly fine. Everyone has different tastes and opinions. But as Microsoft begin to focus more on games and become less of an all-in-one entertainment system, especially after dropping the mandatory-Kinect, I become less inclined to buy it over a PS4, especially since the PS4 is not only bringing its own exclusives on top of better performing multiplatform titles, but other services as well that integrate Vita, PSN, PS TV, and the future Morpheus.

I really feel that Microsoft's focus on entertainment outside of gaming actually helps; it's the focus on TV more than games that becomes the problem. Now that they've gone to the other extreme, I don't think they have much of anything to differentiate them from their competitor(s), aside from some exclusives, of which both PS4 and XB1 retain, and we all know that the multiplatform games are going to perform better on the PS4. Sure, I can still create an all-in-one entertainment system for myself if I go out and buy the optional Kinect, but because they've now made it unnecessary, support for it will dissipate. And the few exclusives shown that appeal to me from XB1 do not warrant a $399 purchase. For others a game or two sells a system, but I can't afford to do that. If I could, admittedly I'd buy one right now because of the Halo collection and Ori, but the reality is that I can't. On the flip side for the same price, I find more exclusives appealing on the PS4, and they are bringing more features that I could appreciate should I choose to buy it.

Edit: Also, I don't mean to offend anyone. In the end, it's up to personal preference. Solely based on games, I don't think any one is better than the other. Sure, one may have more or less exclusives than its competitor, but it all comes down to preference. You enjoy what you enjoy! My taste is no better than anyone else's.

They certainly showed that PS4 has a more exciting/interesting future. More varied and unique line up, and PS Now and Morpheus makes Sony look a few steps ahead. Even if they remain niche endeavours.

Microsofts exclusive line up over the next couple of years is good but personally it doesn't excite me, so I think edge are spot on.

im not outraged...at all...i just dont take EDGE like something serious ..and seeing their "past" is pretty clear that they r biased for sony...

so that they give a "victory" to sony..was expected ....like misterxmedia will post something bad about sony tomorrow

The same can be said about anything else. If you aren't a fan of dark, grisly games with tons of blood and violence, then you probably weren't digging Sony's conference. Both conferences had great surprises and interesting games. This "console war" shit is really juvenile.

Yep. Gamers win, and Edge just continues to be disappointingly sensational with their headlines. It's fine to have that perspective; just remember that not everyone really wants a clear "winner" from E3 now. It's alright to want everyone - including the Big N - to do well.

My first impression is that Ubi, MS and Sony had equally uneven shows, I prefer EA this time around. However if you look at the games I would say that Sony had the best line-up for me, followed by Ubi, then EA and only then MS.

I mean MS has shown an abundance of immature cartoony titles, with narrative barely there, also almost all of the games were coop oriented, which is a huge turn-off for me. I like some coop from time to time, but forcing it into single player is just horrible. Their overall presentation was admirably cut to the chase and very honest.

Ubi however had that huge black chick drop obscenities like no tomorrow, she was the single worst thing to happen to me this year, her and these horrible Rabbids with low brow jokes. Games however were 50/50 some of them were really good, but none of them looked really stellar apart from The Division. AC was marred by forced coop, Far Cry too, R6? Really? All the gadgets and planning go down the drain the instant you smash your first wall.

Sony had a great start, but then that fat disappointment came to the stage and began mumbling and awkward-joking his way through the conference. Jeez, I just wish Tretton was inexplicably back as the next year's host. An abundance of good titles with rich narrative and good single player was marred by WTF moments like TLOU monsters in D3 and this embarrassing sales pitch of TV stuff. Powers my ass, seriously. R&C movie? Good lord, as if we didn't have enough 3d animated movies before. But then the conference got back on track and I was absolutely happy when I saw Uncharted trailer in the end.

EA had a good conference with good presenters, focused presentations and a good variety of games. Seriously, that's how you do these media briefings.

Yo must like good games then. On sheer quantity alone, how could you ignore the giant gakes advantage?

And btw,MSFT had a good show. They just ot blittzed with games from Sony.
Eh, this year was just disappointing all around but since most games are 2015 I think next years will be great.

IMO it feels like Sony's in a more mature phase of their strategy while Microsoft is just re-forming and starting to reap the rewards of their new efforts. It feels like MS is just catching up to where they arguably ought to have been last year.

Maybe this is a misperception, but it just seems like Sony's overall content pipe is much bigger (?) It doesn't matter if you want to write off games because they're on PC also, or whatever - Edge here is crediting them for that breadth. It feels like there's been a long string of announcements in the past year of games coming to PS4 that typically aren't also coming to XB1, and despite that, Sony still brought a slate of new stuff for E3. Maybe because of PS4's market position it may have gotten easier for Sony to persuade devs to bring things first or only to their machine?

Microsoft has started to broaden its pipe but it feels like it's only getting started on that road by comparison and I think that's what Edge is angling at.

When you completely ignore the PC that is.
PC advantage has always existed.
This does not negate the advantage that exists by having the feature console version.

If a game is being demonstrated via advertising, developers will show off the PS4 version and that does matter.

To be fair I've never played LBP so that might be amazing, but it didn't personally hype me, tho it was cute.

LBP3 looked incredibly underwhelming.
More like an expansion for LBP than something truly revolutionary (given the HW jump), even graphically it didn't look that good.
Also the shitty controls seem to still be there.

Sony has quite a few things up their sleeves, I guess.

Something creative from Media Molecule.
Gran Turismo 7 and The Last Guardian from Japan.
Uncharted 4 Gameplay
GuerillaGames West RPG
Something from QuanticDream
Sony Bends Project
Studio London is working on a AAA project

I think all these games will be announced by this time next year.

The question is: Will they have a huge blow out next year at E3, or will they spread the announcements.
Maybe Quantic Dream and Media Molecule at Gamescom
GT7 and TLG at TGS
Bend and Guerilla at E3 2015

Sorry I can't real the whole thread but I really loved the games shown. Like UBI and MS I wanted them all.

Sony killed the show momentum with letters and TV but I still got to see almost all the things I wanted.

Could have used at least one more fall Sony exclusive.

That Shawn Layden moment was absolutely painful to watch. The only time I actually decided to go the bathroom break. Not even "conceptual prototype" EA managed to do that.

Did you see Jack's reaction by the end of the video? He looks disappointed to an extent.

I really dont think the general public cares much about this stuff.

Considering Watchdogs sold 49% of its total sold copies in the uk (I believe it was the UK) on PS4, even though the difference in sales between consoles sold isnt that great, i think it does say something about people being choosy of what platform their multiplatform games are bought for.

As for the conference itself, i think if they had cut the non game sections by half the time majority of the people here wouldnt be complaining as much. I mean yeah Microsoft only showed games (Which was good to see from them) but Sony's conference was longer and so the time they spent on games was the same as Microsoft, it just didnt seem it because of how long the non games stuff dragged.

I watched Sony's conference in a movie theater in DC. Overall it was a bit of a confused conference with the best moments of the day (Bloodborne, Indies, LBP3, UC4) but also the worst by far (Power, hardware section to an extent). I really enjoyed it overall though and felt it delivered on promises that Sony has made over the last year. I am pleased- 8/10

Just finished watching Sony's conference was great. Didn't care to much about the TV stuff but some great games showed. No Mans Sky looked good glad its not an exclusive so everyone can play it. Destiny still looking great really not sure what platform to play it on yet.

Edge just sad.

I don't know why Sony thinks stuff like this is cool. TLOU crossover with Diablo? This was worse than the Powers TV show segment, and that is a bold statement.

lol I'm not surprised. Sony far and away had the better showing, just slogged in the middle with the Powers unveiling. I think people are just mad that Sony didn't have the same format to their conference as MS and still had the better show.

See now you're just projecting your own opinion onto everyone else.

And that ExtremeTech article is fucking awful.
