Apparently I'm crazy here, but I don't understand how KyoAni now owes everyone a confirmed lesbian pairing, and they would somehow be homophobic if they don't follow through. That scene was still plenty meaningful in its own right, even if it "only" makes them very close friends.
Yeah, the female character who likes girls -- either by yuribait with the other girls, or by groping the other girls, or by being a hentai artist who draws hentai that focuses on girls (ie not BL or such) -- but is totally straight and loves the male MC -- is a super-common trope, and I agree that it's stupid. The basic concept makes no logical sense. It's just there as pure fanservice. Not all of this kind of fanservice is equally bad, but the concept is completely stupid and does not work.
The reason for it is obvious, though -- the girl has yuribait moments, draws hentai focusing on girls, etc. because the male audience likes such things, but she's also straight and likes the MC because she needs to be available as a waifu / romantic option for guys and a real lesbian wouldn't really be that. So the reason makes sense, it's just not a good reason. Trying to cover all bases like that doesn't work.

It's a sad state of affairs when "yuri pandering" has become so ingrained in animegaf culture that people can't take a moment to self-evaluate and step out of that mindset and judge a work on its own merits.
Why can't we just let this thread die until summer?
Soma 09
Well, that's a first. I liked Soma and Erina humming the ED at the end but then it transitioned into the real ED playing the second verse. Never seen that before.
So is summer supposed to be a time when AnimeGAF explodes and the thread moves at a hyper pace?
Hopefully they reinstitute the old policy of banning the top 5 posters for 3 months if it does.
Nothing but trash. You can't stop me

The stuff in Euphonium isn't subtle. It's not a big deal or whatever but it's not subtle.
Is it wrong that I like this show despite hating SAO? - Episode 9
+1 to the harem this episode. Welf is a cool bro.

This got me, thanks for the laugh.
Maybe it would be for the best if there was no next anime thread, then everyone could just calm down until Summer!

nah. I like it for various reasons too. Bell isnt super OP for one thing.
While the yuri-outcry is...stupid it's honestly expected by the average anime viewerbase which is just kinda pathetic. I mean, you look at any /r/anime Hibike! episode discussion thread and I'm sure 80% of the top comments are about just yuri. And some of that could have been avoided if the directors toned down a bunch of these rather overt yuri hints with random blushing or half of what happened last episode.
I'm simply not sure if that's part of Reina's characterization or if they really just wanted to actively pander due the demographic that eats this up.
Either way I'll agree with everyone who says its getting obnoxious how that's become the focus for many people when it's like the least best thing about the show. Though there's plenty here who don't do that at least and I felt like we got a lot good discussion going on about Hibike! so far.

I don't think Summer will be as problematic as some people think.

C'mon guys, summer 2015 can't be that bad, right? ^_^
I've prepared myself just in case.

Summer 2015 is the opposite of bad.
Well, this is more proof of how toxic faux yuri/queer baiting/whathaveyou is.Apparently I'm crazy here, but I don't understand how KyoAni now owes everyone a confirmed lesbian pairing, and they would somehow be homophobic if they don't follow through. no you don't understand, i'm promised fuwa fuwa yuri waifus now and i don't get it by gawd and country there will be RIOTS and it's only Kyoani's fault for adapting the novels too well if i don't get anything after all that yuri pandering leading me on
I just find it a shame how this has started dominating the discussion about the show.
Sound! Euphonium is a phenomenal show with excellent direction, compelling source material, and generally pretty strong writing all working in tandem. It has a lot of great character interactions, a real commitment to portraying school bands in a realistic manner, and has generally been an all around great show.
But now all anyone wants to talk about is "YURI" and how Kumiko and Reina have to get together and how yuri the yuri show is. It does a disservice to the show itself.
