Omg I just checked and realized that my Asus Rog Strix 4090 that I bought 1,5 year ago for 2K now priced 3-4K on eBay. Wtf is happening?
So if I find 5090 close to msrp I can just switch for free?

poor and lazy optimization, supported by upscaling and framegen shenanigans
That's my assumption, but if there's an explanation that disproves it, I'm ready to hear it. Also, the existence of the xx90 Nvidia cards post-4000 series. A lot of clever hacks were mandatory to move the art form to where it is now. The 4090 and 5090 are waaaaaaaaaay further ahead of the pack than any flagship GPU was before. Bar none. I wonder if that doesn't play into the "shit we gotta cut to be realistic" meetings. Those 4090 sizzle reels are also good viral marketing for games. It seems were looking at a pretty wicked stew here. A ton of the really talented guys have been berated out of the AAA and are working on idie games that don't really push the limit. The wicked smart dude talent seems to be draining from AAA since indie is so healthy and doable.

Best Buy Canada, waited in queue online multiple times only to be greeted with a ‘sold out’ message.

Nvidia sucks. Best Buy sucks. They had years to prep for these bots.
They don't give a fuck about who gets it or not. They trow it in the wild and let the people fight for it like hungry dogs.

I bet BB employees got their hands on some though huh

How'd you even get an order in at B&H? I was under the impression that they hadn't even made anything available for sale there yet.
I was informed by a good friend that around 10AM on the 2nd they had in store pick up only allotments of four models, you would then call 800.606.6969 if you have an account with them and place a local order for same day pick up. They would hold for up to 3 hours or you relinquish your order, you would then call them and speak to either customer service or the initial person you spoke with (what i did) and tell then you might miss the pick up window and they would email you a link where you could secure your payment locking in the order as a standard online order and normal in-store pick procedures would then apply. They did the same with the 4090 during launch as well.

Wow. So anyone could've attempted this yesterday and arranged a standard online order of one of these cards?

Yes, you would obsequiously plea that you can't get there on time and inquire as to what options they could offer if any and they will treat it like a service ticket and email you the link.

I'm guessing this window of opportunity is over now? Otherwise I might be making some calls lol

Thanks for the info anyway. I wonder if this might be a signal that they'll be available on the B&H website soon.
On their reddit some are speculating tonight at midnight. If you are relatively near B&H and don't mind some city driving try Microcenter in store as well, their online stock doesn't always line up with their in store stock and they often have an independent in store allotment for locals as well.

Which subreddit? I'll check out the discussion

Anyone know where I can get a technical explanation for the newish trend of games being very vRAM heavy? It seemed to come along the same time as the storage thing. Layman perspective would wonder if they're tied together? I think of a lot of games with absolutely glorious, high detail texture work that do not come close to cracking 16GB at 4k.

This is the most expensive graphical leap we've ever had. Red Dead 2, Arkham Knight and Uncharted 4, compared to STALKER 2, Silent Hill 2R and UE5 in general makes zero sense. Yeah it looks better, but the cost in vRAM and flops is so fucking high for bump we got. I'd love it if some guy found a way to chart this visually.
Developers are trying to solve the problem with raster (prebake) lighting, where moving geometry (characters for example) does not match the prebake (scene) lighting. Here's for example Uncharted 4. The character is standing in the shadows yet it's well lit and that ruins the immersion.

Raster lighting can also look flat.

True dynamic lighting can solve these problems, but it requires expensive ray tracing. RT requires not only a fast CPU and GPU, but also more VRAM, as RT requires an acceleration structure to be built for the geometry. It's easier to build an acceleration structure for static geometry, but anything that moves (characters) or changes (level of detail) requires the acceleration structure to be rebuilt frequently, which increse VRAM usage even more. Nvidia is trying to solve this problem with mega geometry though. Timestamped:

As for RDR2, this game has beautiful scenery, but the geometry is not up to date with current technology. Just compare rock or ground texture in RDR 2 and UE5 games.

I've noticed this also it's crazy, I'm in the same boat.

I managed to snag a 4090 October 2023 for £1400 it's now going for over £2k

Which CPU are the 5080/5090 owners rocking? What's the ideal combo now?

CPU + GPU + Motherboard?
9800X3D here but really only if you want bleeding edge performance

Just my 2 cents but most modern high end CPUs are going to be just fine

You may lose a few frames here or there with different CPUs but but most people are fine if they dont land on a 9800X3D

It's here bros.
