Windows Central: Xbox Dev Direct's Mystery Game is a 'New Entry in Legendary Japanese IP'

How is saying Japan is Xbox's worst territory confirming that Japanese games only sell in Japan?

Don’t see the logic of framing the addition of a Japanese game as ‘trying in their worst territory’ when these games - as described - have a global audience.

If it’s a Japanese game, it’ll be multiplatform.

It's really ironic how good MS is at getting forum goers excited about this kind of stuff, but at the same being this awful at converting it into consumer interest in their platform.

I'll wait and see as always.

Also would be hilarious if it's Ecco the Dolphin, don't remember a lamer "big name" from the 16-bit era.
It's windows central doing the hyping as usual. Even used the xbox meme line that xbox marketing use every year:

most promising games line up in history

This time it's most promising compared to 'greatest' years prior.

The logic is the fact that Microsoft has been trying to make headway in Japan for many years now. Getting more JRPGs on Xbox is obviously a continuation of that effort. This has been going on since the 360 years so someone saying they admire the persistence shouldn't be surprising.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Nobody is revealing something E3-worthy in January. So keep your expectations at ‘new Mana game’ low.

Indiana Jones was revealed last January.

Seems it's a Visions of Mana game:

I don't think there's going to be a new mana game this soon, maybe something of that style or caliber, a jrpg like persona perhaps?

I don't think that has to be 100% true. Last year they showed the Mana game that didn't come to GP.

If this is some big legendary IP getting a new entry, wouldn't be surprised if this is a standard release, not a GP one.

Greenie claimed these are games coming to GP.

The context is a Developer Direct aimed at a global audience.
Revealing a multiplatform game at the DD isn’t geared at ‘headway’ in Japan.

You don't think the big mystery announcement being a Japanese game would have anything to do with making headway in Japan? Eh.....ok, guess we just won't agree here.

Persona is on a way different tier than Mana. It's arguably the #1 JRPG in the world right now, only Final Fantasy is up there and the last couple of those have fumbled sales-wise.

That's true, but Sega and MS have been pretty chummy about their recent few JRPG's, so a new Persona being announced at an Xbox stream is not out of the realm of possibility at all.

It could be anything, as long as its not Shenmue 4 :p

To be fair I don’t think it’s possible for Xbox make any headway in Japan this generation. Like I can’t think of anything right now that would make XSX sell in glorious Nippon. They literally sometimes sell in hundreds of units a month over there.

Maybe when they get that Xbox handheld going it would be a different matter.

Any Japanese game they get is meant for global audiences.

It can be both. Lots of JRPG fans outside of Japan, but I'm just pointing back to the fact that Microsoft has made real efforts to sell Xbox to Japanese gamers in Japan over the years. And I just don't think it is so incredibly outlandish to say they are being persistent in that regard.

Eh....nothing made sense about Phil Spencer shutting down Tango. Moving on...
I think realistically they bailed on Japan toward end of Xbox 360 era. Note how Xbox One was all about TV and Sports and really nothing for Japanese audience for a long while.

And Japan was a tier 2 country for release from what I remember. Could be wrong though.

Dragon Quest XII is my guess
Agreed, it's been like three years since the logo reveal; I think it's coming out this year. I strongly believe that Nintendo had the reveal/advertising rights to it at some point, else we would know more about it by now.

My only other guesses would be a new Ninja Gaiden game or a dormant Sega IP, because we know they are making new Craxy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Golden Axe games. Question is, have they been "officially revealed" yet?

New chrono trigger. Whats currently next for the square enix release window after ff remake 2. Remake part 3 is in development whose knows about a ff17. So im guessing new chrono or a new dragon quest since legendary was mentioned. Didn't a new ninja gaiden announced recently?
