Not just you; the episode is full of little details that I could appreciate better (or at all) on the second viewing since I don't have to pay much attention to story or subs.
That's definitely a strong point of the show. Right from the start, in this episode the characters are established by their body language as much as by their design or voice. Oreki is very restrained with his expressions, and is seen a lot of the times avoiding eye contact or direct interaction, Satoshi is pretty flamboyant as demonstrated by his ability to tell stories, and Eru's delicate gestures and straightforwardness are represented very well. I think this attention to coherent body language is a constant in the show, but some episodes do it much better than others, and ep. 1 is among the best ones in this regard.
The writing and mysteries becomes much more satisfying, yes, but on the technical aspect, this first episode is as good as it gets. It's kinda obvious that was gonna be the case since it's the first episode and all, but it doesn't make it less impressive. I remember episode 2 dragging though, that was certainly on the low-end of quality for the show.

I just noticed Brave won the Oscar for Best Animated Picture. Do the fuckers who vote for this even watch cartoons? They should rename the category "Yearly PIXAR award".
I tried watching Fairy Tales, I got through about 20 episodes of it. It didn't do anything for me. I disliked the main character, and the constant, repeating gags got on my nerves. Does it ever get better?
Hell, I remember reading through the vast majority of Rave Master a few years back. Good memores of those. Hell, I probably will indulge in my vice and watch through the show and actually finish the manga this time around.
What Disney can learn from Disney.
Haven't forgotten! I just need to have some sort of indication that it will be...uhh...reliably available before I watch any.

Fuck Rin's mother. Leaving her kid behind alone at her apartment in the middle of the night? And yeah, balancing work with raising a child is hard. But that was seriously annoying listening to considering what Daikichi did at his workplace to be able to raise Rin. Yeah, yeah, writing manga isn't the same as being in sales. Point is, Daikichi did it. And maybe these things wouldn't annoy me so much (some people aren't ready to have and raise children, I get that) if she didn't seem so damn...apathetic about her. No real reaction whatsoever to Rin smiling baking a cake (or whatever she was doing) at school? Fuck you.

There was once a time when I cared about the Academy Awards and got angry when my personal favorites didn't get nominated/win. Then, it suddenly stopped. Now I'm only pleasantly surprised when things I like do win.
Can't be any less well-known than the super-obscure French stuff that gets nominated year after year. I know that Spirited Away won its year, but is it unreasonable to suggest that the Academy is just biased against Japanese animation?

I think they probably just have a general lack of interest/awareness in non-Miyazaki anime. Nothing Miyazaki has done since Spirited Away really deserved to win, and no one other than him really has any sort of name recognition. It's a bias, but a bias of apathy rather than one of disliking it.

You know, this is actually a pretty good overall list. I mean, it's great because Hyouka is #1, but it's even better that I can just say go through the list to people.
AnimeGAF is evolving.
Technically speaking, a movie has to be shown in American theaters to be considered.
Honestly, beyond anime and animated features, the fact that "name recognition" is even a factor to consider when handing an award that's supposed to reflect quality is laughable. Surely the people passing as judges have enough investment in their area to know stuff besides the most marketed of the mainstream?

To be fair, if marketing were genuinely the main factor we wouldn't see all these movies nobody gave any shit about winning all the other categories year after year. It's just the animation award that seems to be afflicted with this phenomenon.
Come to think of it, La Maison en Petits Cubes, 2009's winner for Best Animated Short Film, is actually Tsumiki no Ie and Japanese in origin without any connection to Miyazaki or Ghibli, but that's the only counterpoint I can think of.
I have generally not enjoyed Pixar's output post-The Incredibles (although I've yet to see Up) so I admit to being biased when I say that, while I don't think that Ghibli has produced something in the same league as Spirited Away since its release, the majority of its works since then have still matched or exceeded the quality of the best western works of the same time period. I realize that I'm in the minority, though, so I don't contest your Academy apathy hypothesis.

I don't see what you're talking about. European movies -in general- that get to theoscrs are huge European success every time. Almost alway winning prizes in Cannes, London and Berlin too. It's nothing near obscure at all.
