Discover what it means for Xbox to be playable on any screen.
As we gear up for the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, we couldn’t be more excited to meet up with our friends and colleagues in the industry and explore the many incredible new opportunities that await. This year, GDC takes place from March 17-21 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California. We’ll host partner meetings, participate in conference sessions, and sponsor events like the IGF Awards and the ESA Foundation’s Nite to Unite. Attendees that come by the Xbox Lounge in Moscone South will have a chance to see the latest Xbox experience on PC, join a Q&A with an Xbox development expert, and learn about the opportunities and benefits of building with Xbox across PC, Cloud and Console.

Xbox is expanding to any screen on any device, making it easier for anyone to play with the friends they want – whether they choose to play with Xbox console, PC, Smart TV or mobile. At GDC, we’re inviting game developers to go behind the scenes to better understand what it means for Xbox to be playable on any screen. We're committed to empowering game developers to tap into that opportunity by building cross-capable games that take advantage of Xbox across devices. Our presence will reveal the many ways game developers can reach more players with Xbox and showcase success stories of developers who are maximizing the opportunity.

Whether you're an indie developer or a seasoned professional, Xbox speakers will be presenting insights for every stage of your development journey. Check out the full schedule below. If you will be engaging remotely, you can learn more by visiting our Game Development Resource Hub here and to learn more about AI for Gaming, check out our Gaming AI Resource Hub here.

For us, GDC 2025 is as much about showcasing the Xbox developer experience as it is about fostering collaboration with partners and driving our gaming future, together. See you there!

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I've said this for years: Xbox's "Play Anywhere" program, which lets you buy a game once and play it on either PC or console, is the best thing Xbox has done maybe ever. Combined with free cloud saves, it's pretty seamless moving from console to PC and vice versa. Tons of fun modding save files on PC and loading them up on Xbox.

We desperately need something in gaming like "Movies Anywhere", where you buy a game on one platform and get it for every platform. I dream of a world where you don't need to double-dip to play a game you own on the device of your choosing.

In fact, the article/ad has nothing to do with publishing games on PS5, Switch, Steam, etc... it is announcing actions aimed at convincing developers and Studios of the "benefits" of releasing games in the Xbox ecosystem (which is no longer just consoles but an amalgamation of devices and XCloud).

From what is described, there is going to be a lot about "Playanywhere" and AI as a tool in game development.

That's only on the Xbox pc and console store for Xbox only games.

Nope, tons of third party games are Play Anywhere:

Just a few examples off the top of my head that I've personally taken advantage of, I'm sure there's tons more.

Yea but isn't Sony releasing their games on Steam just going to help cement Steam as the defacto digital locker and play your games anywhere? I don't think play anywhere is going to be as popular as people think. I'm a heavy gamer and play anywhere means nothing to me because when I leave my house I just don't have time to play games. I'm out doing things. Sure for people who travel for work it's great but that's not enough people.

For Sony I think it's more about being prepared for the change. They actually did it with PlayStation Vita & PS3 games being cross buy .

Games sell a lot on PlayStation consoles so I don't think they are in a hurry to move into the digital locker era but once it takes off you have to prepared or people will buy the games where they can use it on other devices.
PlayStation Portal is a pretty good answer to it for now .

I love that the PS console warriors are just screaming at the aether now. Good luck bois. You got your wish. Only exclusive console in town. Enjoy your PlayStation. Imma still play my XBOX PC Station or whatever.

Yes, but you're further highlighting the issue at hand here, by making those purchases you're locked to the Microsoft (Windows) store. It's all the same storefront as far as they are concerned, and because of that you're not getting two versions of the game, it's the same thing hence you'll often find the PC version is missing features/options that you'll find present in the non UWP version across other PC storefronts.

The only way this makes sense is if you still primarily game on Xbox consoles and you're entrenched there. For most people who primarily game on PC, they mostly won't give a shit about this and would rather opt for the Steam/GOG version all day long.

Square, surprisingly enough, is very open with this.

DQ 3 HD, the Mana game that came out last year etc are Play Anywhere.

It's good for RPG's if you wanna do a little somethin' somethin' with cheat engine and bring that save over to the console 🤫

I agree 100%, which is why I posted above that we need a "Movies Anywhere" type service that's platform-agnostic. With movies, I can buy a digital copy of a movie on Apple, and it ports over and can be watched on Amazon or Fandango. I'm a huge fan of physical games, but even I'd rather buy digital if it meant buying the game on Steam let me play the same game on Xbox, or buying on Xbox let me play on the PS5 or Switch.

I'm just saying that the Xbox implementation is the closest to that dream. Hell, even some Sony games have different SKUs for the PS4 and PS5 - meaning buying a digital copy on one system doesn't even give you the same game in the same ecosystem when you buy it.

EDIT: and once their "cloud streaming for games you own" thing comes to fruition, it'll further simplify the setup and make it easier to play on the device of your choice.
