Xbox Sales Hit Rock Bottom After Historic 2024 Decline

No I comprehend it. I’ve had every PlayStation ever. I just don’t get the blind hate towards Xbox. Guess some people just live online and make PlayStation their entire identity.
Xbox lied and lied over multiple console generations, and tried to take the entire console industry down using money-losing Gamepass to destroy console gaming economics. They absolutely deserve to be hated.

There is no blind hate. Some people just saw it for what it was, because the decline started during the second half of X360 and with XBO it didn't get any better.

It didn't come out of the blue with Series.

Quiet-quiting, you mean. They are taking up space and refusing to make it official. Amazon wouldn't throw their hat into the ring until the ink dries.

Good luck, Amazon.

Only Nintendo and Sony have ever achieved major success in this industry. Amazon will do a lot worse than Microsoft, they’re worse suited to console gaming now than Microsoft was in 2000.

Indeed, this is where most people started to go off Xbox…

…the rot set in even before the Xbox One 2013 reveal.

There was a time when GAF was favorable to Xbox. It was back in the 360 era, when Xbox was doing very well. Since then, not so much.

GAF is pretty rough on Xbox now, of course, and for the past two generations. Some of that is just a reflection of broader opinion, as others are saying. But some of it is self-selection. Members who like Xbox tend to leave or take distance, because the atmosphere is hostile to them, which leaves an increasingly anti-Xbox, pro-Sony crowd.

If I were a staunch Xbox fan, I would probably follow that same pattern. I would find it hard to be around here, because it would dampen my ability to enjoy gaming. I would probably seek out more Xbox-friendly spaces.

I'm a little curious about why we have Xbox gamers who stick around. Do they like the warz? Do they have a long history and ties here? Do they just have a thick skin? Do they not want to sequester themselves in an echo chamber, so they seek out contrary opinions? Are they masochists? I don't know.

I remember when Sony tried to make a console. I barely paid attention to it at the time because i didn't have any reason to believe Sony can make a game console. Sony proved all of us wrong.

Amazon just has to find the right people to run the division. And we have heard news on that recently... they hired one of the co-founders of Xbox.

Any kind of AI generated article. Takes out human philosophy and soul. And as we can see here, it's not even properly fact-checked.
I personally think that human philosophy and soul are completely lost in the mainstream media for quite some time .. but thats just my regular opinion .. since I dont fleepflop about what I think of them.

People cant complain that the main stream media is rotten and dead.. and complain an article was written by AI at the same time... if the data is correct I dont give a fuck about AI ... better than have some access media shill for the 100000 time spinning news.

I initially wrote them off as another Philip or Panasonic (3DO)

As a Sega Saturn owner I was initially resentful of their success, however the amount of Konami, Namco and Capcom games became so great I have in. Ended up loving it, they got every decision right.

Since 2000 the mass market has chosen PlayStation over Xbox.

The global public massively prefers PlayStation over Xbox, always has.

This isn’t a NeoGaf issue.
And Xbox has nobody to blame but themselves.

They let all their gamer people walk and replaced them with Microsoft people. J. Allard, Peter Moore, Shane Kim all left. Many others. They had a good understanding of what gamers wanted, how to secure system selling 3rd party exclusives and nourish their first party studios.

People like Mattrick, Phil, Booty, Greenberg just thought they could spend their way into people's mind and it never came close to working.

Worst of all, they had a team of internet losers, who would constantly fellate and pump out any corporate line instead of actually demanding more from Microsoft.

It really is a shame as I'd love to live in a world where we had 2005-2008 Xbox going up against 2009-2015 Sony, but we don't

I am frankly shocked that MS hasn't announced that they are phasing out Gamepass as we speak. You put Call of Duty on Xbox and all you have to fucking show for it is a 2% increase. That is a fucking disaster.

Amazon is a company with a legacy of failure propped up by Amazon/Amazon Prime. Only decent product is Kindle.

Amazon Prime Video... sucks
Amazon Prime Music... sucks
Amazon Firesticks... suck
Amazon Luna... sucks

They'll have no success bullying their way into gaming.

There isn't going to be Xbox console Gaming much longer. Just as we have people we are bitter about Sega Neptune never existing, the Xbox gamers would no longer have an ecosystem built for them. They can still identify as Xbox gamers, but it would be no different from being a NEO-GEO gamer. Look, console wars happen and consoles die. It had been a while since we saw a serious death but it had all happened before. Xbox will no longer get equal time in forums because they will cease to matter as much as they did before. That is the nature of the console war loss.

Microsoft were already a games developer and had a huge gaming platform (Windows 95) when they started the Xbox project.

Amazon are incredibly poorly suited right now, Luna anyone?

The only competitor I could see coming in would be Apple, they already have Mac as a platform, so an M series Apple TV box might work.

However it would be expensive, and they’d have to buy large publishers like EA or Ubisoft to get some exclusives.

We know that they failed with their 3rd party game studio because they mistakenly thought it would be easier. But you can never rule Amazon out because I would have ruled Sony out back in the day. And who knows, Mr J Allard is the Vice-directer of "Product" at Amazon right now. But what product exactly?

I could see Apple or Tencent. And I think Tencent would fail ultimately outside of China.

Apple could see an Apple TV with an M series Pro chip, but I don't think buying EA or Ubisoft would be helpful at the end of the day.

And getting 3rd party support for MacOS still isn't going very well. I was so surprised when Sony bought Nixxes that they didn't put any investment into getting their games on MacOS at all.

I think it's apples and oranges.

Money isn't enough to brute force your way into gaming. Microsoft proved that with Allard. The barrier to entry is even higher now than it was before.

Microsoft leaving does open the door for Nintendo to re-enter the home console market.

Of course they don’t want to split game development between two platforms, but a dedicated home box that runs all Switch 2 game at 2160p/60fps would go down well.

At no point am I suggesting money would be enough. Xbox proved that conclusively. But Sony is no deity and clearly make mistakes, Xbox just made worse mistakes. But if Amazon found someone who understands the industry, who knows what a good game looks like vs bad, who would give Killer Instinct a chance... it can be done. It would not be easy and money would not make it easier. But there is room for competition if Xbox just get on the corpse cart already.

I agree it opens the window, but it's a dangerous window. The problem is you have to make games that support the 4K60 box. And with Nvidia, that's going to be a pricey box.

Is Nintendo going to up the budget on the games they make and the development time? I think they'd have to. They run a high margin business, to trade those margins for the hopes of 3rd party royalties, doesn't seem worth it to me.

Thing is, that way you're going to create a bubble for the Xbox community, which is why we see some people being completely oblivious to reality.

NGage put up a bigger fight than these clowns. Except for Series S. That was an incredible design decision with forward thinking technology.

I'm a Nintendo gamer former Sega and Xbox gamer. I have fond memories of the Xbox and 360. I'm not into console warring but I'd quit gaming before owning a Sony console in my head cannon Sony killed Sega

Yes, that's the danger. I mentioned that some people might stick around because they don't want to be victim to an echo chamber. I was a member of an Xbox-only forum for a long time, and I saw an awful lot of groupthink, very few contrary voices. I'm sure the same is true for PS-only forums.

I do worry a little about GAF being too pro-Sony, too anti-MS. Sometimes I will push back against that a little. When I do that, I'm often misconstrued as an MS defender, and the knives come out. The only console I own is a PS5, though. I'm just trying to provide a little balance to what is often a very one-sided conversation.

Yeah, I know some people like that. They just despise Sony for whatever reason. I'm no fan of them myself, but I still own their console. I enjoyed the OG Xbox and 360, but I jumped ship after that.

Unless there is a miraculous surge in Game Pass subscriptions on PC, or Sony and Nintendo agree to allow some cut down form of Game Pass on their console similar to EA Play or Ubislop+, then Game Pass is facing a similar fate as Xbox hardware. The two are intrinsically linked as the majority of Game Pass subscriptions still come from console players. If hardware goes belly up, Game Pass will follow. Microsoft need to get comfortable with being a traditional third party publisher (albeit probably the biggest one) within the next decade.

The hate for Xbox on this site is insane.

Honestly, it's starting to make this place unreadable. If I wanted unhinged Xbox hate I'd go read that GAF splinter forum that has like 12 members.

GAF could go away completely and the news around Xbox consoles isn't going to change so how is it GAF's fault for discussing it? There is an ignore thread option, you know.

I was around when SEGA died. Don't worry, there will be new competition to take Xbox's place. Just as Xbox replaced SEGA.

I was around too, but the gaming landscape was also much different back then. In the late 80s and early 90s Sega and Nintendo were the main competitors, but there were a lot of companies trying to break into the console space. There were so many failed attempts, but there were also the rise of Playstation and eventually Xbox. Thing is there's no other companies trying to make their own console today. So hypothetically if Xbox announced they're just going to make third party games and dip out of making a new console, are there any other up and coming companies out there that would fill in Xbox's place?

100%

Most of the Xbox hate from Gaf is coming from a place of people being frustrated with Microsoft. You definitely have a handful of 30 and 40 year olds who are still trying to engage in console warring, but for the most part people here ultimately want to see Xbox make a comeback. We know what happens if Sony lost their direct competition.

Shenmue 2 was an Xbox exclusive in the US with may have contributed to Dreamcast owners going to Xbox.

This wasn’t the cause outside the US where Shenmue 2 released on Dreamcast.

It was definitely a part of it. Gamecube and Xbox got all the big Dreamcast games, but Nintendo deviated for the Wii, so everyone bought a 360.

Much of the animosity towards Sony has continued since then. It's turned into legitimate mental illness among press who were sega fanboys and then Microsoft fanboys and are getting deja vu.

At this rate if they ever make another Xbox console it'll probably do under 20M and will end up in Wii U/Vita territory. They sold over 3M last year but this year people will know everything is coming to playstation and pc now.

It's gonna be tough for the sales guy in the shops to present Xbox as an option to parents. So you can get an Xbox which has some great games or you can a playstation which has better games plus all the Xbox games. Only parents who hate their kids will buy an Xbox.
Physical presence of Xbox in shops in non existing in The Netherlands and maybe for a large part of Europe as well. There is no sales guy to even talk about this dead console.

They hit rock bottom because of many factors all self inflicted under Phil’s pitiful reign. Day one PC releases of AAA exclusives, Gamepass devaluing games and consoles, telling people they can play xbox games anywhere and don’t need an Xbox console. Those are just a few and again all self inflicted due to either ignorance or just desperation at this point. I would think many people this past holiday season got rid of their xboxes and bought a PS5 because of MS now putting their games on that console. No need to have an Xbox at all anymore for those people who maybe kept it for Halo and Gears. So yes, moronic leadership and stupid decisions made by them year after year have lead to the brand all but being dead.

Bullcrap. There is some legit amazing series on Amazon Prime.

The Boys...although its going down the shitter
Fallout
Reacher - easily my favorite series
Jack Ryan - a good not great series that occasionally flirts with being great.

Haven't owned an Xbox since the 360 but it will be rather boring with only one traditional home console product on the market.

Plus, it likely means the PS6 gen will last a really long time. No need for Sony to worry much about the next generation when no competition exists.

Eh they made some big mistakes, but it was all for investors not Xbox. MS stock has increased over the past five years with all the big purchases driving that growth.

Like I've said a billion times. ceos of massive businesses don't care about 40 years from now. They care about each year they can build that bonus. They won't be around in ten years. The trick has always been make big purchases to get investors TODAY even if it's bad long term.

In Ireland it still has a sizeable presence I'm guessing in line with the UK as we're identical markets really.

The Xbox section in shops like GAME, Smyths and CEX is very small compared to previous generations. If Xbox owners aren’t buying games because of Gamepass it makes sense.

The problem is those shelves of games act as adverts for the consoles themselves, something Microsoft obviously didn’t realise.

Lifetime sales maybe 15-20 million? And I am supposed to believe Xbox Series X/S generated 80b+ in its life time? Yeah nah. Even when considering both hardware + software revenue that shit doesn't add up.
