Marvel Rivals game director Thaddeus Sasser has said he believes PlayStation sci-fi shooter Concord failed because it didn't bring anything of "unique value" to its players.

Speaking on the VideoGamer podcast prior to Marvel Rivals' release, Sasser said he believed Concord didn't bring anything original to the table which would entice players to jump over from other popular shooters already on the market. "There's a switching cost," the director said. "I've already invested in Overwatch, I've got 15 skins for Pharah, I'm not going anywhere."

"As a game developer you're always worried until the audience has responded," the Marvel Rivals director continued, admitting he was cautious about releasing another free-to-play hero shooter into the wild.

Bring back Marvel Heroes (Omega). THAT was a game I could invest in and there's nothing out there like it (kind of a Diablo game). Not another Overwatch clone like Marvel Rivals.

The bar is soooo low these days, that people with flock to total crap.

Not him shitting bricks 2 days before the release fearing it might flop.

Not his game has Marvel characters and free to play, and Concord had ugly characters like its developers and it did cost money to buy that ugly game. Not even same type of game too.

A no body trying to act cool. got it.

"People are burned out on Overwatch clones. That's why Concord flopped."

Given that this mid-tier Overwatch clones is doing big numbers, I don't think that was it.

While this might be true, neither does a live service marvel game.
The Marvel skin on what is essentially OW is the unique value. Sounds weird but my kids and all their friends have been playing nonstop all week because it's familiar yet has all the cool Marvel characters.

Concord should have been free to play

Free to play would not save this garbage. This is a game created by weird devs made for themselves. The masses like cool looking heroes, awesome designs and roxy characters. Not this abobination that normalizes wacko trends.

Concord did bring something unique and unprecedented to the table. It marked the first time in history that a live service game got universally rejected and shut down in less than two weeks.

Yes how can you do hero shooters without nice looking characters is insane.

To be fair, Rivals doesn't bring anything unique either. It's Overwatch with Marvel characters. It also has a shockingly slow progression system, even for a F2P title.

So its unique in that it has the Marvel license and people get to play Marvel heroes?
That in and of itself is unique value.
This logic could be applied to literally anything, especially new IPs.

"New game offers new unique stories, or characters, or abilities, etc."

Doesn't mean good or bad, but still fits into "unique".

This is the unique value concord lacked:

1x.webp
"We are about to go into battle with unknown forces. They may shoot at us, spit acid, throw fire, call down lightning, blast us with eye lasers, summon swarms of bugs, grow spikes, hurl objects with their minds, or turn the very air into razor sharp shards of ice; dress accordingly!"

"I'm gonna wear booty shorts, thigh high stockings, and a mini-jacket that shows off my sick abs!"

"Yes, Snow, thats why we keep you around, for team morale." :P

Concord was just a poorly handled project for a lot of reasons. Nothing new to the table, $40, uninteresting characters, weapons, etc.

Marvel Rivals automatically interests people more with its characters because its characters people know from comics, movies, cartoons, etc. Sure, the gameplay itself may not be wholly unique, but what it makes up is just dumb fun that's free to play. It also helps that it's a Marvel game that hasn't existed before.

And morale is very important

Concord did have some unique systems to combat that for some (many?) was a negative that initially made the game feel slow until you started to build out your character.

Beyond that it's not hard to figure out. Free to play is a necessity. Flashy art style with pleasing character skins is a huge sell. Beloved IP characters is the cherry on top. That's it. The game director has right to flex but he's doing it for the wrong reason.

I know that Concord had plenty of flaws, whether it was in its "hero shooter" concept or its terrible DA.

But claim you know why Concord flopped when you launch a game with Marvel IP where all Marvel fanboy go to the game, with gameplay from "TPS Overwatch" concept and then, claim Concord isn't a "unique value". Excuse me but I think you should STFU.

We gonna talk later.. Marvel Rivals is the next MultiVersus.

Annnnnnd Rivals is only coasting off of brand recognition and not unique, innovative or original gameplay so swings and roundabouts really. Strip away the Marvel aesthetic and its just more slop.

Nobody wanted to play as those characters or buy shitty looking skins for concord. I feel like it's pretty simple.
Pretty much this. I actually didn't hate the gameplay for it. It wasn't a must play and ultra addicting, but I put about 8 hours into the beta and had a solid time with it.

Just the God damn characters. They were AWFUL. I typically don't give a shit about character looks or anything like that. Hell, if a game has a create a character, I usually leave as default, that's how little I care. But in Concord.... That games design was so bad it made me hate it. I feel like chatgpt can spit up more interesting designs in 5 seconds.

The thing is, from what I hear, Concord is not a bad game for the type of game it is. The issue is, no one wants any more stupid hero shooters. Quit making them.

Unique "value"

Concord had unique characters, but nothing of value.
Like it or not even if this was a literal reskin of OW but with Marvel characters and powers that are reminiscent of the comic counterparts that would be unique value.

I literally forgot all the characters names from Concord already, but tell me Magneto, Wolverine etc etc.....and you got my attention.

Concord should have been free to play

Nobody cared enough to play the free beta either. That was the point they should've delayed it and either retooled it as a free to play game or pulled the plug. It would've been another Hyenas or something that people barely remember. Could've avoided the massive embarrassment that Concord turned out to be.

Were that true, people would drop it ASAP.
Alot of Marvel IP games have flopped, so its not like Marvel IP is a golden ticket.

Yes, the Marvel IP got people through the door, the game kept people in the bar.

Concord did bring something unique though: extremely ugly characters. It didn't resonate too well with gamers though.

Dude should thank that is working on a marvel licensed game or nobody would probably give a shit about his game aswell.

This is funny coming from a game that pretty much replicates what Overwatch did.

The difference is marvel heroes. And that's it.

Still, game is fun, not gonna deny that. But progression and rewarding is horrible at the moment.

Ones f2p the other was 40 bucks
Ones got the biggest heroes as playable characters the others got barely human characters its obvious why rivals is doing so well

ive already almost completed the BP, so its not that difficult (did not pay)

If you think its exactly like OW you haven't played enough or have a very poor understanding of its mechanics

The comments here make no sense, the marvel property is the unique value, he literally says so himself and y'all would know this if you actually read the article.
