The reception of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in Japan, based on Amazon Japan sales and reviews, is brutal

Right now, the game’s ranking at 98 and getting dunked on by AA titles like Split Fiction and Atelier Yumia and rocking a solid 2 out of 5 stars.

But if you wanna see real brutality, check out the reviews… I thought Japanese people were polite :messenger_grimmacing_

To be honest, from what I played so far, Ubisoft has done a great job representing the Japanese culture. Yes, Yasuke might be out of place but the rest of the game has been great. I think those people giving bad reviews probably havent touched the game and are repeating the same silly arguments they hear on the internet

Why should Japan be exempt from having its history rewritten or changed same as the rest of us?
It’s a video game. It’s about as dumb as getting upset at the movie The Last Samurai. Very few people gave a shit about history being rewritten when it came to other Samurai games, despite them taking far more liberties with history. Because they are all fiction.

How many early bad reviews are actually of the game as opposed to pre-release controversy? This is far more evident if you go somewhere like Germany’s page. Good reviews are just people enjoying the game, bad reviews are all nerdy Internet dwellers. It's going to be stronger in Japan, of course.

I will be more interested to see what reviews are like in a few months when the (few?) people that bought the game actually play it and leave reviews of the product rather than what they got from the Internet. I'm curious to know what the general Japanese audience thinks of it.

It may be past saving, and it's never going to be a 5* game for the well publicised reasons, but I don't think early reviews are something to be excited about. There's always a distortion to them - good or bad.

See no mention of a "shrine" they go straight to complaining about the Black protagonist but mainstream outlets are only talking about one thing trying to cloak their disdain for the main character.

Japanese people accepting Chinese tourists in droves who actually for a good fraction of them dislike Japan culture and behave badly in the country.Economy gone to shit, price of rice almost doubled in a year , younger generation lost, your population is literally dying but yeah let's get upset about a fucking videogame.

THis is pathetic. Also as much as Ubisoft sucks japanese devs are no better, maybe put out some good fucking games on the market before yapping.

Japan has made many games that pissed on other cultures. Zero outrage.

Ubisoft makes a fantasy game set in Japan and its "blasphemy of Japanese culture"

Lol

Why did these people even buy the game lmao. Everything they're complaining about has been public knowledge for ages. There's absolutely zero chance they didn't know about this beforehand.

Edit: Since the edition is posted next to each review, I assumed that you actually had to buy the game in order to write one. Seems like that isn't even the case, so it's probably just plain old review bombing.

Come on now.
  1. No one seems mad about the shrines - which, I thought was the biggest disrespect?
  2. Why would you listen to anyone who "buys" a game with a black guy on the cover only to complain about a black guy in the game?
  3. It may cause "nausea, vomiting, fainting"?
  4. Anyone can review anything on Amazon. You don't even need a pulse. Which is why you have someone aghast at the player character in an Assassin's Creed game set in Japan killing Japanese NPCs.
I think Ubisoft can safely ignore these comments.

If anyone here actually cares about this, go to the listing and filter reviews by "verified purchase". There's only 3 at the time of this comment. One 4 star review, and two 5 star reviews.

Difference being that Ubisoft and their marketing gaslights everyone that goes against their game with their viewpoint. And doubled down on their 'research' as historically accurate, for months even after criticisms. They pretty much asked for this.

Ubisoft could've avoided all this drama and not crash a sinking ship but they went forward anyways. Nobody asked for this.. And after blunders like SW Outlaws. A lot of AC players and casuals have been wanting an AC set in Japan for years. Instead we get more virtue signalling and gaslighting from corpo's that seemly don't care if the company burns.

There's no winner here: Ubisoft trying to gaslight everyone who criticizes their marketing as being a shit person vs. Japan being whine little bitches about this, while also depicting other cultures in "disrespectful" ways in their media as well.

Japan and Ubisoft both deserve each other in this case.

They are hypocritical assholes.
This is one of more respectful games set in Japan made by westerners.
There is even a message reminding not to climb tori gates because of respect and other stuff like that. It portrays Japan beautifully like almost o other game.

Where are their issues with rise of ronin? Oh wait. It’s made by Japanese dev… so it’s fine… right.

Where the hell did you get that 7 million figure from?

I hope your not just using the figure from the Sony leaks about Spider-Man 2 and just applying it to all other big budget games now...
Well, work on AC: Shadows started sometime around October of 2018. (So around 6+ years of dev time).

The main studio working on AC: Shadows is Ubisoft Quebec, which has roughly around 600 employees. But as many as 17 different studios actually worked on the game. With an average salary $75k (being conservative here), salary alone for just this one studio would be $270M.

Experts estimate the development cost to be around $250M - $350M.

Ubisoft doesn't make $80 per copy sold, as Microsoft, Sony, Steam take 30% of the revenue when sold on their platform. At $56 per copy sold, it would take 6 million copies sold to make around $336M. Which still isn't break even if the upper limit of $350M of dev costs is to be believed.

When you add in marketing costs, other expenses and the salary of other studios for the time that they spent helping develop AC: Shadows, the actual costs are probably much much higher. It wouldn't surprise me if the break even point is actually around 10M copies sold.

Samurai were the same as police officers in old Japan.
(In the Sengoku period*, they had a military status.)
Therefore, they would not indiscriminately draw their swords on civilians.
(For example, drawing a sword inside a castle or in town was grounds for punishment.)
I think it probably feels strange to Japanese people that a black samurai could kill as many civilians (Japanese) as he wanted.

*1467 to 1615, is a period of civil war in Japanese history.

People in most parts of the world don't indiscriminately drive up to other cars, get out, pull the other driver out, beat the shit out of them, and run over them as they drive away with the other person's wife still in the car. That would be a strange thing for anyone to witness, but we're all excited for GTA 6.

I still doubt it‘ll sell enough to be a financial success. They need to sell around 7 million (while its full price) to break even, so far they‘ve sold 2 million.
Odyssey and Valhalla were both financial successes, and fans of the series are loving Shadows. My guess is this game will do just fine.

The same people saying it's not a big deal that Yasuke can go around killing Japanese citizens are the same people who had a problem with Resident Evil 5, a white character killing African Zombies.

It's so transparent that nobody has any actual moral stance on these things, it's just virtue signaling, taking up the point that will own the other side.

I'm sick of seeing this social experiment by Ubisoft. This manufactured controversy is the only reason anyone even really gave a shit about this game and people are just boosting its presence by engaging with it (even if negatively). Another thread for the ignore list.

They don't represent Japan culture , they are insulting them
1- portraying a black guy as a samurai
2- allow you to destruct temples
3- making Japanese people of that era gay lesbian and none binary
4-making one of the most influenced woman in Japan who had been loyal to her husband a cheater and with who ! Yasuke
Last the game looks more Chinese than japanese
You aren't going to know better than japanese themselves about their culture and history

Killing innocent people in Assassins Creed games will lead to a game over screen.
Shadows is Naoes story, Yasuke is basically a side character, dont play him if you dont want a black man to be killing asian people.

I take it you havent actually played any of the Assassins Creed games, and most certainly havent played this game so maybe just put the topic on ignore and dont spout your ignorance here.

What makes you think I haven't played any Assassin's Creed games?

Seems like an easy way to just dismiss what I'm saying without actually engaging with the points I'm bringing up.

I laugh at the mess Ubi got itself in, but I also really don’t care if someone is offended by a game. In fact, I hope this game succeeds because it sounds like Ubi has been in trouble and I want to get back to the old days where we all collectively told the Jack Thompsons of the world to F off.
