Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon Review Thread

Or maybe people should question why their opinion is always the outlier.

Or maybe people should read the actual content of a review to determine if it is relevant to them (if you like hard games, and a person reviewing the game clearly hates them, take their review with a grain of salt, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to review games) rather than just focusing on numbers.

yea, just shut up guys. no need to question anything ever.

Because that's exactly what I said. If we want to question something, how about the fact that most of the complaining correlates to people with Luigi hat avatars? Oh but you guys are allowed to have bias, my bad. Continue trying to discredit review scores for a game that most of you haven't even played.

She criticized the game for being too difficult when literally nobody else has, including GAF members. Pardon me for questioning the validity of her assessment.

why would you go into a Luigi's Mansion board and question why someone would be interested in Luigi's Mansion

Did any review mention the game's length yet? A game's length is kinda the deciding factor for a game for me. As long as the game isn't like 6hrs long or something, its good with me. I just want a game that's 8hrs+ that'll have me playing for a while.

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw in the OP and one of the reviews mentioned its 14hrs long. That's really good :) Way longer then expected.

Then she found it too difficult! She is weak sauce. They are allowed to play and have opinions on games too. That review would not be relevant to you, because you don't mind hard games, or don't care about frequent checkpoints, or love Dark Souls or whatever, but maybe someone else with her level of video game skills might find it useful. That doesn't mean she is lying or has some sort of ulterior motive.

Did I?

I don't imagine that there's a "let's fuck Nintendo" directive enacted over at Gamespot, but it should be common knowledge that you can generally count on them to hand out one of the lower (if not the lowest) ratings for Nintendo games.

i honestly have no clue what you were trying to say, but bringing avatars into the conversation is incredibly arrogant. imagine if i said the following:

oh what a coincidence, the guys defending the low review scores has no Luigi's Hat. something fishy here.

i think i'd sound like an idiot

and Trine 2 on the Wii U a 6.5 despite being exactly the same game the site gave an 8.5

She didn't do both reviews. Normally I do think it's bullshit if a site or reviewer gives a lower score to a game simply for coming out later (though value should be taken into account I guess) but in this case they are two completely different opinions.

I thought the Gamespot reviewer looked familiar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwNV5eQFi84

Carolyn Petit: "This is Choplifter HD. I've been talking about it in the office; the best we could figure out as to what 'HD' stands for is 'Helicopter Dudes.' Choplifter: Helicopter Dudes; but don't quote me on that cuz it's not official." "It's not high definition?" "Oooh, is that a thing?"

Also if the puzzles were too hard in this game, I'd love to watch her play Sticker Star for the first time to see her rage at some of those puzzles which can only fit into the "no idea how you are supposed to know this the first time you play the game" category.

Don't mean to derail anything, but I've been playing Sticker Star recently and tbh the puzzles aren't that tricky to figure out without looking it up. The only times I've had trouble are for things that were plainly obvious and me just thinking too hard about what the answer to the puzzle is.

I haven't finished the game yet but I'm at like world 4 so unless the puzzles become substantially more difficult in like world 5 and 6, the hyperbole that surrounds SS' puzzle difficulty is ridiculous lol.

Back to Luigi's Mansion though!

I haven't watched/read that Gamespot review, but... seriously? She docked points because there wasn't a handholding checkpoint system? =\

And the fact that the puzzles actually *gasp* take some thought? God forbid you actually have to look around.

10-14 hours is what I've read. Plus the multiplayer, yo.

Edit: That took me forever to reply.

Actually: "One key combat sequence is a frustrating challenge, not a rewarding one."

i know. and i think that's equally bullshit. was there honestly no one on staff whose opinion matched up with the original? it just creates confusion and shows a lack of consistency. if the site typically offered up second opinions, fine, but i'd love to know how they thought that was ok in that context.

Pretty sure they weren't being serious.

Who cares if Gamespot gave a lower than average review? Are you concerned about the Metacritic score of a game you haven't played yet? Do you own Nintendo stock or something? This is coming from a die-hard Nintendo fan BTW.

Her main (and only?) complaints are fighting numerous ghosts at once, and having to restart the whole mission after dying. Which could be frustrating, especially for a puzzle heavy game. Nothing really about the puzzles.

Oh and i remember reading somewhere that there is a revival item in every mission, which she didn't note in the review.

it's a review discussion thread. what do you want people to talk about other than reviews? people would obviously comment on the outliers, it always happens...

Honestly, I'm typically more receptive towards Gamespot's reviews as of late--they're tough, but I also find them to be fair. But reading this review, and comparing it to what other sites have written, it seems like Gamespot has kinda missed the mark (sorta like w/ ZombiU).

Fair enough, that makes sense. I've just always been frustrated by that sort of thing. I guess it's to be expected in a review thread!

I didn't make a judgement, I just remembered that stupid moment/awful joke.

I think there is a bad trend in the industry towards games that are braindead easy, like the latest Tomb Raider. On the flipside, games should be challenging, not frustrating. We'll just have to see just how difficult this 12-room enemy onslaught really is and if checkpoints would have made sense. It seems like the whole point of making the game level-based was to make each level short enough to play in a quick sitting.

a few pages back someone touched on the idea that reviewers have limited amount of time to review games, which can hurt their review. I think we definitely saw it recently with ZombiU, which is meant to be played slow and deliberately, but I imagine it's especially true of handheld games such as this one, which are designed for shorter play times. Just one of the many problems with game journalism, though this one isn't exactly their fault.

and though I sometimes wished that it would leave me alone to explore more at my own pace,

This concerns me a bit. I was looking forward to the game because I thought it was going to turn me loose in a big haunted house to explore and solve puzzles in. I haven't played the original but that's the vibe I got from it. If it's a more hand-holdy game I'm not sure how much I like that.

the game journalism field should be questioned at every turn imo :p i'm not the one to do it but if others are passionate enough, power to them

yea, that was my favorite part of the original as well. one big large mansion full of possibilities.

Damn lol. Sounds like she sucked at the game and that frustration poured into the review.

It certainly sounds like it. And there are lives (one per level) in the form of Gold Dog Bones, but you need to find them. That she doesn't mention them either dishonest or evidence that she didn't find any.

The first mansion (especially the first few missions) are understandably hand-holdy with a call from E. Gadd every other room or so, but the second mansion has been much less so and I've been free to move about more or less as I like.

Are you for real?

Obviously it's a joke. The very sentence after the part you so carefully forgot to transcribe is "No, but in all seriousness..."

Generally positive reviews. Should be a fun day when the game comes out, and like Kid Icarus, I probably will have a new pooping game, which is always great.

If you score below the metacritic average, wouldn't that be the natural assumption.

Now consider the opposite, you score above the metacritic average, wouldn't you equally expect that reviewer to say "The metacritic score is lower than I expect."

It definitely is a pooping game. Just check the GameSpot review score. ;-)

Posting this here from the Iwata Asks:

Bryce: For Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, we'd been told to always keep beginners in mind as we made it. In the end, I think it turned out so both skilled gamers—of course—and beginners can enjoy it.

It's even more funny. I understand that she has a deadline and she may not be great the game, but damn it's just funny.

Well, in my case the natural assumption would be humility, but I guess, as Jim Sterling once said, to have the gall to be a professional game reviewer it demands a certain amount of arrogance. :p

This person then is in no way better than the fanboi who gets mad and calls GameSpot shit for their low review compared to the other publications. Actually, it's even worse since she's supposed to be a "professional".
